In very loose terms, James K's (@jamesk_1) music operates at the fringes of the pop world. It is experimental and industrial, packed with hooks and riddled with dreamy textures that show off her mastery of synths. She has released it in album form with Dial and Incenso, dropped EPs on AD 93 and collaborated with the likes of Drew McDowall and Stefan Maie, and always manages to imbue her adventurous arrangements with real-world emotions and anxieties. This year she will join us at Dekmantel Festival but not before serving up this week's podcast.

It's the sort of rhythmically thrilling workout that has always stood James apart: jittery drum patterns and kinetic grooves that unfold at 100 miles an hour as a barrage of caustic motifs, hypnagogic melodies and hyper-real colours all bounce about the mix. There is an ever-present sense of tension in the way things are assembled - it's as if they might implode or explode at any minute, and it all sounds fantastically futuristic.

Significant Other unveils a new project: Pain Management. A new imprint presenting music and visual media across a variety of formats. The outlet launches with an original 4 track EP: When It Rains.

Christening the label with his first full length release since 2021, the producer steps out from behind the curtain with a batch of tracks guaranteed to soothe psychic woes and challenge sound systems alike.

True to the name of the label, this debut release delivers a healthy dose of leftfield club weight. Tough and tender in equal measure, it’s a record that explores in-between zones. A fever dream of narrative experiments at the outer edges of club music, packing enough punch to shake a dancefloor, but enough delicacy to soundtrack the ride home. The final product is a meeting of outsider sonics and sleazy dance tropes, body music for restless minds.

Side A kicks in with Nocturne, the EP’s leading track that guides the listener into a veil of mystery with its enigmatic melody and its pulsating basslines that gradually build intensity while maintaining an underlying sense of tranquillity.
Hexosphere’s rhythm is edgy and straightforward with a trippy nature.

There’s an ever-evolving dynamic throughout the four tracks, alternating between driving rhythms and moments of serene psychedelia - evoking a feeling of introspection and exploring the duality of light and dark.

The B-side takes off with Corridor, an oscillating tension-builder.
Corridor’s distorted synths and glitchy effects cascade over pounding drums, creating a chaotic yet mesmerising soundscape.
Telepathic Climax weaves in and out with shimmering, harmonic and alluring shifts that add depth and dimension to the track.
Atmospheric and trippy textures create a sense of space and immersion throughout the journey of the EP - with illuminating elements piercing through the darkness.

We don’t really have a regular cadence or release schedule for the mix series, but when we release something, you can trust it will be special. That being said, very excited to share the second transmission in the Dance Data mix series, courtesy of SØMA. 

After hearing her play last year while in CDMX, I knew I wanted to get a recording from her. And as promised, it delivers on all fronts. Thank you @soma__mx

SØMA is the co-founder of tinyraves, a party from Guadalajara, México. Don’t be fooled by the name though, theyve booked international names such as NVST, Skee Mask, Sister Zo, Siu Mata and Amor Satyr.

DJ RAT - Corridor

We are incredibly excited and grateful to present 'NOCTURNO' - the first proper LP release by Chilean producer, Masot. The 10 tracks effortlessly traverse multiple genres throughout the album arc, showcasing a highly detailed and carefully designed sound palette - one which remains remarkably intact throughout the whole journey.

Moments of Nocturno feel melancholy and pensive, but never void of the hypnotic and percussive 2-step rhythms that feel like a darker take on the historically upbeat sound of UK 2-step and Garage.

Each song is meticulous, but not over-indulgent. The intricacy, melodic elements and club utility allow the LP to be as functional for the club as it is for at home listening.

Masot - Nocturno LP (DDD003)

Hailing from Bandung, the capital of the West Java province of Indonesia, Diannov Pamungkas emerged on to the scene under the alias of Xin Lie when he started hosting radio broadcasts alongside the local DJ collective C*SSS. He started djing in the hardcore punk scene that shaped his youth but it was his earlier childhood experiences that drew him to the traditional Sundanese performing arts Réak and Kuda Renggong. 

Kuda Renggong * (Eng. Renggong Horse), which is commonly practiced in the Sumedang Regency, is a procession of horses that are trained to dance dressed in colorful costumes, while being accompanied by a live band. 

Réak * is a community-based festive music performance from the Priangan area of West Java, organized during life-cycle celebrations ("hajatans") such as weddings, institutional anniversaries or occasionally city folk festivals. At the present time it is primarily held during weddings and circumcisions. 

Inspired by these Sundanese traditions, Diannov recorded the mesmerizing sounds of the Dogdog - a long tubular single-headed leather drum. He incorporated the recordings in his own unique style of percussive electronic music, which is infused with elements from the vibrant contemporary club culture. 

Xin Lie’s will release his debut album (co-produced by Tesla Manaf, Kuntari) on January 27, 2025.

This mix was recorded at a C*SSS event on Bali, March 30th 2024. 
The sample at the start of the mix is an activist talking about evictions in Bandung.
