This audiobook, produced by Abarta Heritage on behalf of Transport Infrastructure Ireland, tells the story of the remarkable archaeological discoveries that were made in advance of the construction of the N22 Tralee Bypass. The Tralee Bypass and the Tralee to Bealagrellagh Link Road travel across 13.5km of one of the richest cultural landscapes in the south-west of Ireland. Along the route of the new road, archaeologists [from Rubicon Heritage Services and Irish Archaeological Consultancy] discovered and excavated a total of 33 sites. The powerful, diverse and often unique insights they gathered help to inform us about life in the past in the Vale of Tralee.

Each section of our audiobook examines an aspect of life in a specific period of time, but it begins more than 6,500 years ago, with a young woman gazing across the Atlantic’s waves from atop a Kerry beach.

The Tralee Heritage Trail Audio Guide brings you on a tour of this picturesque and historic town set in the heart of County Kerry. The town takes its name from the Irish Trá Lí, meaning the ‘strand of the River Lee’. This mighty waterway charts a course from the Stack’s Mountains toward Tralee Bay where it joins the River Gyle, also known as ‘The Big River’. These rivers are intrinsically linked to the story of the town, as we will discover on our journey today.

The town of Tralee was founded in 1216 by John Fitzthomas Fitzgerald, a powerful Anglo- Norman magnate. The FItzgeralds were responsible for the development of Tralee up to the 16th century, when control passed to the Denny family. Welcome to our audiobook, ‘Places for the Living, Places for the Dead: Archaeological discoveries on the N25 New Ross Bypass’. This audiobook tells the story of the remarkable archaeological discoveries that have revealed the story of a landscape through time.
Many significant sites were discovered during archaeological investigations along the N25 New Ross Bypass. The new road commences near Glenmore, Co. Kilkenny. The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge, Ireland’s longest bridge, crosses the River Barrow and its reclaimed estuarine wetlands between Pink Rock and Stokestown, south of New Ross. East of the river it runs between a series of low hills – the prominent landmark of Slievecoiltia – a vantage point to which we will return over the course of this audiobook – and the medieval town of New Ross. At its northern end it passes east of Lacken Hill, crossing a ridge to its north before joining the N30 New Ross to Enniscorthy road.

Along the bypass route, archaeologists working on behalf of Wexford County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland, uncovered more than 30 previously unknown archaeological sites, encountering evidence ranging from the Mesolithic hunter gatherers who were the first to people the landscape of the to the landlords and labourers of the 19th century whose capital and toil created the well-ordered agricultural landscapes that led to Wexford being known as the ‘Model County’.

This audiobook tells the stories of some of those sites, revealing the travellers, farmers and traders that passed through. Some stayed longer than others but all left their mark and played a role in shaping this landscape through which the unstoppable River Barrow flows. The Barrow is one of three rivers – along with the Nore and the Suir – collectively known as the Three Sisters, which drain much of south Leinster and east Munster and flow into the Celtic Sea through Waterford Harbour.

Places For The Living Podcast

There are few places as deeply layered in stories as Knowth. Located in the famous bend of the Boyne like its near neighbour Newgrange, Knowth has been a place of significance for millennia. Through the Neolithic as a place of settlement and ritual, an Iron Age ancestral burial ground, an early medieval ‘royal’ residence of the kings of North Brega, and activity continued through the medieval period and onwards. Today Knowth is part of the celebrated Brú na Bóinne World Heritage Site, and visited by thousands of people every year. 

Its complex story was uncovered in a truly monumental series of excavations led by the late Professor George Eogan. In this episode of Amplify Archaeology Podcast, Neil chats with Dr Kerri Cleary who discusses those excavations and George’s incredible legacy in Irish archaeology, and describes the story of Knowth through time.

Within a short drive south of Carlow town are the rich agricultural lands of Tinryland. The village and its surrounding townlands have an abundant history that spans from the Mesolithic period to the modern age. The name Drogheda comes from the Irish, Droichead Átha, meaning ‘The bridge of the Ford’. The town was founded in the late twelfth century by the Norman Lord of Meath, Hugh de Lacy. Situated near the mouth of the River Boyne, Drogheda was perfectly placed to become one of Ireland’s most important ports during the medieval period, and the town grew wealthy through trade right across Europe.

A monastery was founded here by St Buithe in the sixth century and it is from this early saint that Monasterboice takes its name; Mainistir Bhúithe, Buithe’s Monastery. Over time it flourished and grew in both size and prominence. Today, however, most of it has vanished and all that is visible is the very heart of the monastery, with a fine round tower and three high crosses, one of which is the finest high cross in Ireland, and, therefore, the world.

Mellifont Abbey was the first Cistercian abbey in Ireland, known as the ‘Mother House’, a base from which the community expanded, adding more and more institutions known as ‘daughter houses’ across Ireland. The name Mellifont comes from the Latin Fons Mellis, meaning ‘Fount of Honey’.

The museum is housed in the cottage where Francis Ledwidge was born in 1887 near Slane, the eighth of nine children of a poor family. He would become one of the most important Irish poets and left a legacy of poetry that speaks of his deep love of Ireland, Meath and the Boyne Valley.

Like its near neighbour Tara, the Hill of Slane is also steeped in Irish myth, legend and history. According to Irish mythology, this was the burial place of Sláine mac Dela, king of the legendary Fir Bolg. It is from Dumha Sláine, meaning ‘burial mound of Sláine’ that we get the modern name, Slane.

Trim Castle is the largest and undoubtedly one of the most impressive Norman castles in Ireland. It stands at an important crossing point on the River Boyne, which gave the town its name, Áth Truim, or ‘the Ford of the Elder Trees’. Trim Castle was constructed by the powerful Norman lord Hugh de Lacy in the 1170s.

This show garden at Bloom demonstrates a selection of key food plants from Ireland’s past. All the plants are based on archaeological evidence and seeing, smelling and touching the plants helps you to gain a tangible glimpse into the changing nature of diet from the earliest settlers in Ireland to the present day. The gardens are accompanied by wonderful reconstruction images by artists that visually represent the evidence and allow us to picture what life was like in the past.
