It’s far from rare to hear golden age veterans (or new skool artists with a strong affinity for the era) claim they’re bringing back that classic boombap, yadda, yadda, yadda. Alarm bells go off, because we’ve all heard the dull throwbacks that follow cookiecutter attempts to recreate former magic.

That being said, Jeru Tha Damaja actually backs up his claim with this particular song. A spacy beat by Large Pro, laced with Jeru’s mathematical flair and scientific sidenotes. If ‘Solar Flares’ is any indication, his upcoming EP The Hammer, which also features contributions by PF Cuttin and the Beatnuts, should bang.

I got the opportunity to officially remix this classic song to coincide with the release of a new Donny Hathaway box set. I was given the original multitrack master of the studio version (different from the live version)and it consisted of 8 different instrument and vocal tracks (as opposed to the more usual 24 tracks) 
When I take on a remix, my first goal is to make it work on a current dance floor. I like to stay very close to the originally recorded sound and In most case there's plenty to be reworked on the multitrack master to achieve this. 
This case proved a little different as there were few rhythm elements I could use to fit within current standards of club loudness levels. So I decided to take a slightly different approach, and add a new set of (acoustic) drums,  to bend the original Soul vibe a little towards Disco territory.
