None other than Wordcolour up next for the pod, a crazily talented producer & DJ, big fans of his over here. His mix took us aback a bit too, perfectly weaved club mix, deep and spacey while still being really tough. Massivve thanks to Wordcolour, we also caught up with him for a lil chat! Read below >

AM: Yo Nick! What have you been up to recently? 

Wordcolour: Hey, thanks for having me! I've had a busy start to the year getting stuck into a few projects - a remix, a collab, doing music and sound design for my friend Andrea Khora's short film Bolus. After finishing a big upcoming project last year I've been having fun jumping around and doing a few different things with different people.

AM: How and where did you record the mix? Was there a theme or anything behind it? 

Wordcolour: The Mix was recorded at home on two XDJ 700s and a Xone 23. In terms of theme - I have this folder in my rekordbox which I call "dreamy - good if fucked" which is maybe pretty self-explanatory, but it tends to be full of lots of deep spacious things - dubstep, hip hop, ambient, other oddities. I think the inspiration for this folder came from a few years ago when I was at Atonal and me and a good pal went to see Lee Gamble at a point in the night when I was feeling pretty blissed out and fuzzy. I remember he was playing this quite up-tempo set but suddenly took it down to this really spacious half-time dubstep thing and I honestly felt like I could see all the reverb haha. I've been obsessed with trying to bring a little of this vibe into my sets since then, and this mix is me kind of weaving in and out of that stuff.

AM: We hear there’s an album on the horizon, tell us a bit about it and the process for it if you can? 

Wordcolour: Ah yeah! I probably can't say too much about it just yet but keep your eyes peeled later this month. It's a bit of a departure for me - I took the opportunity to explore a bit beyond the club music I've released so far, and revisit the more ambient/experimental territory of some of my earlier mixes (such as my Blowing Up The Workshop mix of a few years ago). I guess this record is an effort to unite these two halves of what I make which was a lot of fun to try and figure out. I think it's quite an unusual record, and I'm really keen to know what people make of it!

AM: You really do have a trademark playful & intricate sound/style in your production, has it always been like this since you started producing? 

Wordcolour: Oh thanks! I guess I came to club music a little bit later than a lot of other producers/DJs I know. For a long time I wrote other things - songs, bits of music for TV/theatre etc. I think maybe this informs what I make to some extent - I'm always really keen to pull in influences from outside of club music into what I do. I'm as influenced by Laurie Anderson, Steve Reich or Paul Lansky as I am by Objekt or Batu...

AM: What’s next for you in 2022? 

Wordcolour: I'm currently putting together a live-set which will explore the more ambient/experimental side of this new album. I only recently started using ableton and I've never done anything like this before, so this has been a really fun challenge and jumping off point for going deeper into some of those ideas. I'm also looking forward to doing a lot more as a DJ - I love playing so much! And I feel like I've really found my feet with DJing in the last year.

Lee Gamble creates genre-agnostic music, incorporating dub, garage, and jungle, bleeding into grindcore metal and machine-strength techno. LCY was born and bred in Bristol, soaking up the city's rich soundsystem culture, which still plays a crucial part in their music. 3024: Please describe the mix in a single sentence ?

EHUA:  "This mix is dark contrasts, bursts of sunlight and rhythmic complexities all the way, it explores the entire emotional spectrum."

3024: What DJ inspires you at the moment / has inspired you throughout the years and why?

EHUA: "Flore’s DJ sets are some of the best sets I’ve seen in recent times. The skills and the selection are always next level. But through the years I’ve been inspired by so many incredible DJs from so many different scenes - from minimal techno, to dubstep, drum and bass, jungle - my inspirations are countless."

3024: What are you working on / what have you got forthcoming?

EHUA: "At the moment I’m working on a bunch of projects in between touring and I have a few tracks coming out in the next months. I’m also exploring lots of new sound directions, I’m going through a phase where I constantly have a lot ideas and I excitedly and disorderly jump from one to the other. It’s fun though, it feels good."

3024 TAPES 002: Ehua

Hassan Abou Alam is one of Egypt’s musical exports, steadily publishing his work since 2008 and he’s here to take over Tapes #90.

He has been featured on diverse labels across the globe such as Banoffee Pies, Rhythm Section, naive, Casa Voyager, and many more! For the past 15 years, Hassan has been playing around with his gear, forging multiple live performances. A hard to pin down sound that utilizes analog and digital instruments, a form of organized chaos that he portrays with extreme finesse—his Boiler Room set is a testament to his genre-bending capabilities. Through Red Bull’s RBMA Abou Alam was given a chance to mingle musically with the ancient people of Luxor. The result? A phenomenal live performance in Cairo fusing traditional folklore with electronica, successfully pinning him as one of Egypt’s most versatile musicians.
