Yo! 
Fiyahdred up next for the pod, after a superb debut EP on the bad boy Hyperdub, we're huge fans of their sound and not to mention the previous Bamz releases so we're buzzed to be having them on the pod. For the mix they've served up just under an hour of straight vibes, with uk funky, amapiano, afro and soulful bits floated throughout, it's wicked.

AM: Yo Bam! What you been up to recently?

Yo! I can't lie, the days feel like they're rolling into one, so sometimes I be forgetting what I'm doing lmao. But recently, I've been gigging, I've been making music for a few labels, enjoying the success of the Anyway EP and just been trying to establish a new routine/workflow when it comes to making content and being consistent with it. Plotting everyday, you know?!

AM: How and where did you record the mix? Was there a theme or anything behind it?

After many failed attempts due to technical difficulties, I did end up recording the mix at home on my brand new Pioneer XDJ-XZ controller. Initially, I didn't have a theme for the mix when I did the earlier attempts, but after the same conversation of UK Funky being dead made it to social media again, I made sure that this mix included the amazing, high quality and abundant UK Funky tunes that are being churned out by some very wavy music creators.

AM: We loved the debut Fiyahdred on HD, was the EP a long time in the works? What was the process for it?

Thank you so much - I'm glad you enjoyed Anyway EP! The lead single 'Anyway (Do It)' was made some time in 2020 - I was just having fun with it because at that time, I had difficulties being connected with music and feeling passionate about it. I sent the tune to Scratchclart and he said it was sick, then sometime in 2021 he circled back around and basically said 'nah it's sick, do something with it. I'm sending it to Kode9.' Fast forward, Kode9 & myself confirm going ahead with the EP, then the following months I got to work on the rest of the tracks. I was feeling so recharged and excited to get new music out, the vibes came easily to me and I was pleasantly surprised that the tracks were wrapped up in a few months, as I typically take a while to finish tracks because I'm either overthinking it or I'm somewhat doubting my abilities. Dealing with the Hyperdub team has been a wonderful, easy going experience - can't wait to do it again!

AM: Touching on Fiyahdred again, what was the inspiration for the switch?

I feel like I had outgrown 'Bamz' and I was in need of a somewhat drastic change in order for me to propel further ahead with my music. As well as that, there were a few artists locally and globally that had similar names so I wanted to stand out! Lastly but equally important, the name makes me feel connected to my Caribbean heritage, which for a long time, I actually felt disconnect from due to a handful of reasons. I have big dreams, many creative ideas, I felt like I couldn't have projected them if I didn't make that change. I know on the surface it's just a name change, but for some reason it give me a new energy, new essence, new excitement, new sense of self and I am enjoying the creative journey again. I'm looking forward to seeing where Fiyahdred can go!

AM: What’s next for you in 2022?

2022 I'm just trying to smash it! Releasing music and collaborating with artists across the spectrum, upping the quality in everything I do, taking myself further than I've ever been and I hope to be presented with opportunities that wouldn't have crossed my mind. I feel like everything will align perfectly! Keep your eyes and ears peeled :)

AM: Ojo! What have you been up to recently?

Yooo fellas, been rather busy, spinning various plates of music/work/life and trying not to get overwhelmed by all the fun stuff going on and killer music constantly being released! 

AM: How and where did you record the mix? Was there a theme or anything behind it?

Recorded it at home on my gorgeous set-up, shout out to my housemate Jacob @ Simpliply (link below) for building the hottest DJ units going.  I played a mixture of records and digis. 

In terms of theme, I guess I just wanted to try and reflect the kinda stuff that you guys have been promoting and releasing with AM. So it’s full of pretty dubbed out selections, music that walks the line between heavy and light, eerie and comforting, smooth and abrasive. 

AM: you use certain external effects / pedals within your mixing (and this mix) - is this a new thing/used frequently? Do you feel it lets you express yourself more in your djing?

Yep just recently treated myself to a delay unit, after much deliberation I chose the Benidub Digital Echo (link below) which I think sounds ridiculously nice, is easy to use, and also is electronically designed to work with mixers and other gear, rather than just guitars. Big tip!

Definitely helps in a variety of ways, whether you just want a bit of hands on improvisation whilst playing an individual track, or especially when you wanna create an interesting or exciting transition between tracks. Just gotta be careful not to overdo it cos it is very very fun!

AM: You really do have a style within your production already, very intricate/delicate/dubbed - tell us a bit about it and also your set up?

Kind of you to say, I’m definitely getting closer to the kinda sound/feeling that I imagine, although there’s a long way to go still. I work mostly just in Ableton, using a mix of samples, soft synths, and fucked up FX plugins. My ‘process’ (if you can call it that) can probably best be described as chaotic. Need to work on that…

AM: What’s next for you in 2022? Gigs/releases/food/trips/anything

No gigs of my own on the horizon, although I am v much available for booking so promoters HMU ;~) I’m currently working on a couple of new releases, one which will be my debut EP, coming out on a really dope label, if/when I manage to get it finished…

Otherwise I’ll be doing plenty of music tourism round the UK, eating dank food everywhere I go, and gazing out the window of cross-country trains. Got a few festivals booked in, particularly looking forward to Meakusma in Belgium, looks like a lovely mix of fun and experimental sounds.

AM: Hey hey! What have you been up to recently? 

Hi, thank you very much for the invitation!
I am currently following a course on Permaculture. I am reading quite a few books about it while searching for a house in the countryside with a nice land where I could settle.
I wish to dedicate my time entirely to permaculture and art projects.

AM: The mix is really wicked, with unfolding  field recordings and experimental ambient bits throughout. Where and how did you record the mix? Any theme behind it too? 

I am glad you enjoyed it. I simply made the music selection on my computer, in Popi's company, our rabbit who was having a nap.
Behind the music selections, I tend to seek for introspection. I  aim at pushing the listeners towards unknown areas, sometimes filled with serenity, sometimes very extreme and anxious.
I like to mix music genres, from concrete music to noise music,  introducing a bit of club tracks while keeping an experimental spirit to the whole mix.
I avoid producing linear club mixes.
I enjoy polyrythms, breaks in rythms, silence and parasite sounds.
For sure, these are not made for being listened to at an after-work with colleagues but more at home, sitting on a comfortable chair, with your eyes closed.

AM: We absolutely love your latest release on tape, ‘Transmutation’. Can you tell us about the inspiration for the album, and the set up you use?

Once again, thank you!
Regarding the inspiration for the album, it's a bit like the music selections. I take inspiration from spiritism, occult rites, religion, voodoo, legends, mythology as well as from the oceanic realm.
The unknown and what lies beyond this life are the main sources of inspiration.
To create this album, I worked from field audio recordings, with my modular system and an electric guitar.

AM: Whats next for you?

A new release on my label KUMP is coming early June. A first album from Mert Seger which is a new project.

I am also working on new projects with our collective Meth.O.tapes. We have several sound installation projects, and A/V lives going on.

Finally, a new album with Warzou is on the way as part of our project Warzabart.

Yo! What you been up to recently?

Everything and nothing - making work for a show at Herrretics which opens 16th June & finishing off The Fertile Crescents album which comes out on solstice via Xquisite.

How and where did you record the mix? Was there any theme etc behind it?

I put it together on ableton whilst in bed with a fever. Thematically its just my ongoing sub narrative on conflict and catharsis.

Big fans of your own productions as well as TFC, what was the inspiration with the collaboration w/ oxhy?
O and I have been working together in different forms for a few years, they taught me how to use Ableton and we've worked on many side projects for each other too. The Fertile Crescent spiralled out of our mutual interest in the legacy of the non western part of the world and a desire to make the most awful music we were capable of laying claim to, we're not done yet.

Whats next for ya this year?
More of everything good please, working towards an EP for a label and trying to figure out financing films, but thats the long game i guess.

AM: Yo! What you been up to recently? 

You know… I’ve been chilling. Grilling with friends, watching the homies play out, just big group hangs when I’m not working. 

AM: How and where did you record the mix? Was there any theme etc behind it? 

I recorded this mix with a pioneer djm-450, two xdj-700s, and my iPhone using the pioneer djm recorder app to record it. That app rocks. I recorded this at my apartment in ridgewood during the day when I probably should’ve been working. I really love going from 90 down to 160… so many crazy tunes in that area. So I started off with some tracks I knew I wanted to play and then let Jesus take the wheel. 

AM: Tell us a bit about IYDE, you run it with a couple others ye? 

In Your Dirty Ears is a monthly newsletter I do with my close friends and former colleagues Amelia Holt and Sara Casella. We were always sending each other bandcamp links and Amelia had the idea to do a newsletter and we were deep in the pandemic and I was like okay why not. Selfishly It’s been really great because it makes me very regimented about checking the hundreds of bandcamp emails in my inbox. But it’s been really nice to hear that ppl enjoy it. Ultimately if ppl r buying music and supporting artists because they checked out the newsletter I’m happy. 

AM: Whats next for ya this year? 

Looking forward to some fun gigs this summer. this weekend gonna be playing fourth world (a showcase of local nyc djs and live acts) at knockdown center with Amelia and Sasha (deep creep). It’s been really really fun to mix with them. I love them. Also amelia and I are going to be in Europe the last half of august playing some shows. But I’m honestly just super hype to see Aba Shanti-I in London.

Known for producing ‘Intelligent frog music’, the Dublin based artist serves up a 40 min mix of Downtempo, ambient/experimental, folk, and hip hop.

AM: Hey hey! What you been up to recently?

Hello! I've recently relocated to a small town in the midlands of Ireland after spending three years in Portugal. Missing my pals back there but have been absolutely loving the cold weather and living outside of the city. Back in a proper routine of working on music for the first time in years, so finally gonna finish some projects I've been working on for a long time. Also spending a lot of time walking and cycling around. I got a new bike that's like a hybrid between a touring bike and bmx last week, it is truly the dream whip!
 
AM: How and where did you record the mix? Was there any theme etc behind it?

It's all over the place in terms of genre and mood, so I suppose the only theme is just that I really like all of the music in it. Unintentionally, about half of the music in it is made by friends actually, I have only copped that now. 

I spent a few days here just going through the stuff people had sent me, my youtube likes, recent Bandcamp purchases, etc, then just started putting it all together in a session, collage-style. I'll start with maybe 100 tracks and whittle it down. I think about fun/interesting transitions more than a linear trajectory. It probably doesn't sound like it to whoever is listening to it but I spend a pretty absurd amount of time arranging these things haha. I can only manage to make one or two per year. It would be amazing if I could apply this level of concentration to working on my own music.

AM: What have you got planned for 2023? 

Frog-wise, I've got an LP nearly done, which will be out on wherethetimegoes at some point next year. I've also got a single coming out on a great label based in NYC in January, but I'm not sure whether I can openly announce it yet. In any case, I'm excited about that. I have a couple of shows in the UK in Spring too.

Apart from that, around this time last year, a group of us who are loosely affiliated with wherethetimegoes got together for a week in Mayo in the West of Ireland and recorded lots of music over the course of a week. Seán Being has spent the year extracting an LP from the sessions and it's gonna be out soon. 

Life-wise I'm going to spend the next few years learning construction and carpentry with the hope that I can partially escape the laptop prison in the future. Dreaming of building a little house or studio somewhere heavenly. Time will tell.
