‘Vicissitude’, the debut EP from Los Angeles-based producer Lag Switch, to be released on Parisian label Abîme, is a record that tells the story of light and dark in which those two collide within a single entity.

On one side, there is the harrowing sound design, the monstrous textures and the overall lugubrious ambiance throughout the record. It depicts the bleak existence of a solitary creature, repulsive yet confused, steadily dragging itself through a barren wasteland leaving pain and suffering in its wake.

As the name of the record suggests, its other side is infused with hopeful and scaterred chords progressions paired with elegant motifs. While obscured by a thick layer of dark, desperate matter, a powerful light seeks tries to bring order to the underlying chaos.

When taking a closer look and immersing oneself in Vicissitude, the apparent contradiction between those two fades away, and we’re let with a brilliant depiction of one’s humanity’s oldest story. The creature, despite its unrestrained nature, reaches a benevolent understanding of itself and blurs light and dark into a visceral manifestation of hope as the record concludes.

Gavin Vanaelst, also known as DJ Charme (formerly recognized as Kassett), produces electronic music that varies from bombastic ambient compositions to lofty rhythmic cuts. In the past he has collaborated with notable artists like Dntel, Golin, Lauren Auder and Zwangere Guy. His debut album 'Charme' in 2018 received support from renowned international labels such as Warp. After a brief period of silence, DJ Charme returned in October with his second full-length album, 'Hartenjagen', followed now by the 5-track extended play 'Starling', which marks his debut on Slagwerk.

Heliacal Rising is a celestial phenomenon where a star, planet, or constellation first becomes visible above the eastern horizon at dawn, just before being obscured by the rising sun's light. 

It symbolizes a renewal, the rebirth of light, and the timeless dance between darkness and dawn.

'Heliacal Rising' is a collaborative work, co-created by Quit Life, Azrel, and amazing vocalists : Trophie, Olalla.lux and W.ANNA.W. They have helped shape the identity of the EP. Their voices add layers of meaning and emotion, turning each track into a living, breathing entity. Through serendipitous connections on Instagram and Soundcloud : Heliacal Rising was born.

Music is a vital escape from the routines of daily life, a source of energy and solace. We hope Heliacal Rising offers the same refuge and inspiration to our listeners, allowing them to find their own moments of peace and rejuvenation.

BOOSTED, out now on 29 Speedway, is a collaborative album and malevolent viral entity conjured through the combined effort of Brooklyn-based behemoths MURDERPACT and global data sorcerer TRNGS. The album is available as a digital download and in the form of a possessed flash drive, coded by artist Mark Fingerhut, spawning a tightly orchestrated and visually punishing piece of malware that arrests control of the user's desktop for the album's duration.

The .exe incorporates images of insects, cars, cosmic entities, natural anomalies and linguistic symbols are streamed to the user in rapid succession, while computer windows, error messages, notepad windows and loading bars dance across the desktop in lockstep with the thematic movements of the music.

The result is a brutal software experience whose classification lives somewhere between a music video, a game, a drug, and a visualizer. At the end, the three audio files are deposited onto the user's desktop, along with some illustraions from designer Brian Mark.

Meeting online in 2018 and sharing a few stages in 2019, the dawn of 2020 found three musicians employed at the same venue and presented with an opportunity; the venue’s brief sponsorship by Red Bull. This granted the trio a full day of recording time at NYC’s Red Bull Studios to produce music for some sort of venue-curated series.

The studio session actually happened, yielding hours of high fidelity recordings; dense electroacoustic improvisations; ancient-alien ritual beats and futuristic power jazz. BOOSTED falls somewhere between Autechre, Miles Davis' Electric Band and Boredoms, divided into three BPM’s; 140, 160, and 180.

However, weeks later a pandemic gripped the planet. The venue closed, the trio quarantined, Red Bull’s music program was shelved and its studio shuttered forever. The trio retained the recordings and immediately set out to sculpt something far greater and stranger from the sludge. In the intervening four years, audio from the session was sent back and forth across the globe, rearranged, mixed, remixed, chopped, looped, layered, broken into stems, and reassembled to create BOOSTED.

Scores is a compilation exploring musical notations and how they can be interpreted as sounds. People have always tried to translate sonic expressions into visual cues that could be archived, passed down, and transformed back into music. 

From symbols to numbers, grids, staffs, figures or abstract shapes, several languages have been developed and continuously questioned to improve the ability to retain the emotion and meaning sounds can convey - what lies behind the veil.
 
What if this time, the notation would come beforehand?

The project unfolded in two phases. In the first one, visual artists from the Global URL Nation could propose one sheet of music score, free of interpretation. They were invited to play with musical notations and explore what it would even mean.

In the second phase, artists from GUN could pick one sheet and create a track trying to follow it as much as possible. It invited them to question music as a physical object, with its shapes, colors, textures and layers with the following :

__How is the overall composition? Are there any axis or lines that could be interpreted as a timeline or a melodic scale?
__How many discrete elements are in the image? How are they laid out?
__What are the shapes involved?  What is their scale? Do they have sharp or blurry outlines?
__What are the colors/textures used? How do they relate with each other in terms of tones, contrasts…?
__How are the different elements layered on top of each other? Are they superimposed or do they merge in some way?
__How would they translate them in musical terms, such as textures, notes, structures, timbres, rhythms, dynamics? 

It welcomed Bademjan, Baje Nunca, C+Vis, Capiuz, Clair X, C.T.A.A.M.  Ecovoron, Epiphagi, HeedLess, Mambo Kahn, migu, POL100, Yau Hei ASJ & Ziyiz for 14 tracks ranging from ethereal scorescapes to hyperstimulating scratches. Sounds and shapes weave together, blurring the boundaries between the two media to create one whole entity
