I walk through my garden nearly everyday and I've never heard this before.  
It must have been perfect timing for me to be in the garden and for the natural conditions to be in sync.

As I walked through our garden I heard a crackling popping sound.  It must require exact conditions of temperate, barometric pressure and humidity to occur.

The pods were popping open and the seeds were ejected, sometimes meters away.

I don't yet know what kind of weed this is.
