SUNANDBASS Podcast #21 - Tokyo Prose

As a prelude to the upcoming Soul:ution Room Two takeover on Friday 16th May, label boss Marcus Intalex and one of Manchester’s most reliable renegade emcees, DRS, have bumped consciousness and put together this, their ‘Mid Mic Crisis’ mix. Regular sparring partners in clubs the world over, DRS’ trademark measured Mancuian flow rides perfectly atop on Intalex’s soulful selection with his baritone delivery sitting sweetly and filling out the dynamic range of the rolling selections which reportedly feature, in some form, material from DRS’ forthcoming second album, Mid Mic Crisis.

Basically it’s a glorious and specifically tailored 62 minute mixtape showcase of DRS’ potency as a host, an emcee and a vocalist. But it comes mixed by Intalex which more than hints at the level of quality it contains... two of Manchester's finest in sterling form.

Aqua Memphis

Tuesday night at Sun and Bass and I messaged Phil Tangent to ask if he wanted to get some food together. His reply: "Can't mate - just found out I'm playing first set tonight. Fancy going b2b?"
Ambra Night is my favourite club in the whole world. Of course I wanted to play the set! 

So it turns out that our first set as Philth Tangent happened at Sun and Bass. What a way to kick things off. But when we got to the Ambra Night 'Garden Stage' it was already starting to rain, and the sound engineers were taping plastic sheets to the table above the decks! It was pretty mad playing at the beginning of a storm. They actually had to close the stage 15 minutes after we finished. The engineers were covering the decks with the sheets as much as possible, which is pretty confusing when you're playing b2b on 3 decks. At one point the engineer had to wipe the rainwater off one of the decks - but it was still playing. Have a listen and see if you can spot it.

I've wanted to play at Ambra Night for years, and we were both really happy it was at Bailey's night, a man who has supported us both massively as we have built our careers. Big thanks to all of you guys who danced in torrential rain to watch our debut Philth Tangent set - the first of many!

Continuing our series of ‘all artist’ mixes, we give you Back To The Future #52 - Calibre, The Remixes. 

This is the ICON Series.

Following the success of our Ivy Lab and Rufige Kru mixes we decided to look at another one of our inspirations.  A foundation artist with tracks in most people’s record collections, respected and admired around the world.  

Over the years we have listened to and enjoyed a fair few 'all Calibre’ mixes from other DJs, such has been his impact on the scene.  

Throughout his colossal career, he has remixed a vast and varied array of artists and labels, always putting his unique, soulful and rolling Signature (!) on them.  For this mix we've decided to focus on these remixes...  Researching his discography, we found that we had collected a huge amount of his music over the years.  After some negotiation, we managed to shortlist it to these 22.

So where did we end up? An hour and ten minutes worth of lovely music, perfect for the car or... well anywhere really.  

We hope that we have done him justice and that the mixing has matched his music and its quality, better than that… his Calibre.
