Looking Back

Doing a songwriting class with Brian Eno this month.  This is my first homework assignment.  The HW assignment was "Start with a Scape".  My scape was my backyard at midnight.  I'm proud of this little piece because it really did end up evoking some of the emotions and sounds of my backyard.  I live with a few miles of a highway, and you can always hear a slight hum from vehicles driving by.  It was raining as I listened so I patterned the rythmic parts after the sound of rain, running through the gutters of my house.  I also used a synth to get a sort of sound of a loud car or motorcyle, or an airplane overhead every once in awhile.  My backyard is like this piece, peaceful.. almost sleepy, but also full of sounds.  

ENO HOMEWORK 1

HW assignment 2 for the Brian Eno songwriting study.  Assignment is write in a different timing than 4/4 and to use a pre-determined chord pattern that is not necessarily perfectly repetitive.  Lastly, the words are paraphrased from the pages of the book "Spanish in 3 months".  

Per the HW assignment, this is in 6/8 time, and uses the chord pattern of G D G G D G D G.  

This was a fun one for me because there's so much space, which is different than I'd probably normally write.  I'm learning to use space, and to slow down a bit more in my writing..  

I used a synth for the high string sound, a felt piano, and programmed a drum beat that has a lot of harmonic content and takes up a bit more space than I'd typically use.  Lastly, I really like this vocal sound that I got here.. and I really like the bass guitar that I played, which is the last element I added.  I made it pretty fuzzy so that it could stand out against the somewhat bloated low end of the drums/rythm pattern.  Never done that before, but will definitely try using that sound again!
