It's been a while - STANISLAWA

This week's mix is brought by Stanislawa, is an emerging DJ from the Brussels techno scene. She is the founder and co-director of the queer collective Deep Down East (est 2017), which focuses on Eastern european techno artist representation by organizing techno parties in Brussels and abroad. 
Her sound calls for a rebellious free space, which she spices up with uplifting beats, taking you on a shared journey of techno through nostalgic groove. Her passion for trancy tracks goes back to her childhood during which she discovered trance, hypnotic trance, jungle and acid techno when digging in her father’s cds.
Having played all nighters for bars or waking up the crowd when playing at Sine Fine after party. Stanislawa’s large selection goes from ambiant trance acid 125bpm tracks to 170 bpm uplifting melodies. You can also find her playing during the week in the most famous Belgian wooden box: Kiosk Radio.
Staśka has travelled around Europe in 2022 getting booked in the Netherlands, Berlin, Poland, Luxembourg and Switzerland.
She recently started playing under the name of DJ WAITRESS, a nostalgic kitsch alias.

Her journey began amidst her father's CDs, where the hypnotic trance, jungle, and techno of the 90s ignited a lifelong passion.
Founder of the Deep Down East collective, she has solidified her presence in the Belgian scene, gracing iconic venues such as Fuse, Decadance, C12, and Funke. 
Collaborations with Boiler Room, Modul’air, Paradise City and collectives like Not Your Techno, Alliance Club and Zaika have further enriched her artistic journey.

Stanislawa (she/her)  always keeps an open-mind and an open-heart to push her values onto her music.  Living between Brussels and Amsterdam, she is well known to provide the crowd with her top-tier selected 90’s trance, sexy techno grooves and progressive house bangers.
Founder of the queer party collective Deep Down East (2017), she also initiated “Slava” a fund-raver for Ukraine, together with Veselka and Zaika collectives, and  “Rave Against Fascism” where she gathered many Belgian Flinta+ collectives. 
She strengthened her presence in the Belgian scene, gracing iconic venues such as Fuse, Decadance, Funke, Modul’air, Ancienne Belgique, Kompass as well as C12 where she works in the curation team. Further gigs have enriched her artistic journey in Belgium such as Boiler Room, Paradise City Festival, Pukkelpop and Dour Festival, in Berlin for Club OST, in Denmark for Purple Rave Club & Module, in Luxembourg at Ground, in the Netherlands for Ra:dius Festival and PIP Den Haag, in France for dopamine wifi and in Poland for Ulica Elektryków. 
In May 2024, Stanislawa released her first EP, Forever Strong, featuring 4 very personal tracks merging hard-hitting 909 kicks with 90s trancy leads. You can now find her on the new Brussels based radio “gimic” for her monthly residency where she will dig into her chill vibes gem collection.

STANISLAWA blends her values and music, crafting 90s trance, sexy techno grooves, and progressive house bangers. Founder of queer party collective Deep Down East (2017), she co-created “Slava” for Ukraine and “Rave Against Fascism.” Active in Belgian venues, festivals across Europe, and radio “gimic,” she debuted her EP "Forever Strong" in 2024 with personal, hard-hitting tracks.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: How was your first DJ gig?
𝙎𝙏𝘼𝙉𝙄𝙎𝙇𝘼𝙒𝘼: I started DJing when I was 12, playing at small parties in my village during my teenage years. But my first proper club gig happened completely by chance. I was working at a bar, and after my shift, I went to a small club where some friends were hanging out. I went behind the booth to say hi to the DJ and somehow ended up playing an unplanned 30-minute closing set. A few weeks later, I returned to the club for a proper, announced set. The owner recognized me and, as a thank-you for the music, gifted me an Adidas tracksuit. That moment really stuck with me, it felt like a small but meaningful initiation into the scene.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: Intimate club vs. festival atmosphere. Your pros and contras:
𝙎𝙏𝘼𝙉𝙄𝙎𝙇𝘼𝙒𝘼: I’ve always been a club kid. I started going out in Brussels clubs at 15, worked as a student party promoter, and launched Deep Down East when I was 17. Clubs shaped me, not just musically, but socially. They introduced me to good friends, my chosen family, and a sense of belonging. Brussels clubs, in particular, have this unique, close-knit energy, whether it’s at C12, where I work and know everyone, or at Fuse, where the artist care team makes you feel welcome, whether you're playing or just passing through.

Festivals came later for me. I couldn’t afford to go as a teenager, so I always told myself, I’ll go when I get booked. That mindset stuck with me, and last summer, I was so happy to experience Dour and Pukkelpop for the first time, by playing there. The energy at festivals is wild, the lineups are massive, and the scale is completely different from a club. But after my set, I always love to retreat backstage; being in a huge crowd can feel overwhelming, especially for neurodivergent babes.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: “The future is queer!” Is this true?
𝙎𝙏𝘼𝙉𝙄𝙎𝙇𝘼𝙒𝘼: Absolutely. Queer culture has always been at the forefront of nightlife, music, and creative spaces, it’s where new ideas, sounds, and movements are born. The DIY ethos, the resilience, the sense of community, these things shape not just club culture, but the way we think about inclusivity and freedom in music. And beyond nightlife, you can feel the shift in wider culture. More and more people are embracing fluidity, rejecting rigid norms, and creating their own spaces rather than waiting for permission. The future isn’t just queer, it’s unapologetically so.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: Any secret spots in Brussels you can recommend?
𝙎𝙏𝘼𝙉𝙄𝙎𝙇𝘼𝙒𝘼: SuperFourchette! It’s a restaurant and record store in the city center where I used to work. The food is amazing, fresh, well-sourced, and good whether you’re vegetarian or not. But beyond that, they also host punk concerts a few times a month, which gives the place an extra edge.

𝙑𝙎𝙇𝙆: What does your upcoming summer look like?
𝙎𝙏𝘼𝙉𝙄𝙎𝙇𝘼𝙒𝘼: Let’s just say it’s shaping up to be a good one! Some returns to festivals I loved playing in past years, some exciting debuts at places I’ve been dreaming of… but I won’t spoil too much just yet. Keep an eye on my socials, announcements are coming soon.
