It is so nice to put out a mix on soundcloud again, after a very long break. Due to personal reasons and a giving my focus more to live performances, I neglected my favorite platform a bit.

This set is the first of my new mix series for Proton Radio- "As within so Without". Well-respected Proton family have done so many valuable contributions to the electronic music scene over the last years. Now they are pushing for streaming to be fair for everyone- labels, artists, DJs with this new mix series initiative. We welcome Subcora for the eighty-eighth edition of the 'Deep In Mix' series.

In the ever-evolving electronic music landscape, Subcora stands out as a DJ who masterfully blends her cultural heritage with contemporary sounds. Originally from Istanbul, Türkiye, she has spent the last seven years rooted in Liverpool, UK. Subcora's journey into DJing began organically from her role as a music selector. It wasn't until her time in Berlin in 2016 that she delved into the technical side of DJing, a pivotal moment that set the stage for her subsequent success. Upon moving to Liverpool in 2017, she swiftly became a fixture in the local music scene, broadcasting her eclectic radio shows on the former local online radio station, Melodic Distraction.

Her sets take audiences on a journey through various genres, showcasing her deep musical understanding and ability to captivate a crowd. While she often ignites the dancefloor with house music during shorter sets, it's in her extended five to six-hour performances where her true artistry shines. These marathon sessions see her exploring breakbeat influences, embracing old-school club sounds, and seamlessly blending melodic house with electronica, creating a nostalgic yet fresh experience for her listeners. Subcora draws inspiration from various musical influences, ranging from house producers to 70s rock bands. She particularly admires electronic music maestro Four Tet and the innovative Nightmares on Wax. Aspiring to match the charismatic energy of Fatboy Slim, Subcora strives to infuse the same vibrant dynamism into her performances.

Her performances include appearances at prestigious festivals like Afrikaburn and the Liverpool International Music Festival, as well as renowned venues such as Egg London and Invisible Wind Factory. As a resident DJ at establishments like Buyers Club and Futureyard, and with regular gigs at Kazimier Garden, Subcora continues to push the boundaries of her craft. Her participation in the Africa Oye festival, the UK's largest free celebration of African music and culture, further underscores her commitment to embracing diverse musical expressions. Welcome back to the Magician On Duty Journey Series!

On this week's editions we welcome @Subcora

Originally from Istanbul and currently based in Liverpool, Subcora is an academic day time, and a music alchemist/DJ night time. After years of being involved in music through different roles, i.e., as a singer, music writer and interview editor, she is now mostly focusing on DJing. She is keen on harmonising mostly melodic, instrumentally rich songs with a subtle groove, within different genres of house and different modes. 

Recently she joined Liverpool based DJ duo Maschinenfunk and now together they run nights that bring rhythmic, percussive & atmospheric sounds to the city. She also hosts a monthly live radio show at community radio Melodic Distraction.

"Most of us, unfamiliar with the nuances of alchemy, view it as the predecessor of our modern sciences, like medicine, chemistry, metallurgy. But, it was much, much more. The alchemists were dissolving and regenerating the elements together with their experiences and their identity to create something completely new within themselves. As the famous alchemical saying goes: "Solve et Coagula", dissolve and coagulate.

Combining sounds is a form of alchemy as well. De-solidfying and de-constructing sounds together with our own journeys, we actively transform and evolve. Like an alchemist, I first analysed and separated these sounds on the one hand; consolidated and integrated them with my own diary on the other other hand. Let’s now hear not only the pairs Gold/Silver, Sulphur/Mercury but also the pairs Sun/Moon, Spirit/Matter, and Light/Dark ."

Wow wa wi wa! Our longterm friend Subcora is back for her second mix for sunset grooves and being it her second she has put together something very different than her usual style of play. (Exactly what we want at Sunset Grooves!). It is a fantastic mix full of surprising grooves touching different genres. Despite being different it still has that Subcora touch of smooth transitions and a delightful flow throughout. 

Currently residing in Liverpool, she is focusing a lot more on her live gigs as well  the radio show "Melodic Distraction" and therefore we are lucky that she has put together this super mix for our ears. Sunset Grooves Podcast #136 - Subcora

Hi everyone,

As the year 2018 approaches to its end, I wanted to share one of the highlights of my year. I have been a part of the lovely Melodic Distraction family since last June; a community based radio based in Liverpool, UK, which has been a great experience! 
The show is named as Archetype;  I believe we can reflect on the different archetypes hidden in our subconscious through a journey on layers of sound. Every 4th Friday of the month, Archetype is streamed live for 2 hours from Melodic Distraction Studio, broadcasting various themes, genres on each show and as well as occasionally hosting special guests:)

November '18 Archetype spans some of my favorite slower songs. This is bit messier recording though, as I mixed 3-4 songs occasionally, meshed  some loops, effects,etc.. Hopefully you will enjoy the rawness of it :) Just top up the sound a bit and enjoy the ride!

Archetype by Subcora, November '18 / Melodic Distraction

The Spring Equinox is here and we are ready to re-charge with the energy of the upcoming eclipses of the spring. I recorded a mix with some of the songs that might ease this transition with gentle, melodic and yet charging, global sounds. 

The mix is specially dedicated to my friends and collaborators, Soul Engineers, based in Istanbul, Turkey. A team of hardworking, passionate music lovers who are doing great events as well as contributing to others, bringing light to Istanbul scene in the hardest times.

Eclipse Nocturnae // Special Mix for Soul Engineers

Hi everyone! I have been quiet here for some time, as I was mostly focusing on live performances and radio shows over the last few months. In August, I did a Turkish music special program, on my monthly radio show Archetype, at Melodic Distraction, Liverpool. I received lots of support and interest for the show (please check my mixcloud for the recording). Then I thought, why not I do another podcast dedicated to my home country's music. This time a bit shorter, cleaner with no chatting, and slowly building in tempo.

Here, you will hear mostly contemporary edits of some classic Turkish tracks that I have grown up with. They vary from Turkish Anatolian funk, folk, pop to disco and classical. Although the edits are mostly recent releases, original tracks' release times also vary, mostly from 70s and 80s, and a few from 90s and later on.

I really hope you enjoy this one :) And if you do, any kind of support would make me very happy <3 I will share the track list soon! But my special thanks goes to @fattish for sharing all his edits with me :)

Turkish Music Special Mix

Friends, 
We have entered a year which I believe will be quite special. I believe in symbols and numbers are the most powerful symbols. 2 and 0 together will bring transformations. Those might not be special in the way we expect, but it will be special in the way that serves the collective most. Nevertheless, we will survive this new era. Because we have something quite similar, under our skins, don't we?

Hi friends,

I hope you and your loved ones are all well and staying safe. 

There goes our special year..Harder than I thought it would be, with more transformations than I thought it would have. What a time we are living! When you scratch the agony on the surface, do you also feel like this crisis is making us go back to our roots, our connections with others? Our friends, families, neighbours, communities? Our tribes? We were so separated and disconnected.  Shaked up by a crisis, we are now going back to our tribes. That's why this whole epidemic is becoming a triumph of the tribes for me...

I hope you enjoy this uplifting mix, full of tribal, afro, groovy sounds with occasional disco touch.  More or less the sound I like to play on live sets. I am celebrating the massive awakening and I want you to join me. Stay safe :)

Some of my good followers know that I do a monthly radio show called Archetype on Melodic Distraction radio (based in Liverpool), every 4th Friday of the month.  On Archetype, I explore a different theme each month and occasionally I invite guests to join me. Last month's show, despite being recorded from home instead of the usual livestreaming I do from the radio, was so much fun for me. I imagined myself taking a journey in a jungle and explored dub inspired sounds a bit more with my usual dedication to groovy side.The show was dedicated to nature's takeover that we observe all around the world..I wanted to share this program with soundcloud community as well. Q:  Good morning Pinar :) I hope you agree to answer a few random and fun questions to share with our listeners? 

*Of course, bring it on :)*

Q: To start you off tell us what song puts you in a good mood when you wake up in the morning? 

*I usually don’t start my day with music…I much prefer to hear the sounds of the environment in the morning. When I do, these days I prefer soulful music from the legends like Erkyah Badu, Bill Withers, Aretha Franklin, Al Green*

Q: Now should you ever, but let’s hope not, be stuck on an island, which music album would you bring with you and why? 

*What a though question to ask to a DJ! :D  
I might bring “Love Deluxe” from Sade. It is a fantastic album and with its soothing atmosphere, would do the job of keeping me calm and sane well.  Can I also take a Queen album, for flashbacks to my teenage years*

Q: Moving on to serious issues, what is your favourite cocktail to drink during a sunset? 

*Any time of the day- I will take a piña colada!*

Q: Once the global pandemic is over, which festival would be the one you would go to first and why? (it could be a club, if you got no festival in mind) 

*I really want to go to Fusion Festival in Germany. But before that, I will first support the local scene and hit our amazing club, 24 Kitchen Street, in Liverpool. *

Q: Which artist/band do you secretly love but you are embarrassed to admit? (i.e. you have been to their concert, you know the lyrics.) 

*No embarrassment here with anything I listen But okay… maybe it would be bit unexpected if I admit how much I enjoy some of the contemporary pop artists these days, such as Dua Lipa.*

Q: If you could open a show for any artist, who would it be and why? 

*I would really like to do a warm up for Four-Tet, so that I can see his live performance finally (tickets always sell out quickly:P) and maybe have a pint with Kieran after. His creativity is really inspiring for me and as far as I can tell from his instagram, all that amazing tunes come from very simple set-ups. Would be amazing to know more about him. *

Q: Lastly, regarding this mix you have done for us, can you tell us a little bit of your thought process behind choosing the tracks you chose? 

*When I think of sunset grooves vibes, and sunsets in general, I see myself in a mood that I am between chilling and dancing- the perfect warm-up state. So, I wanted to reflect that image I had and mixed tracks that are somehow trippy but yet groovy, with occasional familiar references You will hear some of my signature tribal sounds, as well as edits of classic grooves and some recent works of contemporary artists from the downtempo scene.*

I’m an eclectic DJ based in Liverpool, UK, originally from Istanbul, Türkiye. My passion lies in blending melodic sounds across genres like deep house, tech house, melodic house, afro house, lo-fi, garage, downtempo, world music, disco, and soul.

Someone once described my sound as “trippy yet groovy” and I think that still sums it up pretty well.

While my live sets are more dancefloor-oriented, I love creating mixes for streaming that are better suited to home listening.
