Virgin of the Birds released a series of free, download-only EPs through Abandoned Love Records, beginning with Every Rival then followed by Dear Furies, Banquet Years and Fugitive Works. 2014's Winter Seeds collects 9 songs marked by shimmering reverb, attentive lyrics and general apocrypha. In a review of Winter Seeds, the Herald Scotland noted, “…the reined-in performances and simplicity of the songs training the focus on an uncommon grasp of adroit, heartfelt songcraft that sets Rooney on track to follow the likes of Bill Callahan and David Berman into the pantheon of awkward, visionary American outsiders. Essential“.

Like those EPs, Summer Palace was entirely written, recorded, mixed and mastered at home. Summer Palace, released with eclectic upstart Seattle label the China Sea Recordings Concern, trades on the strains of attentive lyrics, Apocrapha and reverb indulgence found throughout the Virgin of the Birds catalog. 2014 will see the release of the first Virgin of the Birds LP, recorded largely with a band.

"Spooky, Stony, Barely Over Thirty" is the first single from Secret Kids, the second LP from Seattle-based Virgin of the Birds set for release on vinyl and digital in October 2016 by Song, By Toad Records in the UK/Europe and Abandoned Love Records in the US. Named after a poor English translation of a Salvador Dali painting, Virgin of the Birds treads a line between intimate, lo-fi pop and the occasional grandeur of early art rock. About Virgin of the Birds’ debut EP, Mixed Choir, songs: Illinois noted, “If you like the rambling folk weirdness of Felt then you’ll no doubt like this as well.” Songwriter Jon Rooney started Virgin of the Birds as a solo project in San Francisco in the mid-00’s then built an ace band while living in Austin, TX for a couple of years before settling in Seattle. After releasing a series of free, home-recorded EPs on Rooney’s own Abandoned Love Records, Virgin of the Birds caught the attention of Edinburgh-based blog and label Song, By Toad, leading to several solo shows in Edinburgh, the inclusion of a disc full of songs on the label’s limited edition Five-Year Anniversary Box Set and the release of Winter Seeds, their 2014 debut full-length album that The Herald Scotland described as “essential.” Three songs Virgin of the Birds recorded in Edinburgh appear on the Song, By Toad Split 12” ‘Volume 4’ released in July 2016 alongside tracks by Baltimore-based troubadour Viking Moses and Scottish artists Supermoon and digitalanalogue.
 
Like Winter Seeds, Secret Kids was recorded at Her Car, a studio in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood, by Virgin of the Birds’ drummer and producer, Colin J Nelson. Upon finishing the record, prolific local bass player Ken Nottingham (the Foghorns, Sam Russell & the Harborrats, Creeping Time) rounded out the lineup as the band embarked on their first West Coast tour alongside UK chamber pop band Storm the Palace in the spring of 2016.

Donovan Quinn makes the leap back into solo activity with Dad Was Buried in His Leather Jacket, an EP of mostly uptempo story songs with character changes but consistent stories throughout each song. Herein Quinn writes about those at the end of a long series of parties, in the penumbra around the fun, just before all the booze and drugs and casual conversation turn sour... 

A large cast of collaborators help to create the atmosphere of trouble hiding behind fun. Quinn's New Bum's partner Ben Chasny adds devastating shredder guitar to "Game with No Rules", whereas Glenn Donaldson, the other half of Quinn's duo Skygreen Leopards, adds textural synth and sweet high vocals. Others on board include Elisa Ambrogio (Magik Markers), Jason Quever (Papercuts), David Novick, Michael Tapscott (Odawas) and Eric Amerman, all of whom pushQuinn's songs into surprising new sonic places.

Fast Travelling

My proposed show would aim to shine a light on independent/underground sounds from the past and present & from all corners of the globe, hopefully something akin to the old Peter Jesperson radio show (I've heard tapes), or programming you may hear on NTS radio or WFMU. Genre representation will likely skew more towards western rock music, but the goal is to incorporate not only several permutations of that idiom, but other sounds like jazz, reggae, folk, electronic, and many other sub-genres within.
