Maurice El Medioni

Maurice El Medioni was born in 1928 in the Algerian port of Oran into a Jewish family. When he was nine, his brother brought home an old piano he had bought at a flea market. Within days Maurice taught himself to play popular French songs he had heard on the radio.

In 1942, American troops arrived in Algeria and soon young Maurice was playing the piano at the US Forces Red Cross Bar in Oran. When the soldiers used his piano to play Jazz, Boogie-woogie and Rumba numbers, he would watch their fingers and quickly incorporated what he learnt into his own unique style.

After the Americans went home he teamed up with three Rai singers, learnt from the Andalucian music culture and eventually became pianist at the "l'Opera" in Oran, where he performed with other great Jewish-oriental artists like Lillie Boniche and Lili Labassi.

In 1962, after 8 years of civil war, Algeria gained independence from France and most Algerian Jews, including Maurice and his family, were forced into exile in France. Starting over again, he worked as a tailor but never stopped playing and soon established himself as a star of the Parisian cabaret scene.

Today he lives in Marseilles and international recognition of his unequalled style is still growing. His music still evokes the cosmopolitan era of Oran in the 1940's but Maurice El Medioni is also looking forward, fulfilling a dream, on the critically acclaimed Descarga Oriental album with Roberto Rodriguez, of a Cuban interpretation of his music.

Boris Kovac, composer, instrumentalist and multimedia artist from Novi Sad, capital of the multiethnic region Vojvodina in former Yugoslavia, muses on the subject of his roots: "Our advantage is that people from 20 different nationalities live together in the Pannonian plains. So today no one can say which folklore my music stems from exactly. Me and my musicians - living in an urban situation, having no contact to the little villages in the country - we cannot retrace where the music comes from, It is anyway not necessary, I think. The crucial point is to use the sources as nourishment for your own creativity."

Whatever the sources, Boris Kovac's creativity is prodigious. Composer for theatre and film, director of the Ritual Nova Ensemble of multi-media artists, leader of the Ogledalo Music Theatre company, creator of "La Danza Apocalypsa Balcanica" with the LADAABA Orchest and the follow-up project, "La Campanella" and probably something else by the time you read this. Berlin's own sonic space explorers, the Cosmonautix, have just landed from their journeys to the outer reaches of Slavic musical madness. What have they brought back? "Energija", a pumping package of what they call "Russian Balalaika Speedfolk". The homecoming welcome party included pop specialists at the Initiative Musik, which has has officially given its stamp of approval to our explorers' debut album.
Jurij Gagarin would be proud. To enhance the head-n-hip rush, the band added their own special rocket juice in the studio. Plus, as a surprise, they invited singer Shura Lipovsky from the Netherlands into their spaceship to sing with them on the Yiddish song "Rabejnu Tam".
