Halloween is upon us, and with Halloween comes a creepy plethora of freaky cult films, scary soundtracks, and a fascination with the horrific and the macabre that overtakes culture by a storm. For this episode, host Azariah Mai sits down with saxophonist, multireedist, and composer Colin Stetson for our very own Halloween special. We’ll be getting spooky with it as we discuss his work on the soundtrack of the renowned 2018 horror film ‘Hereditary’ and the 2022 release of Texas Chainsaw Massacre the Netflix sequel. Colin has worked with the likes of Arcade Fire, Bon Iver and Bell Orchestre. We’ll also listen to the track ‘All Aboard’ from the upcoming film ‘The Menu’ hitting cinemas this November 18th, the soundtrack of which has been produced by stetson himself.

Simon Green aka Bonobo returns with one of the key cuts from his forthcoming album, 'Black Sands'. Drawing as much on the rhythms of two-step as the lush soundscapes for which he’s best known, 'Eyesdown' also features a remarkable vocal from Andreya Triana and enough fuzzed-out sub-bass for a binful of dubsteppers. Classic and contemporary, melancholy and exhilarating all at once, 'Eyesdown' sounds like the kind of record Massive Attack could be making if they were starting out now.

Remix duties are taken care of by Floating Points and Warrior One. Floating Points got his break at London’s renowned CDR Sessions a couple of years back. Since then his re-edits have been picked up and championed by the likes of Gilles P and Joy Orbison. Here, he stretches the original out into a broken ballad, the vocals increasingly disembodied, the keyboards playing robot soul. Warrior One, meanwhile, give it some of their trademark ravement vibrations. Whilst Appleblim & Komonazmu do a dubbed out warm minimal version.

It’s the orignal, though, that will keep drawing the listener back – strange, beatufiul, heartfelt and memorable, 'Eyesdown' is a key staging post in Green’s continuing, remarkable musical development.

In Hour 2 we welcome Khruangbin , the Texan trio who take influence from 1960's Thai funk (their name literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai ) and include Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald “DJ” Johnson on drums. Their debut album from 2015 ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ is steeped in the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspirations and was recorded at their spiritual home, a remote barn deep in the Texas countryside. The band listened to a lot of different types of music on the long drives out to the country but their favorites were 60s and 70s Thai cassettes gleaned from the cult Monrakplengthai blog and compilations of southeast Asian pop, rock and funk. Their mix is a sublime selection of music that includes Arthur Verocai, Return to Forever, Serge Gainsbourg, Miles Davis and some incredibly rare records from Christy Azuma, Ahmed Fakroun and Theodora Ifudu. You can catch them playing alongside Kendrick Lamar, Jamie XX and Kamasi Washington in Hyde Park, London on 2nd July, their US Tour kicks off in September and they have a remix release coming out in early June.

Following the ground-rupturing, genre-fusing success of their ballistic debut full-length, 2009’s Join The Q, The Qemists return with their brilliant second album, Spirit In The System, a bolder and more sophisticated beast betraying a confidence drawn from playing their wild noise to riotous audiences across the globe.

The Qemists – Liam Black, Leon Harris and Dan Arnold – formed while they were school-kids, looking for distraction from the boredom of life on the rural outskirts of Brighton, Rock kids quickly seduced by Rave and Jungle who spent every free hour rehearsing in a barn, or building Electronic tracks on computers. Following years spent experimenting in search of the perfect hybrid of Drum & Bass, Rock, Dubstep, Techno, Dancehall and everything else The Qemists loved, the group exploded onto the scene in 2006 with an acclaimed remix of Coldcut’s ‘Everything Is Under Control’, subsequently signing to Ninja Tune Records as artists in their own right.

Their debut album, Join The Q arrived in February 2009, following a blazing series of 12”s: “Iron Shirt”, ‘Stompbox’, ‘Drop Audio’, ‘Lost Weekend’ (featuring ex-Faith No More front-man Mike Patton), and 2009’s ‘Dem Na Like Me’ (featuring Wiley); two subsequent singles, ‘On The Run’ and ‘S.W.A.G.’, both found their way onto the Radio 1 Daytime Playlist. The Qemists have spent much of the time since taking their music to the people, playing a huge array of festivals across the world (including Japan, where Join The Q was the No 1 electronic album), audiences responding with fervour to their genre-mashing melee, returning to the studio late last year to begin work on this sophomore stomper.

While Spirit In The System delivers plenty of The Qemists trademark visceral energy – like ‘Your Revolution’, first single off the album, with its galloping Drum & Bass tempo changes and ribcage-rattling sub-bass riffs and captivating vocals from Brighton-based Matt Rose – it’s a deeper experience than its predecessor, the group having gained the confidence to touch feelings as well as move bodies. Long-time Qemists collaborator Jenna G delivers the brilliantly anguished vocal for ‘Hurt Less’, second single from the album, one of several cathartic emotional crescendos on the album. Other guest singers on the album include Rob Hawkins, vocalist for Welsh rockers The Automatic, who sings on muscular Techno pumper ‘Apocalypse’; Grime MCs Maxtsa and MC ID, who rap on the wailing-siren skank of ‘Renegade’; Chantel, singer with Invasion, whose vocals grace the windswept drama of ‘Fading Halo’ and drive searing Soul of ‘Life’s Too Short’; and Qemists live hype man Bruno Balanta, who joins Matt Rose for the pavement-shattering stomp of ‘Dirty Words’. Recent tour-mates Enter Shikari, meanwhile, provided vocals and guitar riffs for the riot-starting Thrash-Jungle of ‘Take It Back’.

The Qemists remain as brilliantly, defiantly indefinable as ever: live Rock musicians who are also cutting edge Electronic producers, equally at home in the rehearsal room, on the stage, or working their wizardry in the studio. “Our audience know its cool to be this kind of ‘cross-breed’,” says Liam. “It’s okay to be into all different kinds of music, you don’t have to limit yourself creatively. We can be producers, we can be a band, we can make the music we want to make.”

After their Radio 1 playlisted single, “On The Run,” The Qemists return with 'S.W.A.G.' a big, biiiiig tune about getting away with it. 

Featuring the vocals of sometime Alabama 3 frontwoman Zoe Devlin-Love, 'S.W.A.G.' is one of the most rocking moments from The Qems’ widely acclaimed debut album, 'Join The Q,' currently at number 1 on the Japanese electronic charts. Devlin-Love had been hanging out with Great Trainrobber Bruce Reynolds prior to recording and some of his attitude runs through her lyrics. The Qemists, meanwhile, more clearly a band here than studio producers, lay down ultra-heavy riffs with evident relish. 

Remixes come from a variety of sources. One of Britains biggest metal bands, Enter Shikari have become great friends of the band after they all toured Europe together and here they lay down a punishing dubstep-rock mix which jumps from acid squelch to headbang and back again. Interface offers up the most straight-up d&b mix of the package, first stringing out the original into something beautiful and ambient and then rolling it out as if there’s no tomorrow. Kilon Tek, by contrast, turns a corner into swinging electro-funk. 

With a festival programme taking in events as diverse as Reading/Leeds, Glade, Bestival, Glastonbury, Secret Garden, Summer Sundae, Summersonic (Japan) and Dour, The Qemists are set to be everywhere this summer. They were always a band first and foremost and nothing suits them better than getting up on stage with Jenna G and MC Bruno and making some noise. 

But what’s this 'S.W.A.G' all about? What does it stand for? “We usually say SWAG stands for ‘Sealed With A Gun,’” explain the group. “Although sometimes it stands for ‘Smashed With A Granny,’ depending on who’s asking.” The Qemists, it seems, aren’t going to get caught.

I had met Hannah back in high school through our school’s music program. From that early on I knew she was powerhouse singer but didn’t know that she wrote music on her own. After a couple of years, we slowly started building rapport about music and songwriting. When it came to social media I would listen to the new music she would post or watch the videos of her singing and playing guitar. I had seen that she released a full length that was recorded by one of my old friends from a music program I had been a part of, so I listened to it. Immediately I knew that this was not just mainstream singer songwriter music. It came from a deep place that sounded like the paradoxical void that’s filled to the brim with emotion, passion and expression.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (31st August) 3 years ago Solid Steel DJs Cheeba, Moneyshot and Food had the idea of collaborating on a version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album made entirely from the original sample sources, shortly after Moneyshot aired his mix of their ‘Check Your Head’ album in the same way. 

Finally the result is here, titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ - each of them have taken a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.

The mix was over half way completed when they heard the tragic news of MCA‘s death in May so the impetus to finish it was instantly doubled and new meaning given to the project. It goes without saying that this is also a tribute to Adam Yauch and the legacy he left behind and we hope it will be embraced by Beastie fans around the globe.

Fink - 'See It All'

Fink returns with the second single from his 3rd album of his Ninja Tune Records trilogy, “Sort of Revolution.” 

“See It All,” one of the album’s signature tracks, is blessed with falling piano lines, pulsing electric bass, and a driving rhythm which combines relentless propulsion with sublime subtlety. “Q&A” finds Fink in a deeply soulful and moody a cappella, building a tune from his own vocal parts - layers of harmony buzzing through your ears, as warm and rich as it is clever and hypnotic. Both of these tracks were recently recorded live on Fink’s latest Gilles Peterson Maida Vale session for BBC Radio 1, while the LP version of “See It All” has just been confirmed as the opening track on the season premiere on the longstanding and now infamous TV show CSI:NY. 

Remixes come from D*L*I*D (fresh from their stunning remix of Phoenix's "1901" single, this remix is only their second!), Emika (Ninja Tune's latest signing, bringing Berlin heaviness to the table), and Fink’s dub alter-ego, Sideshow (critically lauded and internationally sharing 12's with Martyn, remixing Appleblim, and releasing albums on Aus Music). D*L*I*D channels the spirit of J-Dilla, turning the original into a super-heavy head-nodder. Label-mate Emika turns the original into a dark and brooding epic that builds towards a huge finale – a la Massive Attack with serious skunk-paranoia. Sideshow once again showcases Fink’s production cred with an echo box and compression chamber, skillfully stripping the parts and fitting them together into brand new shapes. 

Fin Greenall, aka Fink, is among the more understated of the world’s ‘singer-songwriters’, relying on uncompromising quality of work and an astounding stage presence, rather than major label marketing budgets. A master lyricist and in-demand songwriter, having most recently co-written with John Legend for Legend’s ‘Evolver’ LP as well as two of Ninja Tune’s latest signings: Andreya Triana and Emika. Currently touring the UK with band mates Guy Whittaker on bass and Tim Thornton on drums, Fink is as hectic as ever with a tour of France throughout October; November spent in China, Hong Kong, and Vietnam; the USA in December; and Australia (including 3 headline evenings at the Sydney Festival) and Japan in January.

Fink - See It All (Radio Edit)

Our 25th Anniversary slot this week features Richard Dorfmeister who appeared on the show in 2003 and featured many times as one half of Kruder and Dorfmeister, as well as his project Tosca with Rupert Huber, amongst others. Opening with ECM artist Steve Tibbetts, his mix floats between Gui Boratto, his own lush edit for Selah Sue, acoustic guitar of Jeb Loy Nichols and the dubbed out Rhythm & Sound featuring Cornell Campbell on vocals. He then weaves through Pat Metheney, the dub version of Sunset from Grace Jones' last album, blues from Ry Cooder and ending with a couple of tracks from his recent Tosca album 'Odeon'.

Solid Steel (24th May) Following on from last year's treatment of 'Paul's Boutique' (by DJ Food, Cheeba and Moneyshot), United States of Audio does the same with De la Soul's groundbreaking album 3 Feet High and Rising. It's not just a mix, but more like an audio documentary about an album that is also about to celebrate it's 25th anniversary. In his own words;
'Several years in the making and including around 100 tracks, this is my personal tribute to De La Soul's '3 Feet High and Rising'. Using original sample sources, album tracks, interviews and rarities, 'How High's The Water Mama' tells the story of one of hip hop's most influential albums.
When De La Soul's debut album dropped in 1989 I was ten years old. Yet, by some stroke of amazing good fortune a cassette copy of '3 Feet High and Rising' found its way into my hands thanks to my best mate's older brother (though I'm pretty sure said brother had no idea of this fact!). The music was a revelation and had a significant influence in shaping my musical tastes - in fact I can't think of any other album that has had such a profound effect on me as this one. Thus '3 Feet High and Rising' holds a special place in my musical affections. Now, some twenty-five years after its original release, it's time to pay my respect to Pos, Dove, Mase, and Prince Paul...'
