For Needs 009 we welcome another all-star lineup of producers, established and emerging, from around the world. Featuring room 1 ready techno from one of the scenes leading lights Saoirse; a bass heavy, electro-tech weapon from Melbourne's Pugilist; the cosmic electro baselines of the irrepressible Reptant; an otherworldly space excursion courtesy of Norway’s finest Sansibar; dancehall inflected acid trance from London-based up and comer LUXE; and to round things off some twisted breaky tech-house from Egypt’s latest export Hassan Abou Alam.

THE PROBLEM
With 4.3m vinyl sales in the UK last year (the 12th consecutive year of growth), it’s clear that vinyl is back in a BIG way. But the basic technological principles of record pressing have not changed for a century. While the vinyl boom has been a bright spot for physical media lovers and the record industry alike, pressing vinyl poses a more urgent environmental concern than it did in the format’s heyday. At times, the process can seem almost antithetical to green living. Records are made of PVC, which comes from refined oil and can take up to 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill. Traditional pressing machines are powered by steam boilers that require fossil fuels to generate heat and pressure; the water used is treated with anti-corrosive chemicals in order to prevent rusting, thus creating more wastewater. And that’s just the pressing procedure.

Consider, then, vinyl’s packaging and distribution. The ink that’s used to print cover art and liner notes is traditionally solvent-based, meaning it contains volatile organic compounds that can contribute to the production of ozone. Once the record is encased in a beautiful jacket, it’s then shrink-wrapped in plastic wrap before boarding a gas-burning, carbon-emitting truck to ship. Suddenly the choice to buy physical music shifts from an action that helps sustain an artist’s career, to one that potentially threatens broader sustainability.

THE SOLUTION
In 2019 Needs started conversations with Green Vinyl, a brand new pressing plant based in Holland, who have devised a revolutionary production method which uses injection moulding rather than steam energy, equalling 60% less energy cost than the traditional vinyl production. It also uses no PVC and is a 100% recyclable product, meaning you can dispose of it in your home recycling bin.

The other benefits are that the record sounds better (it has a wider frequency spectrum), it cannot warp, and it also has a longer play life.

The key features of a Green Vinyl produced record are:

B3. Hassan Abou Alam - Cluttered (Needs 009)

Having debuted on the label in 2020, Butter Sessions welcomes Naarm/Melbourne collective Polito back for their second full EP. A live techno four-piece comprised of producers Robert Downie and Finnian Langham with dancers Arabella Frahn-Starkie and Hillary Goldsmith, Polito describe themselves as "a meeting of improvised contemporary dance and live improvised techno music, working together to create entrancing performance experiences". In a live setting the stripped down machine rhythms and physical manifestations combine for a modern twist on the producer/dancer combination of rave's early days.

The Anticipate EP takes its name from the final track's Kafka-inspired vocals, capturing how Polito present the energy of those live performances through four tracks of techno with a stealthy intensity, seemingly about to ignite at any moment. As for the tracks themselves, each are best described in Robert's own words:

"QFHB was recorded using a eurorack modular system, TR8-S, OP-1, and features my voice ruptured into caveman vocals. The name is pretty self-explanatory. It's a big beat!

"'Costume Change' was recorded using a eurorack modular system, TR8-S and Reaktor. The name is a reference to the magical smoke and mirrors imagery that comes to mind when listening to this track. Like there's something cunning going on behind the scenes. We are distracting you with a raised eyebrow while we load up our next trick...

"'Journey Worm' comes at you hard right out of the gate. We always have to put a chugger on our releases. This track was recorded using a Moog Grandmother, TR8-S and a eurorack modular system. We wanted to make this one sound super springy and rubbery, like a thick alien worm ripping through a cross-dimensional portal.

"'Hug Yourself' was recorded using a eurorack modular system, TR8-S, Korg Arp Odyssey, and features vocals from Finn and me. The text in the middle comes from Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis, heavily edited to make it sound more abstract and textural. It has quite a theatrical quality, with a lot of characters here fighting for your attention. While the curtains are slowly closing on the stage, they're pushing one another out of the way to get one last moment in the spotlight.

"The name is simply a suggestion to bring yourself back to your body in a time of need, and dancing to a beat is the perfect way to get you there. It’s like the world is collapsing in the song but maybe all you need is already within you. You can always hug yourself."

Listen to this new track by hitter ALPHONSE, who is a steady source for breakin bangers and distinctive production for years now. With STILL EYE he is part of an excellent compilation curated by Bristol based producer REMOTIF. On his own label FAMILIAR STRANGERS he is releasing that pack of very dope tracks with the aim of raising funds for the International Rescue Committee (IRC).

IRC is currently assisting with emergency resettlement for Afghan refugees. Afghanistan is the single country most at risk of deteriorating humanitarian crises in 2022, and 100% of the profits from this release will provide uprooted families with tents, clean water, sanitation and other basic necessities.

After a 2 year hiatus, Silver Dollar Club returns to round out a trilogy of EPs with a sparkling slab of weirdo tearjerkers and club-ready cuts from Bristol's own Remotif. 

With a healthy lineup of releases on Coymix, Air Miles, and his own  label Familiar Strangers, it's been a busy year for Joe Reddick and for good reason: Prolific and versatile, he combines a classic club sensibility with an exploratory approach to space and texture that results in a sound all his own.

The Space Between Us return in 2020 with the second instalment of their local artists compilations, entitled "Hybrida" - named after the first flower to bloom in outer space.

All artists on the release are Brisbane-based, and the 8-track release spans a range of sounds - showing a cross section of the city's exciting musical fabric.

Opener, "Europa" is a bright bubbly fusion of breakbeat and electro synth-pop, followed by downtempo breaks (and Australiana vibes) of "Acid Walk Through Minyon Falls".

"Proto Psy Werkout" is high energy trance-infused techno fit for a heaving dancefloor, as is the highly percussive "Spring Inevitably Turns To Fall".

Trippy, dubbed out breaks feature in "When I'm Gone (Break Mix)", while "Transport" is a trip hop journey with a hypnotic acid line throughout.

"Marvie" explores a darker energy with more experimental arrangement, while "AREA 1" takes the listener to a feeling of weightlessness, as if floating through the stratosphere.

@kaspermarott will release his debut album ‘Full Circle’ in January on his own Axces Recordings imprint. The album features 11 tracks that explore different genres and moods, while remaining within Kasper’s colourful universe.

Full Circle demonstrates Kasper’s ability to play with layers and structure. The tracks are built from complex layered harmonies, looped melodies and different rhythmic textures. Escape Earth, aka BufoBufo and Corporeal Face, return to their own Ritual Poison label for another four-tracker of interplanetary yearning.

Opener ‘Dropping With The Force’ draws a line from Britcore to techstep intersecting at 130 breaks, acid bubbling through rowdy stabs, UK rap and rolling bass. ‘Solar Storm’ then pulses with its huge, dubby low-end, pounding drums encasing an inner core of swirling melodic elements.

On the flip, ‘Blasting Rocks’ heads to headier realms, though only just, breakbeats colliding like space debris, the alternating moods orbiting a raw Reese. ‘Universe Dub’ then closes out, a 140 stepper where dubbed out chords and restless bass meet chopped breaks and a ghostly vocal echoing through eternity.
