Nest HQ Premieres (2018)

Within a musical generation defined by duplicability and run by colorless artistry, the redeeming qualities of musicians have boiled down to attitude, intent, and artistic self-confidence. Chuurch embody these characteristics without exaggeration; there is foresight in the actions they take, and tenacity in the music they produce. Patient and calculated, Chuurch have been preparing for siege, and Uunion is the pointing of the first arrow.

As artists, their approach has been one of refinement, taking years of time to reflect on who they are and what they want to become. Unlike so many artists, who find their sound along the way, Chuurch took the time ahead of launching their project to create something immediately-recognizable. What’s left is a sound that can be picked out from between thousands and thousands of artists within the first couple of seconds. Hate it or love it, Chuurch is Chuurch.

Uunion is a melting pot of influence, drawing equally from past and present. Their drum work and vocal sampling is evocative of the MPC2000 days, driving over basslines that feel like they should have been sequenced in a late '90s basement. Tonally and compositionally, their choices are bold and eclectic, much in the vein of Boys Noize, Mr. Oizo, and even some of the darker sides of Justice. Still, the music is refreshing and relevant; I think it goes to show that when you reach a point where you're making music that only you can make, everything else becomes irrelevant.

Historically, we were never sure if releasing two projects from the same artist was something we'd ever do at NEST, but after hearing the art that Julien Mier had to offer, the decision was easy. The experimental, studio swiss-army knife producer delivered us a mischievous and whimsical EP that lives inside a thin, glass orbuculum. Peering through the glass window, a tiny world exists full of characters, oceans, and mythical creatures.

The A-side "Jasmine Oceans" is subtle, smart, and delicate, almost as if it could be broken by the slightest tap. It shifts tenderly between a multitude of keys, displaying Julien's absolute mastery of music theory and creating the intensely colored universe that the EP lives in. The B-side "Stirring Child Spirits" is a guided tour through that universe, and Julien's propensity for color, texture, and storytelling outlines each detail. The single is also backed by an equally clever animated video by Russian animator Sasha Martin. His sketchbook approach to animation and charmingly gloomy character design reflect 1-to-1 the textures and colors found in Julien's music, and ground us in the same warm mischief of the EP.

Julien Mier - Stirring Child Spirits [NEST082] + Video

Dutch producer Jos Lok caught my ear during a routine weekly search through SoundCloud. To be honest, the search has been next to useless in that desolate wasteland of copycat producers, but for some reason, I felt hopeful that day. I was deep in a mix by some random producer who will likely never be found again, and had to stop when I heard a bubbly, thriving  dance record named "Pollies." I did a straight nosedive and after some time came across the profile I was looking for.

Jos Lok's style is fluid like water, but powerful like the ocean. Light and syncopated drum works line the outside of the records, and the meat and bones are driving low-ends that you could listen to for hours on repeat. The A-side, "Pollies," is incredibly fresh. The tones are uplifting and lively, but still somehow fitting in a warehouse set. The B-side, "Renband," is a full-on Dutch techno slapper, and man, will I be rinsing this one out over the summer.

I'm super happy to be able to release these records today. Listen, enjoy, and add these to your summer set lists.

Title track ‘I Am The Whisper’ finds Bad Guy Ri Ri in a darker, deeper mode than previous releases, with vaguely sinister spoken word vocals from London-based singer/songwriter Molly Beanland peppering a propulsive beat and acid stabs. “I’m warning you, once we start we’ll never stop,” she threatens. B-side ‘Dance With Moi’ punches hard from the get go, expertly melding techno, electro and house influences in true Riton style.

Following a string of high profile remixes, a debut EP & collaborations with the Point Point crew, and pioneering a new promotional platform and soon-to-be-label, bitbird, Dutch beatsmith San Holo connects with NEST for the release of his latest single “We Rise” this Monday, February 23rd.

There’s an intrinsic positivity found in “We Rise” (and all of San Holo’s stylings) that evokes an instant pleasure state in the listener. Irresistible leads meet with emotive chords before crashing into savage Hip Hop percussion, illuminating the light & bright side of the ever-evolving Future Beats designation. The repeating vocal, “We rise, we fall,” adds to the single’s powerful energy, augmenting the overall depth of the track for a lasting effect that lingers long after the song comes to an end.

A new wave of producers and DJs are about to take over the world in the near future and the Bangladesh-born, NYC-raised Sajeeb Saha, better known as Jai Wolf, is soon to be one of them. 

Over the last few years the 23 year old artist has established himself as an act who can cover everything from mainstage hype to naptime turn down, and his catchy melodies and forward-driven productions can be heard through official releases on OWSLA, Atlantic, Def Jam and Kitsune, as well as the recent Moving Castle Vol. 4 compilation.

I remember the exact moment when I first heard @BigWild's music. I was sitting in my room, trading music with Chad (from Lazerdisk). "You have to check out this tune 'Venice Venture'," he vehemently insisted, "it's sooo good." The song was paired with a video comprised entirely of surf footage, setting the vibe with westside Los Angeles overtones and island-though-not-tropical influence. "The guitar riff in the song was actually recorded by his dad." If the music wasn't good enough, the fact that this song was a familial collaboration bolstered my confidence in Big Wild's then-budding career.

I was locked in from that point on. I waited like a kid by the mailbox for the comic book toy I had mailed away for, only that toy was new, truly inspired music from a musician with more potential than most in his class. Since then, he's toured with Odesza and GRiZ, joined Windish Agency and Red Light management, remixed the likes of Hundred Waters and Champagne Drip, and released on Odesza's Foreign Family Collective label. Needless to say, I had a lot of questions about his time on tour, at home, and how his music sounds so good.

Chances are you've either heard or used a preset from Germany's Valentin Brunn, better known as @Virtual-Riot. His ability to flawlessly emulate some of the most technical synthesis in the game while also contributing plenty of his own new techniques stems from a pure love of the craft. His eyes light up when he's talking about learning a new sound or digging into the backend of a synth.

PhaseOne is ready for a big year. After beginning 2017 with an exclusive signing to the Disciple Recordings family (home to  Virtual Riot, Barely Alive, Dubloadz, and more), the Australian producer offered up his self-described "best work to date" in Origins, which showed off PhaseOne's strengths in metal-infused dubstep and adept sound design through four original productions.

Now, on the back of the well-received EP release, PhaseOne is taking to the road for the next three months, notching five dates in Europe in March before kicking off his 18+ date US tour in the first week of April. Ahead of the trip, we caught up with him about signing to Disciple and an impending move to LA, the parallels between dubstep and metal, and plans for the rest of the year.

You may know @hex-cougar from the wide array of future-driven sounds he's brought to labels like Shifty Rhythms and Daruma. The LA-based artist and classically trained pianist has brought to the SoundCloud community a veritable breath of fresh electro-tinged air. Remixes for artists like Sia and Louis The Child as well as features on tracks with graves, ROSE⌘GOLD, and Tides all have that electrifying monsoon-of-sound signature. My favorite release is his remix of Gesaffelstein's "Hellifornia." In fact, it's so good that I initially thought Gesa did a VIP of his own track before I saw it was a Hex remix. Needless to say I was hooked from that point on.

His sound goes beyond the generic "future bass" style. Even though it certainly vacations in that world, there is a massive difference between what most future bass newcomers do and what Hex creates. His rhythms are tighter and more dynamic than most, melodies align like ducks trotting to a pond. His sound design lives in both the colloquial and adventurous. It's the kind of music you'd want to hear live at a Brownies & Lemonade show, DoLab stage, or soundtracking one of those insane GoPro videos from those adrenaline junky lunatics.

Today, Chuurch offer us "One Mind" the first single off of Uunion. Boom-bap drums meddle between axing bass lines as almost inconsonant, creasing synths make quick and fluid appearances throughout. The entire record is ominously slow and moves with the impending energy of an army marching in the distance.

Within a musical generation defined by duplicability and run by colorless artistry, the redeeming qualities of musicians have boiled down to attitude, intent, and artistic self-confidence. Chuurch embody these characteristics without exaggeration; there is foresight in the actions they take, and tenacity in the music they produce. Patient and calculated, Chuurch have been preparing for siege, and Uunion is the pointing of the first arrow.

The second single off the EP, "Erase The Pain" featuring Blak Trash, is forward-thinking, divisive, and most importantly, Chuurch as hell. Their voice as musicians is clear and concise, void of distraction or bait, and their West Coast Golden-Era meets acid house world absolutely blisters through in "Erase The Pain," planting you holistically within the world they are creating. If "One Mind" was an army approaching, "Erase The Pain" is the first battle cry.

One of the game's best new names, Australian producer ZEKE BEATS blends hip-hop and grime influences with his signature analogue basslines for a distinct sound that's dirty, crunchy and always futuristic. He broke through with the Meltdown EP on Terrorrhythm in 2016 (which premiered on NHQ), and since then, he's shared music across many top-respected labels like Deadbeats, Mad Decent and Buygore, where he released his recent Devastate EP. This year, he's been keeping the bass revolution kicking and gearing up for a hectic tour schedule which brings him out to California for Lightning in a Bottle 2018, for which he's prepared this mix.

This week we have an absolutely epic, brain-melting dubstep MiniMix coming your way courtesy of master sound designer Kompany. The producer, Icon Collective alum turned touring DJ, has a grip of unreleased material thrown into this mix as well as some visceral new classics dominating the bass space. All Night feat. Mattie Safer (Chuurch Remix) [NEST HQ Premiere]

Historically, we were never sure if releasing two projects from the same artist was something we'd ever do at NEST, but after hearing the art that Julien Mier had to offer, the decision was easy. The experimental, studio swiss-army knife producer delivered us a mischievous and whimsical EP that lives inside a thin, glass orbuculum. Peering through the glass window, a tiny world exists full of characters, oceans, and mythical creatures.

The A-side "Jasmine Oceans" is subtle, smart, and delicate, almost as if it could be broken by the slightest tap. It shifts tenderly between a multitude of keys, displaying Julien's absolute mastery of music theory and creating the intensely colored universe that the EP lives in. The B-side "Stirring Child Spirits" is a guided tour through that universe, and Julien's propensity for color, texture, and storytelling outlines each detail. The single is also backed by an equally clever animated video by Russian animator Sasha Martin. His sketchbook approach to animation and charmingly gloomy character design reflect 1-to-1 the textures and colors found in Julien's music, and ground us in the same warm mischief of the EP.

UK-born, now US-based DJ and producer Kyle Cook aka Glacci has a well-defined aesthetic that sounds like the euphoric vibrations found inside a glistening, cerulean blue crystal shard, reminiscent of Rustie in his prime. He’s able to bring together club frameworks, rave influences, and pure emotion with ease, and demonstrates a deep-seated insight about composition, matched with a remarkable sense of integrity to his influences.
