Let The Bass Go

FTR: With this track I started off with organic drums thinking i was going to make more of an afrobeat track. I was searching through different bass sounds, i came up on something that i knew had potential for another song that was more electronic driven. Over time working with the bass, i ended up just marrying both the original organic concept with the more heavy, electronically driven, sounds to create something between a sci-fi classic and a break.

Opio: Spaceship was the first song we recorded for The Subconscious Mind EP. The track has a high intensity that makes you feel hyped. So I tried to match the intensity of the tracks lyrically. The beat is faced paced so I followed it rhythmically. The chorus specifically is not all the bells and whistles, it doesn't need to be. I am just trying to convey that as a real MC all I need is my mic.

FTR: This track stemmed out of the drums. I spent most of my focus on having the boom bap thump as hard as possible. It really didn’t need much more once i spent enough time with the drums, because the energy was there from the drums alone. From there, i wanted to keep it very simple with the melodic rhythm section. Finally, I added lead parts to keep the track progressive.. the leads were intended to be somewhat off, melodically, for a more erie vibe.

Hella Quick

FTR: Blow Sum Smoke consists of the mixture of organic drums and heavy electronics that have always been present in my sound. This song is a continuation of that, and is still open to lyrics. Melodically i wanted to proceed with a more laid back approach. Smooth chords, simple, but focused on the sound, opening up room for the raps, rather than going to far out there with different tangents.

Opio: Off the bat, this track was hella stoney. The music is a stimulant within itself and it put me in that frame of mind. The music reminded of how I like the mixture of marijuana and music, how cannabis can help open your mind to really hear something, like you have never heard it before. Most weed songs can be corny and cliche but when I heard this track it sounded like a classic, it sounded familiar. I wanted to provide a new take on a generally unapproachable subject. There's an authenticity to this song both musically and lyrically. It just has that dope vibe, it makes you feel good.

Opio:
Point of View was the song that I had the most fun recording. FTR and a bunch of my homies were with me in the studio and we were all sitting around talking shit and cracking jokes and those conversations manifested themselves into the lyrics. I really like the pacing of this track, the chorus and the verses mesh seamlessly, it’s just one of those songs that never gets old.

FTR: Point of view was created as my own version of a playful, uptempo party style track, blending analog drums with electronic synth. I made the track fairly simple with limited instrumentation and catchy hook melody, leaving it open enough for Opio to take over. Lyrically he connected with what I was going for in his own way.

FTR:
I made this track with a certain rhythmic swing in mind to subtly break your neck. Simple, mysterious, and lazy with somewhat of a strait forward Hip Hop vibe. The background lead i added was inspired by 70’s crime films. I remember Opio staying up all night in the forest shed studio to record the vocals this. The finished song felt like an honest representation of everything that could go on in your head while you’re vibing out in the middle of nowhere by yourself.

Opio:
I recorded Stoned Temple Pilot up at the cabin in Russian River late at night all by myself. The beat is dark dirty and dusty and it matched my surroundings perfectly. I was out there without any media stimulation, no cell phone service and spotty wifi at best which left me with nothing but my imagination. Lyrically,this song is quite visual, when you hear it you can almost see what I’m saying. like to paint pictures with words and I feel like this is a great example of that.

Opio Lindsey, known by his stage name, Opio (born 1974[1]), is a member of the four-member, Oakland-based underground hip hop group, Souls of Mischief, and the eight-member, underground hip hop collective, Hieroglyphics.

Since the early-1990s, Opio has always done double duty for Hieroglyphics as both an emcee and producer. As a teen, Opio hooked up with local rappers Tajai and A-Plus, whom he met through Casual, another emcee who was Opio's classmate and neighbor. 

Opio has appeared on all four Souls of Mischief albums, both Hieroglyphics studio albums, and released his solo debut, Triangulation Station, in February, 2005 on the Hieroglyphics' own independent label, Hieroglyphics Imperium Recordings.

Opio's second solo album, Vulture's Wisdom, Volume 1, was released on July 15, 2008 on Hieroglyphics Imperium Recordings as well. In 2012 Opio released Vulture's Wisdom, Volume 2. 

In 2014, in addition to performing his solo show, Opio has joined forces with Las Vegas hip hop DJ legend DJ Scientific and Aagee of Compound 7 to create a live hip hop experience called Opio Live.​ With Scientific on the ones and twos and Aagee playing multiple instruments and drum machines Opio's unique style and verses come to life. Opio accentuates his performance by playing multiple drum machines and vocal manipulators while still giving you a real hip hop show. Accompanied by visuals this show is an all-around hip hop experience.

March 3, 2015 Opio will be releasing his newest solo endeavor The Subconscious Mind EP. Produced soley by Free The Robots. This is not something to miss!
