'All This Trouble' is the first track to land from Jonny Drop’s 2nd album "The Only Sound".  Warm, hazy Jazz is covered by a patchwork of percussion and beats that clearly display his sensibilities as a drummer. This early taste of the new album, due in June, is one of the closest heir’s to the "Sub Plot" crown, but confidently points at the producer’s development, which will be clearly heard in his new material. 

Jonny Drop’s debut, "Sub Plot", was the very first album release on the fledgling Albert’s Favourites label at the beginning of 2016. The initial offering, a 7” of album favourites 'Mind Field' and 'This Is The One' had quickly been picked up on by the good people at BBC Radio 6 Music as well as some of Drop’s personal heroes including Kenny Dope, Mr. Thing and Nightmares On Wax. But when the infectious rhythms and warm production of the beat tape landed, its impact was greater than anyone at the label could have hoped. 

Although Jonny never stopped producing beats in the following years, he was also kept busy as a drummer, playing live for Andrew Ashong, The Bongolian and Connie Constance, whose Boring Connie EP he also laid down beats for. Then in early 2018 his band The Expansions delivered their celebrated "Murmuration" LP. All the while, with the support of his label family, Drop had been evolving his solo sound too.

"The Only Sound sees a huge progression in my writing direction, as I collaborated with multiple vocalists and musicians, instead of the usual 'one-man band' approach. The development of these processes make this LP a steady departure from the beat-tape influence of my past releases, and hopefully, showcase the more original sound I've been working to achieve over the past few years."

Various Channels is a new series within the Darker Than Wax catalogue - a selector-led compilation series that pushes diversity in sound while also encapsulating a common connection of what brings people together. For the first volume, it’s all about location. Deeply inspired by the new wave of creative energy in New York City, the label is proud to present ‘Various Channels Vol. 1 : NYC’ - a compilation highlighting key artists at the forefront of NYC’s blooming music ecosystem, curated by selector Marco Weibel. While Darker Than Wax was born in Singapore, our satellite (or second) home is NYC.

A key figure behind Darker Than Wax since its early days, Marco moved to NYC in 2014, and has continued to establish a humble presence for the label through his tireless work as a DJ, Curator, Promoter & Radio Host. Within 6 years, Marco has seen New York’s underground grow through artists’ continual efforts to push the envelope and blur the lines between sounds. Thanks in part to uncompromising venues and community spaces such as The Lot Radio in Brooklyn (where Marco is running our weekly radio show alongside label peer Mawkus), a fresh crop of producers and DJs are elevating the music of NYC.

This compilation serves as a snapshot of this moment in time, spotlighting select artists making waves - including Jitwam, James Tillman, Toribio, Ensemble Entendu, David Marston and Tristan Arp. This project is also personal to Marco’s experience of digging deep into the city and connecting with kindred spirits, the selections reflecting the creative energy of his close musical family, who traverse eclectic sound spectrums from R&B/Soul, Balearic Grooves, House, Broken Beat and beyond.

In 2018 Far Out Recordings signed a record deal with Brooklyn born, nomadic producer Jneiro Jarel. Having just put the finishing touches to the recordings, Jarel suffered an ischemic stroke while living and working in Costa Rica and his wife Indigo was forced to set up a crowd fund to cover special medical transport back to the states to receive treatment.

The release was put on hold, but thanks to the generosity of friends and fans around the world, Jarel was able to get the care he needed and is now on the long road to recovery.

We’re overjoyed to finally announce that Jneiro Jarel’s After A Thousand Years is now set for an October 2020 release. Throughout a career that has spanned over twenty years and seen collaborations with MF DOOM, Thom Yorke, Damon Albarn, BadBadNotGood, Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, Kimbra and Khujo Goodie (Dungeon Family), Jneiro Jarel’s consistently distinctive, forward thinking productions, as well as his love for the music of Brazil, made his partnership with Far Out a perfect fit.

Recorded between New York, New Orleans, Miami and Costa Rica, After A Thousand Years features legendary multi-instrumentalist Bill Summers, famed for his work with Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones and Eddie Henderson. The album also features Malawian-American guitarist Masauko Chipembere who has worked with the likes of RZA from Wu- Tang Clan and Ladybug Mecca from Digable Planets. For Jarel, After A Thousand Years is “a culmination of the longstanding musical contributions of the African diaspora.” Permeating the Brazilian music and Latin jazz Jarel has loved and drawn inspiration from, as well as the stateside jazz, soul and funk Jarel grew up around, the influence of Africa and its musical history, on both North and South America, is key to the album’s sound. On lead single “Banana Peel”, Jarel’s outernational perspective makes for a track that is almost impossible to place geographically: you can hear the swing of Jarel’s native New Orleans jazz, the vibrance of Costa Rican rainforests as well as the influence of Jarel’s vast collection of Brazilian records. “Viberian Waves” is equally nonconformist, morphing from funky baroque-flavoured instrumental hip hop into a bossa inspired, percussive jam.

Taking its inspiration from the biblical prophecies found in the books of Isaiah, Daniel, and Revelation, foretelling the fully realized, physical and spiritual restoration of the earth and
mankind after the thousand year reign of the Messianic Kingdom, After A Thousand Years contemplates and celebrates a world where everlasting love, peace, and harmony abound under a sovereign, divine rulership. 

After A Thousand Years will be released on Vinyl LP, CD and digitally on the 30th October 2020 via Far Out Recordings.
