It’s become a poor substitute for actually getting something done, because it makes you feel like you’re doing something when, in fact, you aren’t. I take the listener through a series of very real problems we face in modern society, but then end each verse with the ‘solution’ of changing my profile picture to a little black square, in order to avoid any real conflict. "I grew up in a small farm town in Northwest Ohio called Fremont. And down the road, there was a much smaller town called Risingsun. I always loved that name. I think less than 100 people lived there. I actually dreamed the chorus to this song, just woke up and it was there: “Talk about a town with one stop light, you could drive through it in the middle of the night...” From there, I wanted to tell a timeless tale about a small time farmer being pushed out by big agriculture. My family’s been farming that same area for 8 generations now, and the farming profession is always changing. The story that came out isn't based on any facts, but it felt right to me. It made the point I wanted it to. Farming’s not an easy life." - Aaron Semer

After recording, we went out to a show in Toledo, as you do when you're with Jeff. This was the last time I saw him in person. We miss you and love you Jeff.

Since arriving in Seattle two decades ago, Aaron Semer has plied his lonely craft in the dirty backrooms, dingy bars, and basements of the Pacific Northwest, both solo and in a host of bands you’ve likely never heard of. His voice and worldview have weathered – fractured in some places, hardened in others – but the timeless, genre-defying quality of his songwriting remains.

Semer was raised in a farm town in rural Ohio. He spent as much time running amok on small town streets as he did on his German Lutheran Grandparents’ farm, a beautiful plot of land complete with an apple orchard, woods, and a crooked old cemetery bearing the family name. These formative experiences forever fortified his love of the rural Midwest but also made him long for more.

After two years of college in the mid-90s, Aaron dropped out, moved into a van with a friend, and set about chasing Kerouac fantasies. This eventually led to him falling in love with the Pacific Northwest and moving to Seattle. It’s here that his style began to take form. The songs you grew up with on the radio. The dusty back roads. The grimy alleys. Hobos. Hipsters. Intellectuals. Farmers. Your mulleted cousin. These characters, melodies, and stories effortlessly infuse themselves into Semer’s songs. It’s America itself, in all its glory and horror. Or as The Stranger once put it; “A listener feels as if these songs have always been there, waiting for someone to discover them.”
