        Lost in the depths of space, AAKAARA takes listeners on a journey to the outer limits of the sonic universe with their latest album “Obsidian Promises”. Blending influences from punk and metal, EBM, architectural design and certain celestial objects, AAKAARA offers a fresh take on industrial techno. This body of work is dark and brooding, full of haunting and thought-provoking soundscapes. Metallic and cold one moment, blisteringly hot the next. Pounding drums create searing rhythms, acid-drenched synths weave abrasive textures, and noise permeates the stereo field.

        Inspired by the mysterious and alluring world of black holes, the producer explores the beauty of extremes through sound.

        "If you know my work or me," AAKAARA says, "it's no secret that I have a spiritual connection to, and an obsession with, black holes. It's not about doom and gloom, but about beautiful extremes: infinite calmness, ultra-high energy, being deeply centered, and inevitable attraction.”

        “I try to sonify this in a naive sense. It isn't an attempt at science; it's a way for me to practice a makeshift spirituality about these entities through craft and functional dance music for people."

        Spirituality and stellar inspiration were essential to AAKAARA's life during the three years they spent between Los Angeles and London, while writing this album. It provided a sonic home during a period of transition, when they didn't feel at home and didn't have access to a studio. Everything was made "in the box" using only Ableton 10. After collecting guitar pedals and amplifiers for years, AAKAARA has shifted away from a hardware-focused mindset and is now more invested in the conceptual framework, narrative, and cultural implications of their work.

        Visuals also play an integral role in this maximalist experience. The outer sleeve (front and back cover) conveys the “big ideas” visually, while the companion poster includes custom typography, detailed drawings, symbol design, and poetry. The poetry provides a textual counterpoint to the lyric-less music, written in parallel but later stages of the production process. The visual identity of this work is inseparable from the music, describing it in an integral way. It’s the other side of the coin, not simply an accompaniment.

        With its spiritual connection to the infinite and mysterious, “Obsidian Promises” harnesses the beauty and intensity of celestial entities as musical inspiration, transforming the science into mystical, narrative-driven sonic . MASS Sessions #366 | AAKAARA 
AAKAARA is a London-based producer, and visual artist working in mediums of screen printing, audiovisuals, and graphics.
His taste in music and production style has been described as “sounding like a defunct cargo train.” Weirdness & thoughtful toughness are core sonic principles for AAKAARA. All formats of his work (visual, sonic) are conceptually focused on black hole dynamics, asemic writing, detritus, & distortion. 

He has released music on Silva Electronics, Degenerate Matter (2019), and a full length album entitled Obsidian Promises (2023). He has also released Metasilence (2019) on Ghunghru - an audiovisual album about a theoretical primordial black hole that emerged from a chance density fluctuation within the very early universe.

Recently, he has started a new party in London called Exquisite Corpse, which showcases local artists who each bring a radically different expression of techno and beyond, ranging from broken, hypnotic, leftfield, noise, groove, body music, and industrial. The intent of these parties are to contrast the monotony of sub-genre specific nights and re-embrace eclecticism within a single evening. These parties are also paired with a parallel screen printing practice that is integral to the overall building of the graphic-artifact world.

Matter Over Radiation [Matter Dominated Universe]

0:00 - Lepton Epoch - Similar to Hadron Epoch, lepton and anti-lepton particle annihilation events take place.

0:50 -Photon Epoch - Mass-Energy dominated by Photons, the primary relativistic particles left after the particle annihilation events of the Lepton Epoch and Hadron Epoch. These photons interact with charged particles, such as protons, electrons, and eventually atomic nuclei.

2:17 - Big Bang Nucleosynthesis - Protons and neutrons form atoms of Deuterium, much of which quickly fuses to form Helium-4, a more stable isotope. Other small amounts of Tritium and Beryllium are formed as well.

3:17 - Recombination + Decoupling - Protons and electrons combine to form electrically neutral hydrogen atoms. Photons are released by these hydrogen atoms after the atoms move to a lower energy state, and contribute to the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB).

0:00 - Planck Epoch - A non-inflationary era of the universe in which temperatures and energies were so high that subatomic particles could not form. The 4 known Fundamental Forces were all unified as a singular force

0:01 - Grand Unification Epoch - The 4 known Fundamental Forces (Gravity, Electromagnetic, Strong And Weak Nuclear Forces) have begun to separate into the Electrostrong Interaction and Gravity through a phase transition. These phase transitions are due to a phenomenon of quantum fields called “symmetry breaking”, in which infinitesimally small fluctuations crossing a critical point determines the system’s fate. This is a bifurcation of a quantum state into two paths, bringing the system from a quantum symmetric but disorderly state, into one or more definite states.

0:07 - Electroweak Epoch - While Gravity and the Strong Nuclear Force have separated, the Weak Nuclear and Electromagnetic force are still unified as the Electroweak Force. During this period, the universe is also undergoing rapid expansion through the Inflationary Epoch.

0:10 - Inflationary Epoch - The universe very rapidly increased in scale.

0:14 - All Symmetries Break - The 4 Fundamental Forces are separate and distinct.

0:21 - Quark Epoch - The universe is primary in the state of a Quark-Gluon Plasma. Baryogenesis, the formation of baryonic matter (any matter that is made up of atoms) begins.

1:50 - Hadron Epoch - While hadron and anti-hadron pairs had kept matter and antimatter in thermal equilibrium, the decreasing temperature of the universe caused a halt in production of these pairs, resulting in hadron and anti-hadron particle annihilation events.

3:12 - Neutrino Decoupling - Through the weak interaction, neutrinos existed in thermal equilibrium with baryonic matter. When the rate of those weak interactions became slower than the expansion of the universe, neutrinos began to decouple, to form the Cosmic Neutrino Background, the universe’s neutrino background radiation. 

3:39 - Baryon Acoustic Oscillations - Pressure differentials in the early plasma of the universe caused oscillations similar to sound waves that produced fluctuations in density of visible baryonic matter.
