Week one was all about synthesis. Today I decided (out of necessity) to try to make a patch to emulate that screechy rewind sound of tapes and apply it to sound files. The key to this is in controlling playback speed, so I rigged up a little tabread4~ magic to take care of things.

White noise sent through a bandpass filter, then sidechained to a bitcrusher. Weirdly soothing.

Today I returned to pmpd, the physical modeling library I used for my spring synth. I took one of their examples, a springy pyramid rigged on a string, and assigned the coordinates of each mass to my fm synth from before. This is what it sounded like when I rigged up a few keys to transformations and banged the crap out of my keyboard. Artistically speaking, of course.

Utilizing my spring synth, I created an Arvo Part inspired pitch generator. The composition is driven by a template based on Part's idea of Tintinabulae.

Finally worked out the bugs from yesterday. This patch loads a sound file to an array and then samples from it at random read points. The sound file is from one of my earlier 365 projects.

I continue to refine my automated patch from two days ago. This time I added an algorithm for formal progression. There are three states now with different harmonic content, textures, and tempi.

As this resembles something closer to a proper piece, I decided to employ my python pretentious contemporary title script. Of the 10 random catastrophes it returned, this was the least offensive.
The actual patch is an extrapolation of my earlier random-access-point player, which I've abstracted and called "stutter~". Here I've combine four of them with separate soundfiles to create a textural work.

My intention for these last few days of the month, as a way of summarizing things, is to combine various patches from the last month and apply them to a composition. Here I've modified my springy synth so that the spring is running the frequency of the partials rather than their volume. I also included the stutter~ from yesterday. Although as a composition this short piece has some shortcomings, I rather like the general effect.
