‘Gone Too Long’ from rising duo Him_Self_Her is a bonafide bomb - house with feeling and a massive bassline and killer vocal from Kieran Fowkes. Reinvigorated by Crosstown Rebels for a re-release after it came out on Mexican label Cream Couture last year, this time the infectious original comes backed with remixes from Belgian hero Compuphonic, who injects more bounce, bleeps and emotive melody and the mighty Yousef who’s darker ‘Circus Rework’ is a deep affair of rolling drums and dubby textures.

Dynamic duo Him_Self_Her is the astute combination of Claire and Leon who came together after honing individual skills for many years on their local scene in Leicester. All that it took was one studio session to realise the potency of their union and their genre blending productions are showing no bounds - ranging from deep grooves to disco infused techno. ‘Gone Too Long’ was originally released in 2012 and championed by Pete Tong (Essential New Tune) and supported by the likes of Jamie Jones. Damian Lazarus has now signed the duo and along with this re-release there is more to come on the label and the duo also have their debut album in the works.

One of the youngest DJs on the Belgian DJ circuit, Maxime Firket aka Compuphonic broke onto the international scene with a release on Tiga’s Turbo Recordings. Further releases have dropped on highly acclaimed labels including Modular, Darkroom Dubs, Systematic Recordings, 2020 Vision and Parquet Recordings.

Yousef is a mainstay of UK house music. With a career spanning over ten years, the heavyweight DJ / Producer and Promoter founded Circus Recordings and events and has appeared on some of the most revered and respected labels in the business - Carl Cox’s Intec, Nick Curly’s Cecille, Saved and of course Sven Vath’s Cocoon Recordings - which released ‘Come Home’, Yousef’s stunning Piece de Resistance.

This was my first of over 10 Essential Mixes I’ve done, as always recorded live in one take, as was then on 3 vinyl decks. I was a super sub presenter on BBC Radio 1 at the time too, standing in for peak time Friday and Saturday (Pete Tong, Danny Rampling, Seb Fontaine) breaking a newer sound to the UK mixed with my raw house music sentiment, something that’s never left me. Even now with a more modern DJ set up I still play the same, raw, funk, loopy, tough, colourful and soulful in its own way, this was a real defining moment for me, enjoy…

A throw back to the first time I hosted a live essential mix during my time as a new presenter on my first time doing any radio, which happened to be Radio One!

This was my 3rd essential mix (I’ve done 10 or 11 I think…) 

It captures the craziness of peak back to basics, and the west sound Id championed and helped orchestrated into the UK…

Following an unannounced appearance at Ambers in Manchester, Yousef premiered his new track Loving is Living to a capacity crowd. The room's energy spoke volumes. Within hours, Yousef made the call: this would be the first single from his upcoming and final album, I Operate in Purple.

Crafted for the dancefloor, Loving is Living is a joyful, melodic trip through house music's rich emotional spectrum. It opens with a nod to Frankie Knuckles, echoes the spirit of BT, and lands squarely in the world of Yousef—an artist who has given his adult life to the genre.

The track features Brighton duo Kuuda, to deliver an instant peak-time moment. Kuuda appears on two songs across the album, bringing a rich, euphoric layer to Yousef's sound.

I Operate in Purple is Yousef's fifth and final album. It's also his most personal. A culmination of three decades immersed in house music culture, it maps the inspirations, cities, and club nights that shaped him. Unlike previous records, this album fully leans into original songs, live vocalists, and musicianship. A celebration of where house music has been, and where it's going.

its one of my favourite ever mixes and its legacy and impact to the UK house scene was enormous. 

Its raw and recorded live in one take on 3 technics decks, 

I created loops using 2 copies of tracks layered over the 3rd track playing, as well as double beating to crescendos.

this was made pre efx on mixers, proper house music personified! 

I broke many of these names and tracks into the UK for the first time
via this mix, 

Big up Julian Rolf and mixmag for the support. 

The interview that went with this issue is so ridiculous, its almost unprintable! I was called on my phone from gig to gig to after party to after party for over 24hrs... the interview started serious and ended anything but, good times!
