ABND P 001 | VARIOUS ARTISTS - METAMACHINE

Audio/Visual collaboration between the Berlin based music label Abandoned Audio and Frantic Gallery from Tokyo. The aim and triggering point of this project derives from the urge to understand the possibilities of the collaboration between fine arts and (contemporary / electronic) music. The idea behind Metamachine is not only to create audio/visual pieces, but also research different ways of combining sound and images influenced by two different artistic fields and cultures. The results of this cooperation are 6 video works that will be presented online as well as showcased in art exhibitions taking place in Singapore, Berlin and Tokyo during 2014.

The first vinyl release on Abandoned Audio, the new sub-label from 31337 Records, Ezekiel Honig's 'A Film of String & Wood' continues his form of refracted, geographically oriented, electroacoustics. Sitting in a background of field recordings and incidental real-world objects, textured piano and horns act as cement for chunky, yet subdued rhythms that fall over themselves and snap back into place. Warm, looming tonal progressions remain incredibly intimate and focused while retaining an expansiveness of space, a perfect metaphor for Honig's music on the whole – personal and specific while intersecting with something more universal. Throughout its five tracks, 'A Film of String & Wood' stretches and pulls its melodies, weaving them through each blocky snare, each bassy kick drum phrase, with a heart and mind that hearkens to a different time, memory-tinged with a nostalgia for a moment that is yet to pass. Pressed on sturdy 180 gram vinyl and featuring artwork/design by Ezekiel Honig.

The long anticipated debut album from our staff members 'Echoton' will soon be available in stores, introducing our new digital series. The concept is to build albums as continous pieces, with each track being interconnected without interruptions. 'Hello From Earth' invites space explorers to take a trip into the depths of Berlin where the duo is hailing from. Along the journey the brothers team up with the Swedish producer 'Ingemar Stalholm' a.k.a 'Arbiter'. Sophisticated ambient/dub compositions, always interestingly arranged and constantly varying drones form melodies embraced by static noise, through the use of self programmed algorithmic logic and field recordings.

Wiklow’s 'Green Dragon, Black Tortoise' is the latest release off Abandoned Audio, sublabel of Berlin based 31337 Records; a premonition of audio that accompanies satellites, where echoes of the organic meet robotics busy at work, deep in the void. Occupying a space between IDM and ambient glitch, organic samples are peppered about and spring forth like sun flares in and among the cosmos.

At it’s core 'Green Dragon, Black Tortoise' is a flirtation with essentialism, stripping bare layers of structure and expectation, where observation meets reflection and experience meets perception.

Remaining mindful of the meditative space held by each track, a contrast can be felt throughout the record of careful precision that finds a way to flicker like a flame in the dark. Reminiscent of the past but unquestionably of the future, if AI could dream, this would be the soundtrack to the algorithms processed in space. - Words by Michael Armstrong
