Solid Steel (20th June) Fanu is our guest in Hour 1, an electronic music artist and DJ from Finland, who has been releasing music for many years, plus remix duties that include Bill Laswell and our own Amon Tobin. In his own words:
"In addition to making/pushing/DJing broken beat music and running my label, Lightless, I've been working on loads of hip hop in the past 1.5 years, some of which will start to surface soon on Redefinition Records under my FatGyver alias. Hence, instead of going all electronic with the mix like I most often do, this time I wanted to go for the theme, "hip hop to D&B and back". Hip hop and drum and bass used to have a lot in common, after all, and their aesthetics can be very similar."

Solid Steel in association with Serato (23rd October) In Hour 2 it's a 'DJ Madd Re-Influenced mix' where the Hungarian artist drops a special mix looking back and deconstructing music he loved growing up. He told us;
"I had the idea to make an influences mix for some time but I wanted it to be a bit more special than a collection of tracks I listened to growing up. I came up with the idea to load the tracks into the software I write music in, and treating it as one long project the same way i write music: Adding and removing parts, leaving tracks playing or totally re-writing them. The selection had to be started with one of my earliest memories of music which was Paul Simon’s Graceland album which my mother used to listen to all the time. That definitely turned me onto african influenced music with the reggae and dub influences such as Bob Marley or The Specials soon to follow. As a teenager I was really into oldschool hip-hop and after I found out there is this crazy genre called jungle that uses sped-up hip-hop beats I was instantly hooked. I religiously followed early Bristol jungle and d&b, poking around old trip-hop, and discovering ragga-jungle through Congo Natty, where all these influences from dub / fast breaks and ragga vocals seem to come together. To this day these versions can only be heard in this mix and to keep it special, I think it will remain that way."

Solid Steel (25th November) Jon More and Matt Black - aka Coldcut - are back on vinyl and back on Solid Steel celebrating the release of their new  EP 'Only Heaven' released on Ahead Of Our Time, the label name Matt and Jon chose for their first records. The EP features Roots Manuva and Roses Gabor and producer Dave Taylor (Switch / With You.) Their mix is heavy on the reggae featuring music from Max Romeo, International Observer, Dillinger, The Upsetters, Big Youth, alongside Congo Natty, Bjork and the title track from their new EP.

In Hour 2 we welcome clocolan, an artist originally from South Africa who has a new release 'Nothing Left To Abandon' out on Enpeg. It's a beautiful album in a similar vein to Boards of Canada as you can hear in the two tracks featured in his mix. He told us;
"I’ve always held a fascination with the connective material I hear between different works of music by different artists from different cultures and eras. A phrase from a plainchant; a drumming pattern from North Africa; a motif from an analog synthesizer. I was mindful of this during the production of my album; that what we say never changes, only how we say it. Vangelis once said that music is vast. This is true. But what music conveys is, I think, simple and uncomplicated."

Planet Mu Recording artist, Gobstopper label boss, Boxed club night founder Mr.Mitch 
provides the third PRESSURE release of 2019. This strictly limited, blue and yellow splattered 
vinyl platter is futurist dancehall at its most exhilaratingly demented. 

Random synth patterns, chaotic bleep emissions and all round oscillating madness ensures this furiously fresh track, flows freakily, like a bogle frenzied droid transmitting from Kingston, Jamaica, 
year 2049.

Kevin Martin aka The Bug, nagged Mitch into submission, to release this Acid Ragga killer, after the PRESSURE label CEO, heard ‘Not Modular’ standing out clearly from Mitch’s gobsmacking one hour ‘Techno Dancehall Mix’ at the end of 2018. 

And as a tribute to South East London don dada Mitch, The Bug himself decided to slice, splice and dice ’Not Modular’ into two additional atomised remixes. The Bug’s  ‘Straight’ remix, is sub aquatic bashment, pulsating deeply from the bottom of the ocean, buried in a blizzard of white noise and disembodied, hypnotic chimes, with panic sirens set to stun. Whilst the ‘Raw remix’ is no less disorientating and funky, sounding like Lenky’s classic ‘Diwali’ riddim rewritten by an 808 clap addict, with hips set to full rotation. Conclusively alien and ridiculously infectious.
