Abquexa - The Strange Delight

A 5G operetta translating text to music and music to vocals through generative AI. A server situation where the borders between the intimate sphere of kinship and cyber surveillance collide. A work lacking the element of dance that instead choreographs the life of the mind through audible algorithms. In collaboration with ChatGPT, DeepAI and Audimee. 

The piece was commissioned by The Lake Radio as part of our Works for Radio 2024 with support from Koda's Cultural Funds and was selected by an international jury consisting of representatives from Seydisfjordur Community Radio (IS) and Retreat Radio (SE).

We’ve asked the Swedish artist Aske Thiberg to contribute some of the sounds from his practice to our archive at The Lake Radio. And graciously he has provided us with a wonderful mix of music from dance performances, videos and readings of three of his short stories. 
Askes work  is digging into themes of loneliness and alienation, anxiety and melancholy, rhythm and weight, in a sometimes playful, sometimes serious manner.

We are excited offer a new context for these truly special songs and texts.

‘King of the Idiots’ is a brilliantly-engineered electro-pop instrumental with a dark edge, minor chords played on analogue synths wend their way over a thumping programmed beat that says ‘1984’. It builds and swerves and builds some more until it’s ascended to the position of towering space-age electro-rock.

‘King of The Idiots’ dips into Kinnis’ soundtrack phase, with glitchy undercurrents peeking through smooth, romantic melodies that could just as easily have surfaced on a Francis Lai or Ennio Morricone soundtrack.
