The first edition of our MIXTAPE DIARIES see's London born, Edinburgh based JOSH FB.

We asked him to tell us something about his selection for the tape: 

"A synth driven, italo influenced vibey journey through some of my favourite tracks. Ceephax's 'Legend of Phaxalot" just had to feature and when paired with Legowelt's 'Are you truly debonaire" later on, this mix has substantial synth wizardry!
Peach, Eris Drew, Barker & Lorenzo Senni all contribute to my best attempt at soulful/emotional end to the selections. Hope you guys like it, as i said Mum says it's great xx"

"I've not been searching for as much music as usual, given that I've been locked in the gaff with no gigs - aside from getting on it with my wife and forcing her to listen to me play tunes… but I had a trawl through Bandcamp recently and filled the cart. There are is a nice variety (I hope) throughout the mix, with tunes from pals or pals' labels, as well as a couple of older tracks and a slightly off piste number at the end. I tried to encapsulate what I like to play like if I'm going solo in a club. Tracks from Pseudopolis, Posthuman & J-Wax, Clouds and Dance Area (recently revealed to be Boys Noize and Erol Alkan)…"

This edition of our Soirée Selects : MiXTAPE DIARIES hosts past QMTS resident and Edinburgh local JACK C.

As usual we've asked him to tell us something about his selection...

“Been doing a few mixes in lockdown it’s good to see more people listening to mixes that DJ’s put out since we can’t go out and listen to DJ’s in the club at the moment. It lets DJ’s experiment a bit more as well since there’s no crowd for anything to go wrong in front of so we’re seeing a bit more creativity rather than people playing it too safe. 

This mix was recorded in my flat which is probably why it doesn’t have such a club feel to it nonetheless there’s still a few tracks I’d like to try out once we’re allowed back on dance floors, it’s mainly filled with tracks I’ve recently dug up since the start of lockdown.

"I wanted to bring something a little offbeat to the mixtape diaries. My mix features a number of ambient informed, broken techno tracks - heavy beats and drums that underlie soaring synths and melodic backdrops. A contrast towards a punchy yet atmospheric sound"

We asked him to tell us a little something about the mix:

"This type of mix is different from my usual as it's not the kind of music I play out. However, i have been really enjoying these songs recently so decided to record this mix to deliver them  to the fans of Dans la Nuit "

Soirée Selects : MiXTAPE DIARIES Vol.15 | SCOTT TEECE

Vol. 16 of our Soirée Selects : MiXTAPE DIARIES series treats us to 45 minutes of knee jerking house from Edinburgh based; What Goes Up resident LOFTY.

We asked him to tell us a bit about his game plan for the mix:

"The vibe for this mix is really big basslines and euphoric melodies. I wanted to capture a chilled vibe that will still keep you dancing. 
It was nice to take a different direction from my usual harder fast paced mixes and experiment with some new tunes I've been into lately. Specifically the remix of The Streets new single, the new banger from Joe Eke and ending it with a classic from Todd Terry. I had a lot of fun putting this together."

Soirée Selects : MiXTAPE DIARIES Vol.16 | LOFTY

The ‘De La…’ series asks artists to choose a certain provenance - be it a country, community, town, artist, or label - and make a 1 hour mix highlighting what they love about the music.

“I’ve chosen to record a mix to reflect the iconic South African Gumba/Synth Pop sound of the 80s and 90s. The term derives from ‘gumba gumba’ and later became ‘gumba fire’, referring to the boom of speakers during parties in South African townships. Not only do I adore of this style of music but I think it’s important to step out of what you know and to research, celebrate and appreciate music from across the globe.

In essence it’s a window into different cultures and times, and more often than not it’s a great way to grow and expand your taste, while gaining insight into new and interesting scenes that deserve more recognition. The fact South Africa was able to produce such great music during a time as suppressive and horrible as apartheid is a real credit to their people.

The first Gumba track I heard was ‘stages’ by Don Laka, which has gained much deserved recognition after its success featuring on Hunee’s “Hunchin’ All Night’ put out by Rush Hour. It was actually a friend of mine (Diogo/Caldo Verde) who is a selector in Portugal who first showed me the track and the ‘Gumba Fire’ compilation album while I was working there a couple years back. 

The contribution of black artists to the music industry is so significant I can’t even begin to try to explain it. This is a drop in the ocean, but I think the (mostly) black south African artists that built this genre deserve more recognition, especially in the UK, maybe this can help…”

"When the Dans La Nuit team asked me to put this mix together they asked for 'an hour of late night listening', so I took this as an opportunity to showcase the deeper, darker and faster side of my music taste. This is not disco lmao.
The mix is a bit of an homage to the 5ams we're unlikely to see in Edinburgh this year; it carries you through the peak hours in the club, crashes through the 4:30am wall, and holds your hand as you leave at 5am to bright sunlight.

For our second mix in the series, we've invited relative newcomer @Josh_FB to put down some tracks for us. It's safe to say he's played the Scottish capital over this past year with regular sets at Mash House, Bongo Club, Cabaret Voltaire,  and La Belle Angele.

Record loving selector DJ based in London (and formerly Edinburgh). I love sticking my head in crates and learning more about the amazing music that can be found across the world. 

I'm a bit of retro zouk specialist (checkout my zouk show on My Analog Journal for more) but also have a great interest in soca, highlife, makossa, PALOP music, bubblegum, kwaito, latin freestyle and beyond - I enjoy celebrating globally sourced groovy records to fill dancefloors, and deliver an experience that makes club goers smile while they move

My mission is to spread this wonderful music and the talented artists that contributed to its creation with as many as people as possible! 

I run a clubnight and reissue / edits label along with a few friends called “Discothèque Tropicale”. Music to bring the boogie, fill the floors and put smiles on faces! 

I do the programming for London based radio station LOOSE FM where I also run the radio shows ‘The Listening Bar’ & 'Musical Backpacking' focussing each show and the record digging on a specific genre, theme or area.
