TECH110: MaxNRG - Now Hear This / Midnight Rider

From grimy trap to main-stage D&B, from delicate melodies to stupidly big basslines, from Ukraine to the UK, MaxNRG's got it covered. Since signing to Technique he's demonstrated a level of versatility that's meant each new release comes with the promise of some new twist in the bass-music tale. Listen to the horror-movie darkness of Danger Zone, the electro-acid road joint Dis Way We Gotta Do It and the proudly Eastern European Arkan, and you wouldn't even know it was the same mind at work.

So what's the story this time?

Now Hear This is straight wheel-up-and-come-again material. A percussive first thirty-two establishes a base level of tension, before a textbook breakdown and build combo ramps it even further. Then a monster drop, made of battling percussive riffs and driving basslines supported by iron fist drums, provides the rave exactly what it's been waiting for. Then Max breaks it down to show he's still got more where that came from for the second drop. This is a mighty piece of dancefloor science and a party-hyping essential.

Then, of course, it's a different vibe for Midnight Rider. Paying homage to his roots, Max weaves balalaika samples into the rough-hewn bass and beats, giving this tune a uniquely haunting quality. This is soulful D&B done Ukrainian style, undeniably led by melody but without ever sacrificing raw dancefloor power. It's a track with a big-room, hands-in-the-air mentality, but delivered with the subtlety that a real instrument brings to the table.

With this release, MaxNRG has shown he's still got no interest in sticking to a formula. Constantly evolving and rewriting the rule-book as he goes, he's capable of reliably supplying the dancefloor with weighty bass and beats while still pushing genre-boundaries. Stay locked, because this journey has many more miles to go.

Yes, it really has been fifteen years since Future Tech (aka Drumsound & Bassline Smith) signalled the beginning of the Technique Recordings odyssey with their eponymous debut collaboration. Since then, the drum and bass sound has spread its tendrils from the dark corners of the underground into the limelight of mainstream appreciation. And Technique has been at the forefront of that evolution all the way. So, here's an LP to show the world exactly what a decade and a half among the top tier of D&B labels sounds like.

Label heads Drumsound & Bassline Smith take pole position, dropping straight into the drama of the Friction-supported “Spring Heel Jack”. Then comes another of Technique's most recognisable acts, Tantrum Desire with the low-down funk of “Shuffle”, followed by another Friction-favourite from the bossmen with “Sputnik”. The big names keep coming throughout the album, as Crissy Criss supplies the VIP of his monumental “Create the Future” and the mighty Digital goes dubbed-out with a remix of “Phantasm”. Plus Drumsound & Bassline Smith's alter-ego 2DB pass through with the highly-grimey “Terrahawk” and L Plus delivers two precision-engineered killers in the form of “Red Planet” and “Going Down”.

Flipping the script, Technique new boys Document One strike from two angles with the laid-back “Jazz Club” and the dirty dancefloor uppercut of “Body Like Wow”. TREi takes us to the big room with “Here & Now”, and the ever-individual MaxNRG shows off his ability to combine energy with melody on “Far Frontiers of Space”. Erb N Dub and Skope recruit Mr Dirty Smirks, MC SMK himself, to bring some typically hard bars to “Pull it Back”. Kronology does what it says on the tin with some “Razor Sharp” technoid-jungle vibes. And Aussie badman Spectrem brings some hands-in-the-air euphoria with “Say Goodbye” and then roughen things up with “The Future”. Infrasonik take the honour of completing the collection with “Bricks Breaking”. Stop The Panic

Arkan (Ukrainian: Aркан, Aрґан) is a popular dance of the Ukrainian Hutsul people (from Hutsulshchyna, southwestern Ukraine).

The Arkan is traditionally performed around a burning bonfire by the men. The word Arkan also refers to the step that the men perform while dancing around the fire. The step begins with the right foot stepping to the side (or double stamping as the dance builds momentum), the left foot crosses behind, the right foot steps to the side again, and the left foot is hopped in front of the dancer with a bent knee. The dance is performed with the men's arms upon one another's shoulders. In professional Ukrainian dances, however, many variations may accompany this root step.

PROMETHEUS EP -- MAXNRG

RELEASE DATE: 15th JULY 2012

The word "unique" gets bandied about a lot when new artists are being
promoted. MaxNRG, Technique's latest signing, however, deserves that
moniker. Representing Ukraine, he's been a pioneer of the drum and
bass scene in his homeland since the late nineties, and now label
bosses Drumsound and Bassline Smith have lit the fuse that's going to
blow up his reputation worldwide.

From the opening bars of the title track of this EP, "Prometheus",
you can tell there's something different about this producer. Sure,
it's got the dance-demolishing bass and beats that you would expect
from a Technique Recordings release, but it's MaxNRG's melodic sense
that really sets him apart. Twisting Eastern European musicality
around the drum and bass paradigm creates a style that you've really
never heard before.

Then, "Arkan" takes it up another notch, explicitly laying out the
blueprint to MaxNRG's approach. This is unmistakably the sound of
Ukrainian D&B. Traditional folk sounds organically blend into
razor-edge synth-work in a way you wouldn't have thought possible. The
combination of styles melds into a high-energy workout guaranteed to
become a rave anthem.

Next, just to show he's got more than one trick up his sleeve, Max
throws down "Metro 2033 VIP". This is a slice of technoid darkness
designed to show that he can do atmosphere and tension as well as
upbeat melody. Layers of floating pads and percussive sounds dissolve
into a skank-out drop to prove this producer has got all bases covered.

And while he's covering bases, the final track "Sunset of Empire"
covers two in one. He delivers a beautiful film-score panorama of an
intro, and then brutally switches and glitches things up with a
serrated bass-drop.

The "Prometheus EP" is just the beginning of MaxNRG's assault on the
world of D&B as part of the Technique Recordings crew. Any discerning
DJ who hears these tunes will want to be part of that assault too.
Ukranian D&B has planted its flag, and now it's here to stay.
