Melba Moore was born in 1945 in New York City, New York to parents Teddy Hill and Gertrude Melba Smith, later known as Bonnie Davis. She initially was raised in Harlem, New York until the age of nine when her mother remarried a jazz pianist named Clement Mooreman. Moore attended Newark Arts High School in Newark, New Jersey.[2] Her mother, Bonnie Davis had a No. 1 R&B hit with "Don't Stop Now", prior to Melba's birth. Although her biological father was Big Band leader and saxophonist Teddy Hill, it was her stepfather Mooreman (who played on "Don't Stop Now") who became a prime influence and encouragement in Moore's musical pursuits and talent, insisting she learn to play the piano. Initially, Moore graduated from college and worked as a music teacher, but soon opted to switch careers. Moore chose her stage name by shortening her stepfather's surname from Moorman to Moore and using her middle name, "Melba".

Review: Here comes a lavish disco double pack drop from the Redux Inc stable, who have committed one track per side for this fat and loud serving of party provisions. First up is T.S. Monk's 'Candidate For Love' which gets re-rubbed by Casa Blanco for a sizzling peak time disco inferno. Then Incognito and Jocelyn Brown's perennial 'Always There' gets sent into the cosmos thanks to 'Re-Invention Of Time' version, while Lonnie Liston Smith's 'Expansions' gets turned out in style with the 'Sands Till The End Of Time mix'. Finishing on Side D with yet another banger, Sylvester's 'I Need You' gets the 'NS & LG Phunky' treatment with all the wildest hooks of the seminal disco track buffed up and placed front and centre.
