We’re thrilled to share the fantastic mix that he’s brought to the podcast series today, which includes tracks from the likes of Space Ghost, Duke Hugh and Omar S. Nick V. - The Positive Force Show #17

Manchester born Nick V was living in the Northern England city in his formative years during the rise and subsequent explosion of Acid House music in the UK...

... a period of his life which laid the foundations for what has now become a fruitful career across the past three decades in electronic music. 

1987 saw Nick relocate to Paris with an in-depth knowledge of the House music sound that was soon set to resonate across the globe. This fundamental education in electronic music allowed him to share his experiences of House music in his new home, carrying the torch for an emotional connection through dance music and contributing towards the then blossoming scene in Paris with his own ideas, events and DJ sets. 

Since his arrival in France back at the tail end of the 80’s Nick has become an integral part of the Parisian scene, holding many residencies over the years at some of the cities most respected clubs and showcasing his broad spectrum of styles, as a DJ, record collector and crate digger. Nick’s sound traverses through Disco, Deep Techno, Broken Beat, Boogie and Dance Floor Jazz whilst keeping House music at the core of everything he does. His Mona events, which he describes as a ‘’dance culture party’’ and has been running since 2008, exploring the relationship between dance and electronic music and often welcomes a wide array of guests. Offering free dance classes at the beginning of the party it often sees dance enthusiasts sharing the floor with house music heads and the event has long celebrated the LGBTQ scene, catering for the Parisian community and encouraging alternative dances such as voguing, waacking and many more which were birthed out of the early disco and house scene in the US.

As well as introducing a more unique experience of dance back to dance floors with Mona, Nick has long been a sound enthusiast and audiophile, working for many years as an architectural acoustics consultant which has undoubtedly played into his desire for the high quality sound you can experience at Mona. Amongst this he’s also heading up the affiliated Mona Musique, a vinyl only imprint which stands as a platform for him to release the authentic house sounds he’s become known for from the likes of Hugo LX and Lea Lisa. 2019’s « House Of Riviera » saw him dig back through his collection of rare Italo House gems released between 1991-1993 and bring them together into a fresh vinyl compilation of unsung classics to be re-discovered. With such an impressive history in House it’s no wonder Nick V has become a highly respected name in contemporary electronic music, with many more exciting projects in the pipeline and a passionate dedication to his work he’ll no doubt remain so for many years to come.

I've not updated my profile over here for 3 years so here we go  ! Also my personal turntables have been broken for over two years so I can only record live in clubs where I play. You'll hear the needle skipping, rewinds, the crowd screaming, myself bigging up on the mic, and no editing, this is a live recording.

This was done at Mona my residency in Paris at La Java in October 2013. That night I invited DJ Steaw and Garrett David to play with me. We started quite early, at 10 pm, as we had a Vogue and Waack ball on at the start of the night and played through until 6 am. This particular one hour set was recorded between 4 and 5 am. I was feeling a little tired by that time, as I had only just become a father three days before.

Following up on the success of House Of Riviera released in 2019, Mona Musique releases House Of Riviera Volume 2 curated by label head @NickV, a compilation that pays homage to forgotten gems of the classic Italian House scene, circa 1991-1994. 9 tracks from the artists and record labels that were central to this seminal era of House music, including two never released cuts from Ricky Montanari, Davide Ruberto and Ivan Iacobucci.

House Of Riviera Vol. 2 unites a selection of tracks that encapsulates the atmosphere, the energy and creativity that reigned during that era. Starting where the first compilation left us, with, once again, Alex Neri and Marco Baroni opening the opus, this time as Green Baize and the wonderfully deep and harmonious « Switch Back » released in 1992 on Oversky Records. Night Communication take things closer to peak time with « Let’s Face The Music » released in 1994 on Hearbeat. Ivan Iacobucci brings two tracks to the project with the disco tinged « Get Up », released as Mental Detector on his very own label Hole in 1993, and the previously unreleased « Melt The Sun » extracted from a DAT tape from 30 years ago. The very deep and sensual « Load In Total Darkness » by More Heavy Soul, released on Irma sublabel Calypso in 1992, with vocal samples and beats lifted from Disco classics, is clearly a nod to the New York underground house scene. The second record opens with the Ricky Montanari Ethos Mama remix of Sima « Give You Myself » on D :Vision released in 1992. Ricky contributes a second track to the compilation, the original version of London made in 1993. Originally commissioned by Freetown Records as a track to feature the vocals of Arnold Javis, the project was unretained and almost scrapped, until Ricky decided to preserve a rough version on DAT tape before leaving the studio in the early hours of the morning. Workin’ Happily bring some late night dub energy with the percussive vocal snippets and grooving synth stabs of « Make My Move » released on UDP in 1993. The compilation closes as it opened with Alex Neri and Marco Baroni as Sound Set for « So In Love With You » a classic deep piano house track that samples the vocals of Colonel Abrams out on Oversky Records in 1992.

Ace night out last Friday at Le Sacré with the man Marcel Vogel who play a killer set. They will be up soon on the Lumberjacks in Hell soundcloud for you to check out.
Also I really loved what they have done with the sound system there. It's not easy to have loud and clear sound in an urban situation where neighbours are living next door, so hats off to the tech guys responsible for the sound there aka David Rousseau and whole Sacré team. To cut a long story short they managed to make the sound feel louder in the club (including low end) without raising sound levels ouside for the neighbours. The club is slightly smaller as a consequence but the result brilliant. Well done guys!

New episode of Mellow Madness and I'm super happy to be joined by @nickv for the second hour of the show, taking us on an eclectic, smooth journey through soulful sounds—including jazz-funk and many shades of electronic music—true to his rich musical culture and influences!

Born in Manchester, Nick V has remained a key figure in the house music scene since its early roots, with an influence that continues to shape today’s dancefloors. He started DJing in 1994 at the legendary Parisian club Le Queen, and quickly became a staple of the city’s nightlife through a series of iconic residencies. In 2008, he launched La Mona, a unique dance culture party that celebrates the deep connection between dance and electronic music, putting movement back at the heart of the club experience and becoming a true Parisian mainstay. Each month, Nick and his team kick off the night with free dance classes—like Voguing and Waacking—rooted in the early disco and house movements, creating one of the most welcoming and vibrant parties in the city.
Nick also runs the label Mona Musique, releasing music from talents like Hugo LX and Lea Lisa, and he curates the acclaimed House of Riviera compilations, which pay homage to forgotten gems from the classic Italian house scene (circa 1991–1994).

As usual, I’ll be taking care of the first hour expect cosmic jazz-funk, AOR, boogie, and a bit of broken beat and house, with tracks from @mysticjungle, @angles-morts new EP, @unisunofficial’s debut album ‘Hotel’ (just released today—happy release day!!), and @aldorande's new single 'Sweet Spot', from their upcoming album 'Trois' and many more!

This is a mix recorded from 1 to 2 am live at Mona in March 2015 at La Java. That night I invited Volcov to play with me every other hour, with Eugenio and Dusty Fingers as opening djs. Mix was recorded with the mic open for crowd noises !

Live mix recorded at Mona in Sept 2015. These are two parts put together. In between Tokyo DJ Kez YM played a one hour set and smashed it (you might be able to feel his energy carrying through into my second set!). I always share the night every other hour with my guest DJ that way we both cover all parts of the night, with its different energies. Hugo LX was the opening DJ for this party. Vinyl only.

Live in the mix at Mona on Sat 12th Dec 2016. These are the three parts of my mix put together in one file. The first part was at the start of the night around 1230 am just after the Vogue dance class, this is also when Ladybird comes on to the mic, I think she sounds great on that Soichi Terada track when she starts to sing. The second part was at 2am, just after Mike Huckaby's first set, and the third part around 4am until something like 445am. Again this is all unedited and mixed on vinyl only.

Ahead of its forthcoming compilation “House Of Riviera” Mona Musique releases a sampler EP that contains three tracks selected by label manager @NickV , taken from the golden age of Italian House Music, two of which are exclusive to the EP.

Side A is “I Have Got It” by @RickyMontanari and Davide Ruberto under the alias Riviera Traxx, a moniker shared with various other Riviera producers. Released in 1997, this is the only track that is out of the 1991/1993 time scale that the compilation focuses on, standing alone thanks to its tough hypnotic drum beat and diva vocal stabs that are very reminiscent of the Junior Vasquez NY Sound Factory era. This was initially featured on Riviera Traxx 4 in 1997, the fourth and final release of the cult “Riviera Traxx” series on legendary Italian label Irma records.

On the B side are two cuts that are typical of the deep and emotional vibe of classic Riviera House productions of the early 90s. Firstly @Ivan-Iacobucci, Fabrizio Cini and Nicola Dragani deliver “Tribal Love” under the name of Anxious. Initially released in 1992 this was the B side cut of the Saxample EP the first release of Hole records one of the first underground House labels in Italy run by @Ivan-Iacobucci that enjoyed over 30 releases over the 10 following years. Subway Ground Master complete the release with the superb “Queensway” taken from their only ever release in 1992 on Calypso, a sub-label of Irma records.

Over 25 years of digging, and more than 2 years in curation. @NickV ’s debut compilation pays homage to forgotten gems of the classic Italian House scene, circa 1991-1993.
In the early 1990s, Italy hosted one of the most flourishing scenes in the burgeoning world of House music. Whilst the majority of Europe was only just beginning to digest the arrival of this new musical genre born in the US, Italian clubs, DJs and labels were hot on the heels of their counterparts in the already established scenes of New York and London. The clubs of the Adriatic coast – also known as the Italian Riviera – principally concentrated around Rimini and Riccione, were full every weekend with crowds gathering to dance long into the early hours of the morning. The soundtrack was provided by the major US and UK acts from the day but also local resident DJs that had been honing their trade since the early 80s in the clubs and in the studio. By the early 90s, Italian House music was regularly exported around the world with labels such as UMM, Zippy, D-Vision, MBG, Flying, Palmares, DFC and Irma releasing tracks inspired by the original New York House and Garage sound, but with a very different, unique and emotional take. Distinct from both Italo Disco and Italo House, this was the specific aesthetic that was to become the House sound of the Riviera, the soundtrack of the golden era of Italian House music.
 
Nick V’s compilation on Mona Musique brings together 8 iconic tracks from this specific period, covering the whole spectrum of the riviera sound. From the powerful vocal tracks by Korda and Be Noir to the dubbier cuts by Syncopate and Underground Ghosts, without forgetting of course the characteristic Riviera deepness with tracks from Subway Ground Master, Centric House, Groove Sense and Optik. Artists featured include legendary DJs and producers from the day Ricky Montanari, Alex Neri, Enrico Mantini, MBG and Ivan Iacobucci. The compilation comes in a double gatefold sleeve with liner notes by Nick V illustrated by flyers and photos from the original Riviera days. This is a DJ friendly 45 RPM vinyl only release (due du licensing restrictions), all tracks have been remastered with the sound staying true to the dynamics of early 90s production. To be released on 20th May 2019 on Mona Musique.

La Mona Presents Bringing Dance Back Into Clubs

Here's a short one hour vinyl mix recorded live in December 2013 (around 4 am) at the infamous Jazz Attitudes party for their 5th anniversary at La Java in Paris. There was an all star line up on that night with sets from Jeremy Underground, Mad Mats, Betino and of course the Jazz Attitudes crew (Psycut, Koko and Switch Groove)!
Music wise, it's all about the Jazz sound you can find in different genres of dance music, as I go back to my more eclectic DJing roots : Acid Jazz, Drum & Bass, Jazz House, Broken Beat, Jazz funk of course Jazz ... and for extra club realness vibes you can hear the dancers cheering themselves on !

Artist Info:
Manchester born Nick V was living in the Northern England city in his formative years during the rise and subsequent explosion of Acid House music in the UK, a period of his life which laid the foundations for what has now become a fruitful career across the past three decades in electronic music.

Since his arrival in France back at the tail end of the 80’s Nick has become an integral part of the Parisian scene, holding many residencies over the years at some of the cities most respected clubs and showcasing his broad spectrum of styles, as a DJ, record collector and crate digger. Nick’s sound traverses through disco, deep techno, broken beat, boogie and dance floor jazz whilst keeping house music at the core of everything he does. 

His Mona events, which he describes as a ‘’dance culture party’’ and has been running since 2008, exploring the relationship between dance and electronic music. Amongst this he’s also heading up the affiliated Mona Musique, a vinyl only imprint which stands as a platform for him to release the authentic house sounds he’s become known for. With such an impressive history in house it’s no wonder Nick V has become a highly respected name in contemporary electronic music, with many more exciting projects in the pipeline and a passionate dedication to his work he’ll no doubt remain so for many years to come.
