Interview

What are your main instruments? Give us a quick tour of your music-making process!

- I work with a large palette of instruments. I have some hardware instruments and sequencers that I use mainly during live gigs. When I’m at home, working on new tunes, I almost exclusively work with software. However I add more and more “human elements” as soon as I figured out the main structure of the tune. For example I’ll add little bits of field recordings and other instruments like a guitar to enrich the mix and bring in some details that makes the track stand out. But every tune is different. I have songs that I have only created with a Korg Kaoss Pad and nothing else. So every one is a new journey and a new process of learning for me.

How would you describe your style?

- It’s kind of complicated. I have produced so many tunes with different moods and styles…but in general, I guess you could call my style “Electronic Listening Music”…yes, I like that.

What is your main motivation for making music?

- Basically it’s just an outlet for my creativity. There are a few other (creative) things that I like to do but I feel that making music is the only thing that stays with you for a long time. I like to listen to my creations, it makes me feel good to listen to older tunes and see my progress. All these things come together and make me go on and push my boundaries. Also, being a big vinyl fan, I’d like to see my name on a piece of wax sometimes!

How did you start with creating tunes?

- The first music making experience was kind of a retarded “funny” band that I had with a friend. We created tunes on a cheap acoustic guitar that I had. We sang about our teachers, people from our neighbourhood we didn’t like and about cookies and stuff. We even recorded a cassette tape and sold it to a few people…unbelievable! I think I was 14 back then.

I started taking things more serious when I got an electric bass and a multieffect pedal back in 2001 when I was 15! I was heavily into Alternative Music. I listened to a lot of Sonic Youth, System Of A Down, Tool – that kind of stuff. Me and a few friends had this band and we covered a lot of songs but didn’t came up with any of our own material. But that really didn’t matter because we were quite good at covering other tunes. At least I remember us being good...Anyway, when I was at home I had no patience to learn any of the usual chords or scales or anything on how to write a decent tune. So I did experiment with sounds. All I had for recording was Audacity and I REALLY tried to get something out of that. I combined all these little recordings of strange sounds that I had, timestretched them, played them backwards and so on and this is how it was for quite some time.

I had always played with other musicians and it was fun you know, getting drunk and all that, but after some time I just knew that I had to create my own music to get something going. So I did that and started Dear Ms Dead in 2006, which was my first project with some decent songs and a lot of experimentation. The songs were pretty much all guitar playing, some improvised beats and a lot of droning and trying to get interesting sounds out of my beat up guitar. I still treasure these recordings because they sound so innocent and limited. But in limitation lies the essence of creativity and that is one thing I must remind myself of every time I start with a new project.

How did the two songs come together? Is there any story behind it?

- Actually there is no real story behind it. I think a label’s debut Single should somehow indicate where things are going to go. I tried to think of my own “Nighttrippin” experiences and some things that did make an impression on me.

Sitting in a club, drunk, watching the strobes, feeling the world go by in slow motion – that is what “Warm Strobe” is all about. Musically this is new terrain for me. I just noticed after multible listenings what a heavy Postrock influence is present in this tune. All these drones, strings, the tremolo guitar, the build up of tension remind me of GYBE! and My Bloody Valentine. It sounds very ambitious but, to be honest, I just wanted to make it as trippy as possible.

“City Awakens / Countryside” on the other hand is a very sober tune. There are a lot of field recordings of a busy city with cars going by and people shouting. And you also have this heavy beat going on. The contrast with the barely audible synth line and the really sweet guitar playing is what makes this tune. I wanted to express how I feel about the city (especially after a night out). It’s good for a while but then you just want to move on and leave that busy world behind for some time.

Have you released a record before?

- Not profesionally, no. But you can look at my bandcamp page and purchase a self-released CD copy of my 2012 album “20:34”.

Name a few of your influences and/or favorite musicians!

- So I’ll limit myself here and just name a few influences: Sonic Youth, The Beatles, Brian Eno, Radiohead (especially Jonny Greenwoods guitar playing), Liars, Miles Davis, the book “17” by Bill Drummond, nature, my wife, our daughter.
