To my mind as a species we are at a crossroads, we can either continue to let the hatred in our hearts divide, pollute, and destroy the world, or we can see that our struggles are related, and so in helping one another, we take a small step towards a brighter future, where everyone knows how their needs are met and everyone is free to explore their passions. Chameleon

This is part one of a story about how the ideas from 1984 had been enacted in our world. Part 1 is from 1948-81. Technology and communist revolutions enabled the first stage of 1984 to arrive. The USA and the Soviet Union were the two lone global superpowers during this time. An iron curtain divided east and west between these two, where each country took a side, NATO or USSR. In the USA big brother was enacted through warrantless wiretapping, CIA spying and all the fear mongering around the red scare for a few examples. As for the USSR there was using the pretense of a worker revolution only to gain absolute power and run like dictators. Political dissidents were dragged to the gulags or worse, and they must swear party allegiance and rat out others who criticize the government. 
This era ends in 81 because the New Deal era of politics came to a close, the USSR while not gone yet, is hanging on the ropes, but we will save that for part 2.
