For myself, the approach doesn’t have to be limited and if a track fits the vibe even if it has different elements from other genres it can add a beautiful vibe to the storyline of a project.

The original A Tribe Called Quest classic “Midnight Marauders” from 1993 features 15 of the most well respected and well known tunes of the golden era of hip hop. This album is a true classic in the very essence of the word.

In the wake of the untimely death of the groups’ charismatic rapper Phife Dawg, Ninetofive Records’ founder and anchor Linus Maximilian Jonsson along with danish beatmaker Kongchain, decided to pay dues by collecting and curating a batch of beats from Europe's most creative beat heads.

The concept was simple: flip the samples that A Tribe Called Quest used on the original album - and do it creatively for a fresh take on a classic.

What we didn’t expect though, were the difficult challenges, even for these well-seasoned sample heads that were invited for the project. The filtering of the samples on the original songs had even our most technical minded beat conductors scratching their heads. They were actually extremely difficult to emulate, even with today's vast array of digital music production equipment.

Nonetheless, the results we are now presenting, are a crisp, contemporary take on sample flipping with swinging rhythmic patterns, dirty filtering and an array of layering to give the beats a broad sonic landscape and a serious head nod factor.

We hope you will enjoy our interpretation of this hip hop classic. Of course it doesn’t compare, but it will definitely give an interesting and fresh take on it, which will hopefully turn heads and maybe even get bumped in the jeeps of Linden Boulevard.

Honestly i've been a Grap Luva fan since my teenage years. Ever since Pete Rock introduced the world to INI via 'Fakin Jax' i've been devouring every beats & rhyme the younger soul brother has provided. I never imagined that 20 years later i'd have the opportunity to work with him and be a part of his musical history. I'm still soaking it in. Honestly, I can't say much more about this track other than LISTEN!

I'm really excited today, two of the earliest members on the movement just released a collaborative single that's available on all platforms. Both of them are working really hard at the moment to push their own catalog, so i'm just stunned how they managed to pull this off. I got really surprised when Mecca:83 hit me up and explained that they were finished, and finally it's here! 

By now, you should be familiar with their style when they produce, Monma got that classic bounce & warm vibe and Mecca:83 is always onto some next level stuff blending references from both Hip-Hop and Jazz but still manages to make the beats sound very up to date.  Last time, when we had the opportunity to hear them work together was during 2017 under the 'Life Sketches Volume. 03' project that was released under the catalog and it's starting to become a classic for me personally i'd say.  

Here's what Mecca:83 had to say about the collaboration:I’ve been a fan on the man since he was going by the name MNSTRMKK on Soundcloud - his sound has been full of soul since day one. I originally reached out him for a track back when we were doing the Expansions Collective single series in 2015  (we released a track by him called “Wutai Bounce”).  We’ve been trading ideas, loops and sketches ever since, but we never quite finished anything...which is a common theme for me if I’m honest!  With that in mind, I’m hyped to share this one with you guys. Who knows, if you like it we might finish some more joints! Much love.
