French producer my.head has never been one to buy into music industry norms or grasp at false hopes of fame and glory, preferring to glide under the radar for the better part of the last half-decade, churning out beatific, genre-spanning tracks on his own and across collaborations with grime entrepreneur Last Japan and Norwegian singer/producer Ida Dillan. With an aesthetic based in hip hop and R&B, my.head also touches on soundtrack music, ambient and IDM, bridging the gap between myriad sounds by tactfully drawing it all into his fuzzy, melancholic universe.
 
His newest project, the cinematically-focused En Noir, will be released on May 12 via Kastle’s Symbols label, and the effort comes out as his most complete, heart wrenching effort to date. Born out of hardship and a solitary, 18 month recording process, En Noir looks to Sci-Fi movies, video games and contemporary hip hop and R&B as touchstones, functioning as both a sonic accompaniment for a yet-to-be-realized film and a deeply affecting home listening experience.

And while you might recognize certain pop motifs on tracks like “I Want U” and “Torture” they’ve been abstracted through my.head’s singular outlook, the result being a tape that’s both deeply familiar and vividly alienating at the same time. When En Noir hits a fever pitch of emotion on tape closer “Reversed Wish”, a heartwrenching R&B ballad, drowned under a mile of sludge, it’s clear that the French artist didn’t pull any emotional punches across the EP. It might not be the festival-ready party music of our generation, but my.head has hit a universal nerve with En Noir and the tape will live on well beyond Summer 2015.

Combining dance-forward rhythms with carefully crafted melodies and texture-heavy sound design, Molo walk the line between club fare and headphone music effortlessly and Shapes is the type of release that is best played loud, but doesn’t necessitate a dancefloor. Songs like the aforementioned “Conditions” and “Wolves” work classic instrumentation into a forward-thinking production aesthetic, allowing rich, soothing synths to play adjacent homemade percussion sounds, the resultant synthesis oozing an inherent humanity that’s all too rare in most electronic compositions. Born out of a background in sound design and an innate sense of atmosphere, Shapes has the ability to fill whatever room or headspace it’s played in, making it a perfect fit for the Symbols roster and a dramatic step forward for this talented London duo.

Having already featured the works of demonically-minded artists WWWINGS, DJ Heroin and hnrk (as SCHISM), Symbols welcomes Brussels-based Bulma into the fold for a dynamic, high tension label debut. Comprised of three club-forward efforts, Crime Scene sees the French producer take his already intense sound to its logical extreme, contorting existing club tropes into fascinating, often grotesque new shapes. Having previously released on web-focused outlets like WDIS and Cult City, Crime Scene further solidifies his kaleidoscopic approach, which takes in a range of contemporary hardcore musics and flips them completely on their head. 

Take for example the EP closer “Unity”, a disorienting medley of trap drums, metallic breathing and a sample that proposes Future as gutteral-yelping metal vocalist. It’s rhythm forward and dense, invoking cataclysmic change without forgoing the necessary dancefloor motions. “Ronin” takes a similar approach, full of razor-edged synths, disembodied vocals and ratcheting arrangements that all but drop out for entire passages. “Legion” eschews the peaks and valleys of the other two tracks, a battle-ready number that would have been primed for the war dub frenzy of late 2013. Of course, Symbols fans will be prepared for the onslaught, a continuation of the label’s exploratory dive into the depths of sci-fi club forms.

Houston’s Santa Muerte arrive on Symbols this August 11th via the Penitencia EP, a five track effort that sees the trailblazing duo reach out to new collaborators as they further establish themselves at the nexus of a global array of bleeding edge sounds. Inflected by pulsing kicks, alluring hooks and grandiose synth work, Penitencia features guest vocals from Lunarios on the melancholic anthem “Bad Feelings”. On the production side, fellow Texan Creepside assists on the haunted “Y Riddim” while Los Angeles’ TenTwentySeven adds a lithe dembow energy to “Syngian”. Through the collaborations though, Panch and Sines’ signature sound is present throughout Penitencia, found in the high tension progressions and synesthetic patterns that hue the entirety of the release.

Having previously released on Infinite Machine and their own Majia label, Santa Muerte have become one of the staples of American club music, crafting out a foothold in a booming Houston scene and gaining fans the world over. Penitencia is rounded out by remixes from two other contemporary titans, the first a revved up effort from NAAFI’s Zutzut and the latter a moody take from Symbols boss Kastle. The two remixes finish off a package that sees Santa Muerte continue pushing their expansive vision of hybrid club music, this time bringing a number of fresh faces into their increasingly large tent.

CELES7E - From Ashes EP (SMBL053)

Russia has launched some of the most prominent avant-club acts into international orbit in recent years, several of whom have found a home on the Symbols roster. CELES7E is the latest to join up and is set to instantly make his mark with From Ashes -- seven tracks of towering industrial noise, video game score dramatics and gorgeously contrasting elements. Those elements range from the familiar to the alien, the classical to the futurist, each imbued with an all-encompassing immersive spirit.

With only one guest feature, fittingly provided by likeminded producer Eyne, who also designed the project's cover art, From Ashes provides a stark invitation into CELES7E's aesthetic vision, laid out in crisp, multi-layered brilliance. Viscous sub bass underlies the whole project while blasts of industrial noise mar pristine piano melodies and disembodied choir vocals. Following a several month hiatus, Symbols returns on December 21 with the release of Origami Girl’s Spirit Bomb, the Japanese artist’s label debut and a follow-up to albums on Collapsed Structures, Hellscape and PLUS100. Building out from her previous work, Spirit Bomb features a fragmented take on eskibeat grime and classic video game music, throwing both into a blender at breakneck pace while pulling out eccentric fragments of groove and noise.

With grime’s building blocks and a series of slick, squishy video game sounds as her constituent elements, Origami Girl’s world starts narrow on Spirit Bomb, but tends to constantly splash into new territory. New tempo potentialities, decontextualized samples and often grotesquely bright arrangements sit next to familiar sounds, avoiding nostalgia for a more progressive approach.

Whereas previous work has focused on extended environmental pieces, tracks like “Crystal Bandwitch”, “Clairvoyance” and “Silver Phantom” are short and sweet, giving just enough room to uncanny sample choices without losing any of the core directive. Following a several month hiatus, Symbols returns on December 21 with the release of Origami Girl’s Spirit Bomb, the Japanese artist’s label debut and a follow-up to albums on Collapsed Structures, Hellscape and PLUS100. Building out from her previous work, Spirit Bomb features a fragmented take on eskibeat grime and classic video game music, throwing both into a blender at breakneck pace while pulling out eccentric fragments of groove and noise.

With grime’s building blocks and a series of slick, squishy video game sounds as her constituent elements, Origami Girl’s world starts narrow on Spirit Bomb, but tends to constantly splash into new territory. New tempo potentialities, decontextualized samples and often grotesquely bright arrangements sit next to familiar sounds, avoiding nostalgia for a more progressive approach.

In our first dance floor concentrated release for awhile, we welcome Leda Stray & High Class Filter who have been pushing boundaries within the UK funky and leftfield bass scene. Both top producers in their own right and together we see a hyper-focused 3-track EP that gets straight to the point.

Title track, 'Venga', features Nané who has also shared her talents with Mina & Roska. Discordant pads, rib shaking sub bass and massive tribal drums lend the energy to her vocal prowess. 'Bengal' drops into a quiet before the storm with an onslaught of percussion and your daily dose of steel drums. 'Sphinx' rounds the EP out with a nice blend of jungle-era pads and effects interspersed with thick square waves and pan flutes.
