Quadrant Soundscape presents In Focus 007

The 7th instalment of our In:Focus Series places the spotlight on a very specific point in time - The Early Deepchord records years.

In the late 1990s the Deepchord record label was co-founded by Rod Modell & Mike Schommer in Detroit, Michigan. After just four years and achieving far more success than initially anticipated, DeepChord Records wound down operations. For this In Focus we want to concentrate specifically on the work that Rod and Mike did before they disbanded.

Across the Dub Techno scene the name Deepchord carries the highest of gravitas. Elite level quality, and considered by many to be, alongside Basic Channel, the blueprint of the genre.

So much has been written about Deepchord over the years, and we're not here to repeat what's been said (you can check out a great interview with Mike from a few years ago here - inn8.net/interview-with-mike-schommer-deepchord/ ), we're here to celebrate the music and we hope that through this session we have done that.

Chez has a style that is hard to put your finger on, as Rio 017 well demonstrates. Recorded on the opening night of Bonanza, Chez kicked the terrace into action with a chuggy but cheerful selection of swampy groovers. 

Moving seamlessly from heads down tech house to breaks and EBM-ish numbers, Rio 017 is peppered with flecks of acid, swaying basslines and plenty of character.

How You Make Me Feel (Original)

“Take Two” is a new series of EP’s under SaturdaySelects that focuses on the creativity and rendition of artists we work on remixes and edits of some of their favourite tracks. This gives a new outlook at an existing track adding flavours and sounds that give the track a new lease of life. The project also pairs up a designer with the artist of the project to create a collaborative effort in giving their analysis of the tracks vibe and translates it into the cover design of the EP, hence creating an audio-visual synergy and project.

Our next premiere comes to you from rhythm section aficionado Contours. After the much acclaimed Loose Wood EP back in 2016, North West is the Manchester Producer’s second release for Shall Not Fade. North West is brimming with all the delicacies we have come to expect from a Contours EP:  jazzy rhodes chords, tasty sax licks, and incredibly intricate polyrhythmic drum patterns.

Our choice cut from the EP is the title track, North West. The track opens with an airy repeating trumpet line that slowly rises much like the morning fog, as shimmering bells begin to sway around in the mix like a brisk gust on wind chimes. This eventually gives way to an entrancing conga pattern that pitters and patters like rain drops on a roof. Eventually a 2-step kick comes in and adds even further bounce to the track. On North West, Contours showcases his unique ability to fuse jazz and afro-beat influences into a pulsing thought provoking journey through a misty and grayscale terrain.
