Live MFA Beatbox/Freestyle Rap Sesh 27/01/16

I had a fantastic class this semester at school called "Sound Synthesis" where we learned the history of the electronic creation of sound as well as a smattering of relevant musical theory as well as tips and tricks for actually producing sound electronically ourselves!

For this project, everyone made two tiny snippets of sound that just had to be unrecognizable from their source, and then we were given the bank of the entire class' sounds and tasked with making a song using NOTHING BUT THOSE SOUNDS. This is my project :)

Final Project Artist’s Statement: Digital Auto-Erotic Asphyxiation

Goals

This sonic exploration of the sounds that surround us had two goals: firstly, to create a feeling of drowning under a thick layer of technological noise that gets more and more oppressive to the point of the near-exhaustion of digital sound limitations, then secondly to break the listener free from that feeling and deliver them into a place of beauty and digital magic. Both of these goals were meant to be achieved without using any elements except for sonic objects that I myself recorded so as to make this project completely in the style of musique concrète. Therefore, I borrowed a Zoom recorder, sampled technological noises at my work, on the TTC, and in my room and then manipulated and arranged those sounds in Ableton Live.

Conclusion

In summary, my piece of musique concrète uses the ideas of schizophonia, the effects of sound on human beings, and the democratization of music to make a point about society. It is titled Digital Auto-Erotic Asphyxiation because I believe that is what we as a species are doing to ourselves: cutting off our source of life and health in what could prove to be a permanent and fatal way just to play in the dreams and the feelings provided by the strong arms of our digital lover. The the tech itself is not sentient, yet, and so we only have ourselves to blame which forms the dark auto/automatic pun in the title. Technology is our robotic dominatrix and we happily submit to the abuse we ask of it for the sensations that this suffocation provides. I don't mean to sound arrogant, for I also love the beauty I can make in Ableton Live or even a simple photo editing app on my phone, but it cannot be argued that our lust for technological ease and entertainment is slowly choking the planet to death and drowning us all in noise as we exist among the bleeps, the bloops, and the buzzing.

-the intercom at work, specifically, the sound of someone successfully exiting the parking lot as heard from mostly inside the machine and then played through our terrible speakers

-The heater at work

-The screeching of a subway ride

-The hissing of a kneeling bus

-The bass rumble of a bus engine/driving sounds when sitting at the back

-the dehumidifier in my basement, both turning it on and the hum it makes

-my external hard drive booting up

-the sound of flipping the on switch of my midi keyboard, the sound that the midi keys make

-the sound of the fan in my room starting up and stopping

-the sound made by all the keys on my alarm, as well as the alarm going off and me snoozing it

-the sound of my phone vibrating on a flat surface when I receive a text

-the sound of my fridge and freezer being opened and closed

-the sound of my toaster/convection oven’s buttons, it powering on

-the sound of turning a burner on and off on the stove
