One of the most exciting artists to emerge in techno circles in recent times, Drumcode is excited to present the label’s first EP from Boxia.

Over the last 12 months the UK artist has impressed with his classy take on techno that mines two decades of rave. Last year’s ‘Colour Sequence’ EP on We Are The Brave marked one of 2017’s standout releases, before being tapped by Maya Jane Coles to remix a track from her latest album ‘Take Flight’, while B.Traits also shone the spotlight on him for a Future 12 residency on BBC Radio 1 throughout September. Boxia first came into contact with Adam Beyer when he opened the Car Park at Tobacco Dock for LWE’s NYD event in 2016, and since then the pair have spoken regularly sharing similar tastes in music and DJing. He dropped his first cut on DC during the summer of ’16, with ‘Revolution’ that featured on A-Sides Vol. 5, making him primed and ready for his first full length EP in 2018.

The four-track work lives up to his growing reputation for crafting beautiful, nuanced and ultimately very powerful electronic music. The EP opens with ‘No World Order’, a deep transcendental slice of techno propelled by a wicked acid line and vocal that leads to a galloping finish. ‘Only Human’ is drenched in atmosphere and old skool wonder, a brilliant composition of punchy multi-layered drum work, catchy synth lines and cutting acid that reveals its tender side with emotive broken beat interludes. ‘Unreal’ is a big peak time belter, raising the tempo to sweaty palms level, as a propulsion of acid and a memorable riff fill the technosphere. The title track ‘Ethereal Education’ closes out the work, a beautiful chord-driven vocal cut that evokes images of the classic dance that characterised Boxia’s earlier years and makes a fitting outro to this outstanding EP.

Mark Reeve makes his welcome return to the Drumcode fold with a powerful three-tracker ‘Far Away’.

In recent years Mark Reeve has become a pivotal member of the Drumcode crew. His 2015 EP ‘Run Back’ was a standout, before he backed it up strongly with ‘Nine of You’, his collaboration with Adam Beyer that featured on A-Sides Vol.5, ensuring his place in the hearts of DC fans. As further evidence of his importance to the collective, Beyer has selected him to suit up for the inaugural Drumcode Festival happening this August in association with Awakenings. 

Harking back to formative times in the ‘90s when he’d frequent Sven Väth’s legendary Omen in Frankfurt, the title track to Reeve’s ‘Far Away’ is a timeless beauty, driven by a celestial melody line and emotive bass notes that lobs it into the kind of laser-kissed territory that would make even the most jaded of raves throw their arms skyward. ‘Fragile’ follows, a classy bass-driven cut that makes its mark with deep subterranean stabs and punchy kicks. Rounding out the EP is ‘Redemption’ a tougher, heads-down techno workout imbued with plenty of energy thanks to a crafty bass melody that runs throughout.

Mark Reeve - Far Away - Drumcode - DC187

Brothers Harvey and Ryan McKay return to Drumcode with their dynamic Alias project.

We were introduced to Alias last year when the McKay brothers dropped the impact-heavy ‘Visions’ EP mid-way through 2017. The duo followed with a lauded contribution for Drumcode Live and the buzz from fans was palpable. The follow up sees the pair in powerhouse form. 

The title track ‘NRG’ is an attitude-packed tour de force; compromised of aggressive snares, warped vocals and a tension-filled break, it has been smashed by Adam Beyer for the last six months. ‘Orange Sunshine’ pulls no punches as it dishes out apocalyptic acid paired with the sibling’s startling drum work. ‘The Event’ rounds out the EP and is an exhilarating affair propelled by uplifting synth lines and a buzzing energetic bassline.

The opener Atlantis acts like an immersion in viscous chords sustained for the entirety of the track, with synth arrays lighting up the lead in what can be described as an ultimate suspense-builder.

Celestia amps up the pace, while exploring a similar sound print characterised by radiating synth rays wrapped up in liquid percussion.

Elfenberg showcase a murkier soundscape, as Kigelia plunges in with a tribal drumline and ethereal percussion. Exotic elements come about in the shape of chanting vocals and atypical whistles, blending in seamlessly with the melody.

Last but not least, what makes Satao special is its evocative production, kicking off as a slow burner, with enough sometimes-subtle-sometimes-abrupt shifts to sustain an upbeat and punchy tempo fit for stirring up the dancefloor.

About Acalanto

Garance recently composed "Acalanto" in tribute to the Indians of the area of Rio Negro, state of Amazonas (Brazil). This piece is a special project for her, because she lived a few years in Brazil and has a strong emotional connection with this country. It was while listening to traditional songs on the FUNAI (National Foundation for Indians) site that she thought about using a voice sample.

The "Acalanto Project" presents "Ahãdeaki" and "Hohde", which are songs chanted by the Tukano Oriental and Aruaque Indians in the Upper Rio Negro region of the State of Amazonas in Brazil, generally sung during the "Dabucurís", celebrations where women offer a fermented drink caxirí - macaxeira, pupunha, character, pineapple etc. - to men. These celebrations are an opportunity for them to express what they feel and what can not be said in other situations of everyday life. These songs are taught on informal occasions by their mothers or grandparents. The songs on the CD translate the spirit and soul that inhabit these women and tell a little story of their life by the river.

About Garance

Garance was raised in Geneva during a time where many squats still remained throughout the city. This unique setting created a number of possibilities for her to discover new music and musical movements. Attracted by the nightlife, wild and vilolent, filled with emotion, frequent random encounters with eccentric and exhuberant figures, there could only be one style of music suitable as the soundtrack of this nightcrawler’s life: electronic music. Previously and besides these activities, she learnt to play the flute, bagpipes and music theory. This academic musical background was sure to influence her in her way of doing deejaying and creating her own music, way later...

All along her career, she has visited a lot of venues and festivals in different countries (Lethargy Festival, Electron Festival, D-Edge, Terraza Music Park, Sisyphos, Ritter Butzke, Trans Musicales, Polaris Festival...). Her DJ set always contains a genius mix of famous songs, as well as some new discoveries. At first driven by melodies, you will be amazed by the way she can switch from one atmosphere to another. Garance is a risk taker, who doesn’t limit herself musically.

It's no secret that The Netherlands is- and has always been a breeding ground for talented electronic musicians. Manual Music has traditionally been a label that has been particularly supportive towards Dutch upcoming artists, having worked with now known producers such as Applescal, Eelke Kleijn, Arjuna Schiks, Qbical, Alessandro Diga, Patrice Baumel and Nuno Dos Santos amongst many others in the earlier stages of their careers already. Now the label introduces another new name hailing from The Netherlands; Corren Cavini.

Corren Cavini has developed a sound that spans a wide musical range, from groovy techno all the way to ambient-induced deep house. Incorporating inspiration from visual art and natural elements into his creative work, has made the young dutchman a very versatile artist. Valuing brightness and colour as well as technological innovation, Corren Cavini is an artist who truly stands out of the bunch.

'Out There' marks his Manual Music debut, a crossover tune with it's melodic club friendly dance floor arrangement but with a catchy vocal to go along with it seamlessly. And if you think the vocals are a bit too "poppy" for your liking, then feel free to pick up the instrumental mix which is also included.

First up on remix duties you'll find a deep moody and warm remix by Qilla Records label head- and Perspectives / Parquet / Motek artist Kohra. One of India's "best kept secrets" as far as we're concerned.

The second remix is provided for by Dutch duo Huminal, hot on the heels of their MNL single 'Vertigo', but also known for their immaculate output on labels such as Einmusika, Proton Music, ICONYC and Mango Alley to name a few. They transform 'Out There' into a proper synth roaring melodic techno cut. Massive!
