28.11.21 12pm -2pm netilradio blending live performance and djing for Episode 7 of An ocean of ink in a single drop: The Gateway Experience. The show is based around Dr Robert Monroe’s Hemi-sync technique for out of body experiences and astral projection. The show will follow the narration of a diary of my experiences exploring the technique, which involved specific exercises alongside audio files to synchronise both hemispheres of my brain, with the aim to facilitate out of body experiences; to say the outcome was wild was an understatement. It was part of a big CIA study recently declassified into the US government exploring consciousness expansion and remote viewing for espionage purposes, where they undertook extensive experiments using the technique.

°s is inspired by patterns in urban nature: language; behaviour; seasons, and along with the poem, explores the cyclical psychological peaks and troughs experienced during a pandemic. Live multi-instrumental improvisations apply the fibonacci sequence to create melodies and rhythms that mimic fractal patterns in nature, and are situated within binaural field recordings captured during essential travel in the first pandemic lockdown.

Following on from his debut album ºs on AD93, conceptual artist Aboutface reveals his vaporous new LP, a vital climate emergency-themed project which utilises poetry collected from his dreams alongside sound recordings captured during polar expedition c/o the Alfred Wegener Institute - a centre for polar and marine research. Featuring long-term violin collaborator Taro and dream prose reciter Leyla Pillai, it explores a surreal intersection between the collective dream realm and the disappearing polar cryosphere. 

All profits from this release are to  be donated to Extinction Rebellion’s legal fund to help provide counsel to those protesting against contributors to the climate emergency, much needed since the UK government have decided to criminalise disruptive protesting, at a time when civil disobedience is urgently needed most to force action and help mitigate the climate emergency.

1. Aboutface Ft. Taro - Small Hands And Feet In The Sand Show You The Great Illusion

Zan, Zendegi, Azadi (Woman, Life, Freedom), initially a Kurdish motto, 
زن زندگی آزادی has become the chant of current protests in Iran. Women bravely have risked their lives on the streets to fight against patriarchy, harassment, and servitude to a fascist system. This project has been developed and advised with the help of an anonymous collective of individuals in Iran & London. 

The release includes handmade limited edition USB stones with ‘Mahsa' (مهسا) engraved on them in Farsi, alongside a digital mixed media download that includes the music and artworks. Mahsa Amini is a 22-year-old Iranian of Kurdish origin who had been arrested for allegedly breaching the Islamic dress code for women and died in suspicious circumstances whilst in custody.  This was the catalyst for the mass public protests that continues to be met by regime-led brutality, leading to the deaths of many other protesters in Iran.






The music has been developed from my 2017 project Parvata (sanskrit for mountain): a one-take live improvisation using photography hung in the performance space to interpret the ancient hindu myth of Parvati - daughter of the mountains: love, loss, death, re-birth and reunion through perseverance. 

Profits from the release will be donated to united4mahsa: a non-governmental, non-profit organisation dedicated to informing international audiences about this uprising’s protests, which have spread across 50+ cities in Iran.  https://www.united4mahsa.com.

Programe note:

Exploring Springfield Park’s arcane environmental characteristics to interpret the area’s internal-landscape and socio-political milieu. Algorithmically composed hidden melodies of sonified weather data that use only the symbolic sound of an acorn falling to the ground; invites the environment to articulate spectrotemporal elements of the composition. 
Five choreographed VHS loops of the park conceptually degenerated to remove our perceptive filters, which have been subjected to collusive manipulation; affect independent acorn sounds to create a dystopic orchestra. Challenging a superficial interpretation of utopic surroundings subjected to public service cuts, increased cost of living and disenfranchised youths.

Aboutface presents a conceptual performance called: Pensée Sculpture (mind sculpture), which used sound, music and spoken word (in French) to create abstract worlds of art in our minds 🌀🌀🌀💙😵‍💫💙🌀🌀🌀.This performance will be presented by Le Sculpteur d’esprit (The mind sculptor). Pensée Sculpture 3. Ancient technology - Technologie ancienne (Re-version Digital Exclusive)

‘Close your eyes. From the darkness, a transparent circular prism appears in the distance, with its soft outlines refracting all colours from the spectrum. As you gently glide closer, you notice an unfamiliar world through the other side of the prism, this is the portal to your thought sculpture (Pensée Sculpture) number 3.

‘You have passed through the prism into an unknown world, and find yourself gliding through an underground passage with pearl white lattice honeycomb walls, which shimmer with refracted light when you divert your glaze suddenly. You come to a halt in an oval shaped chamber with a metal sculpture in the centre, there is a faint vibrating sound which seems to be coming from the honeycomb walls. You move closer to the object and notice that it is made from an unfamiliar alloy which looks like a crystalline metal draped in a copper coloured moss. You step backwards from the object to view it from a more distant perspective.
It is a 3 dimensional word written in an unfamiliar language. Your body rushes with a warm rush, and you are certain that this is both ancient and some form of advanced technology.’

‘Close your eyes. From the darkness, a transparent pentagonal prism appears in the distance, with its soft outlines refracting all colours from the spectrum. As you gently glide closer, you notice an unfamiliar world through the other side of the prism, this is the portal to your thought sculpture (Pensée Sculpture) number 4

‘As you move through this prism into an unfamiliar world, 108 fine charcoal lines begin to uniformly extend from your body towards the horizon, each line vibrating with a unique overtone of a vast polyphonic sound. As the lines move further into the distance, there is a sudden 90 degree phase shift up, causing the lines start to become independent, sketching out deltas, ridges and bifurcations – all elements of a towering fingerprint being formed in the sky . As you glide closer to the centre, the fingerprint core just starts to form into the shape of an elephant’s eye, which blinks, obtains focus and fixes its glaze directly on you. Suddenly, the clear sky beyond the lines shatters like glass, causing a wave of shimmering sound. The eye begins to omit a bioluminescent pulse like a deep sea invertebrate, rippling through the fingerprint lines like currents of electricity.’

‘You have passed through the prism into an unknown world, you are met by a giant sunflower head, seeds spiralling in a fractal pattern with orange and red hues swirling like currents in a tidal rock pool. You gently glide towards the flower head which now extends to as far as you can see. You are now so close that each geometrically separated seed is passing you by as if you were flying over a vast golden pine forest. There is a gravitational force pulling you towards a hole in the centre of the flower head, leading you into a vast black space filled with streams of fine blue pollen swirling like starling murmurations. Separate strands of the pollen begin to weave together to slowly reveal sections of a giant human body. Almost translucent like fine satin chiffon, the pollen begins to form bones, muscles, organs and limbs, to reveal a monolithic body with no head or hands. You look down and realise that this body is actually your own, and are witnessing the pollen gently completing your arms with hands and fingers, like a coastal breeze sculpting the fine sand into paint stroked dunes.'

The world disappears when you go into it

A live performance with 4 sequences that reflect 4 perspectives of a white lily pond flower, increasing in magnification, to articulate the trials and tribulations of inflorescence - the blooming of a flower, as a metaphor of the pain, adversity and growth experienced by humanity. Centred around music harvested from sanskrit mantra meditation - repeating ancient sanskrit mantras until melodies appear, then are translated to instruments. Video art and animations projected onto a moving human body, becoming more vivid as it gets darker/closer in magnification of the white pond lily. Originally developed and performed at Freerotation Festival, 5th Jul 2024.

Acoustic guitar, electronics, composition and arrangement by Aboutface. 

During a month living with the Wampís in the Amazon Rainforest, Aboutface and the Wampís community collaboratively captured field recordings, music instrumentation and traditional Wampis Nampets – ancient songs sung from the perspective of animals living in their rainforest environment.
 
These recordings then informed 4 improvised performances to articulate the story of the 4 Nampet songs from within each animal's habitat, to depict nature and culture as inseparable, and to propose that humanity is not exclusive to humans but a multinaturalist characteristic available to all living organisms.
 
This is the first project of its kind in Wampís history and contains sound recordings of biodiversity that no longer exist due to deforestation.

Indigenous-managed Amazonian rainforests sequester around 340 million tonnes of CO₂ each year—equivalent to the UK’s annual fossil fuel emissions. In stark contrast, non-Indigenous-controlled forests have become sources of carbon emissions, therefore accelerating our global climate crises. Among the vital custodians of these precious ecosystems are the Wampís people, who protect 1.3 m ha of precious rainforest territory currently being decimated by mining for gold. This devastating practice is currently decimating Wampís territory, destroying their river habitats, leaving toxic methylmercury pollution that strips all biodiversity, contaminates the food chain, and causes widespread harm.
 
100% of all sales revenues from this release will directly go to the Wampís to protect their rainforest territory, to fund Wampís-led eco-initiatives against illegal mining, alongside ways to preserve Wampís cultural heritage– embedded in their songs, art and crafts, central to their conservation of their territory called The Iña Wampisti Nunke: A system of life that encompasses reciprocal relationships between humans, plants, animals, and spirits, central to the harmony of all its multi-dimensional ecology– which they term Tarimat Pujut.

A two-part performance, augmented oil painting and mixed media collage that explores the relationship between technology and nature, using the conceptual transposition of Boolean logic gates used in circuitry, onto the rugged natural landscape of the Roseland Peninsula, Cornwall, with an aim to propose two scenarios of the future: how increased automation and technological advances may lead to conservational utopia, or the decline of the ecological environment and subsequent synthesis of nature.
