London-based The Young Punx return with a 2-track release celebrating their love of all things disco and bass, collaborating with their close friends and kings of the Italian Turbofunk sound, Birdee (Southern Fried) and Reset! (Cheap Thrills, Dim Mak), with GIRLS LIKE DISCO BOYS LIKE BASS'.

A club-ready disco and bass laden teaser for the forthcoming 3rd Young Punx album, the tracks showcase the flamboyant musicianship of The Young Punx whose brass-heavy funk stylings have previously been heard as the disco band in Dizzee Rascal’s “Dirtee Disco”, as well as performing as the live backing band for Dizzee on the BBC Electric Proms and Glastonbury 2011, and in their legendary 2005 makeover of De’Lacy’s ‘Hideaway’. 

The Young Punx' Hal Ritson explains that the release’s title is derived from a tongue in cheek ‘rule of DJing’.

	“It all started off as a bit of a joke amongst our DJ pals. The joke being men never go out onto the dancefloor first. But, you play some disco and the girls flock to the floor. Naturally the boys follow on then, and if you went bass heavy, the party would really begin to kick. ‘Girls Like Disco Boys Like Bass’ became code for this pattern!  Of course in fact everyone likes both Disco and Bass, so don’t take it too literally!”

Setting the tone for their return you can expect to see more sideways looks at the electronic music scene from The Young Punx in the coming year, including a brand new long-player full of surprises.

The Young Punx emerged in the mid 2000’s as buzz producers, pioneered by DJs such as Annie Nightingale, Eddy Temple-Morris and Judge Jules, famed for their jubilant shredding of genre boundaries, mashing up different dance music forms, retro music sounds and pop culture references with glee, wit and musicality.

Since their 2009 album “Mashpop and Punkstep” The Young Punx have been focussing on developing their label, MofoHifi Records, home to the esteemed emerging producers, Bobby Tank, Phonat & Alizzz.

I'd totally forgotten about this official remix of Go West's "We Close Our Eyes" we did in 2005. A DJ got in touch asking for it today and it seems to be virtually impossible to buy or find now. This comes from the "Call On Me" era of simple sidechain loops of 80s pop choruses which might be a bit dated now, but you know, you can't keep a good chorus down!

"Harlem Breakdown" – the opening track from The Young Punx’ forthcoming 3rd album – is a fierce wall of funk guaranteed to get your stink face on.

In true 'Punx' style - mashing up genres and tearing up the production rule book – the act created this track by writing and performing their own take on the virtuoso horn-funk and jazz of 1970s New York. Performed by the punx and their regular live band, the music was recorded entirely on vintage 70s recording equipment for that authentic retro dirt. Then, back at base camp The Young Punx remixed and mashed up their own recording to build a filthy electro stomp like Daft Punk on Tequila and steroids.

"Kowloon Kickback" is a labour of love I've been working on for 10 years now, which has taken so long as it involved writing, scoring and recording a full 1930s swing big band track using all original 1930s recording equipment, which isn't the easiest thing to do!

Crystal Blackout was conceived In an alleyway in Central Berlin the night the Berlin Wall came down the result of a celebratory and drunken union between a black American serviceman from Memphis and an East German music hall singer.

9 months later he was born an orphan, his mother dying in childbirth and his father posted to the Far East and killed in action.

Adopted informally by his mothers cabaret group he grew up a child of the stage, cared for warm heartedly but rarely well, by a rag tag group of drag queens, show girls and musicians, most of them broke and alcoholic.

Making a slender living as a stage hand, barman and escort his 20's were lost in a haze of drink and drugs in the Berlin club underground. But following the death by of two of his closest friends in one night by overdose, he has taken to the stage to tell his stories the only way he knows how. By changing his name, and singing the blues, wearing too much mascara, with an 808 drum machine at his side.

Now in 2025, we bring it to the dancefloor as a groovy, piano-driven house rework that blends heritage with forward-looking club energy.

Our version keeps the timeless hook and melodic spirit of the original while injecting deep house basslines, live piano solos reminiscent of early Chicago house, and an uplifting modern production. Vocals are newly recorded by South African singer and actor Sifiso Mazibuko, adding a fresh interpretation while paying tribute to Steve Monite’s legacy.

The Young Punx – Mashpop & Punkstep: DnB Mixes

The Young Punx team up with Croatian drum & bass powerhouse Kodin to reimagine tracks from their cult 2009 album Mashpop & Punkstep through a dark DnB lens.

At the centre of the EP is “Like Dat” (feat. Count Bass D) — a tough, neuro-tinged rework that blends heavyweight low-end with occasional Blade Runner-style synth atmospheres. Bronx-born indie-rap legend Count Bass D delivers surreal, coded verses — retelling The Young Punx’s tour stories in a hybrid of Tennessee/Atlanta slang and clipped London RP — over Kodin’s cinematic production.

Also included is Kodin’s reinvention of the ragga-tinged “Juice and Gin”, the remix that first caught The Young Punx’s ear and sparked the whole collaboration. His distinctive sound design and uncompromising grooves push the track into deeper, futuristic territory.

To complete the package, Phonat’s Punkstep Mix of “Ready For The Fight” is included — a rock-meets-drum & bass collision driven by distorted guitars, perfectly reflecting the culture-clash ethos of the original album. Previously released, it’s included here to round out the DnB collection.

Visuals for the release come from Dutch artist Han Hoogerbrugge, whose typographical chaos of lyrics set against pixelated sea creatures and cityscapes offers a uniquely abstract response to the music.

Welcome to WPUNX, a forthcoming concept album about a rogue station still pumping out joy while the world burns. Every track is a different broadcast; every signal a clash of genres that shouldn’t work but somehow does.

“Jack This Town” is the first teaser transmission. At its core it’s a cheesy disco record, big, shiny and grinning, but as always we can’t leave well enough alone. It keeps falling apart and re-assembling itself: live drums, horns, radio stingers, wrong-foot drops, and solos that shouldn’t exist in a dance track but absolutely do. Imagine a block-party tape being chewed by the machine and you’re still dancing anyway.

The Young Punx are back in full mischief mode: funk, house, and satire rolled into one fat groove. This isn’t a single, it’s a flare in the sky to say the new album is coming.

Mahna Mahna (Lounge Club Extended Mix)

Mahna Mahna! The Young Punx close out 2025 with a left field curveball that somehow turned into a fully playable dance record.

What began as a studio joke, sparked by the wonderfully oddball classic Mahna Mahna (originally written for a 60s blue movie soundtrack before becoming a global earworm on the Muppet Show), has now taken on a life of its own. 

In true Young Punx fashion the session started as a bit of mischief and quickly drifted into that familiar space where you are not entirely sure whether they are being serious or not. Then it settled into a surprisingly classy groove.

The result is a jazzy latin beach house take on Mahna Mahna. Sunlit chords, a rolling rhythm section, live feeling instrumentation and just enough of that unmistakable hook to make people grin at cocktail bars, pool parties and holiday season dancefloors. Equal parts playful and properly DJ friendly.

This release marks a final wink to 2025 as The Young Punx prepare to launch their fifth studio album WPUNX in 2026. The album will be a full scale original concept project set inside the world of a rogue desert radio station broadcasting wild genre collisions into the post-apocalyptic wasteland. Before that arrives, here is one last moment of dance floor fun.


Back in 2003 this was the first track we cut to vinyl. The second Matrix movie was coming, and we sampled the trailer from it, pressed it on white label and had it in the stores the day the movie came out. Annie Nightingale played it on Radio One and it was voted bootleg mix of the year by Radio One Listeners. It's the first time i ever heard my own music playing in public, our of a record player mounted in the trunk of a car parked outside a club on Old Street! Anyway. Here it is now.

The Matrix Rebooted

Marking the return of The Young Punx after a two year hiatus, Hal Ritson has teamed up with fellow producer, Thomas Gandey AKA Cagedbaby for Loving You Baby.

Featuring the immaculate vintage soul vocals of DTale, Loving You Baby delivers a declaration of summer haze and heady nights with a fresh and timeless groove that echoes both the pace of underground house, and the atmosphere of Motown and northern soul. 

Having previously provided lead vocals for hits by Sub Focus, Sigma, Philip George and The Chemical Brothers, DTale’s talents are the perfect complement to the track’s restrained uber-cool vibe. 

Since the release of 2014 album All These Things Are Gone, The Young Punx’ Hal Ritson has busied himself co-writing and co-producing behind the scenes for the likes of Duke Dumont, Sigma, Cassius, Flux Pavillion and Katy Perry. 

Gandey’s Cagedbaby project has released numerous singles and an album on Norman Cook’s Southern Fried label. As Thomas Gandey he has released many respected club tracks on labels such as Get Physical, Crosstown Rebels, Suara and OFF. The track is mixed by Grammy award winning mix engineer Wez Clarke.

The Young Punx and Thomas Gandey first met in a Karoake bar in Osaka in 2009 where Gandey managed to kill their laptop by filling it with glitter. They have remained good friends ever since and sometimes release punk records together under a secret alias.

What would happen if you combined Cream’s 'I Feel Free' with the production sound of Donna Summer’s 'I Feel Love' to make 'I Feel Free Love'? This is the kind of ridiculous question that only The Young Punx would ask, but fortunately the answer turns out to be something wonderful.

Lovingly assembled on 100% analog and vintage equipment, with no computer plugins in sight, I Feel Free is a psychedelic Italo-disco mashup trifle guaranteed to bring a smile to the dancefloor. And who knew that the original lyrics (from 1966) could sound so club relevant today?

The Young Punx is the long running eclectic mashup electronic side project of multi-grammy multi-platinum record producer Hal Ritson, who has worked on about 1000 records you have actually heard of. After a couple of years setting up his new Soul and Disco project The Tribe Of Good (now signed to Ultra Records on a 3 album deal) Hal is back on Young Punx duties in his rare spare time with one new track per month scheduled for the foreseeable future!

One Point Five is a "kind of album" The Young Punx released in between their first and second albums - hence the name. Then it went back to Japan again and Shinichi Osawa made it totally mental electro. Its taken me a while to warm to this mix as it is fairly hardcore at times, but now I really enjoy playing it.
