Third Space has firmly cemented himself back into that head-snapping drum ‘n bass percussion he initially poked his head through. While his recent jaunt for Longform Editions reached into smeared and smudged time portals, stretching time into its most razor-thin edge, this release brings these two worlds together in harmony. Although, those abstract whirlpools have reappeared, through noise and blown out static-as-percussion akin to Emptyset, Ikeda etc. etc.

Throughout dot points, there is an acute awareness around how much solid ground to allow an audience. An instinctive ear for rhythm and texture pushes composition to its limits but keeps more recognisable elements an arm’s length away, keeping immersion consistent, constant – an idea that’s been in Third Space’s work from the start. The tracks are daringly short but remain fully fledged songs, rich with layer and consideration, percussion building as lyrical prose, unwinding stanza by stanza.

While definitely drifting back into the realm of dance music, this is not Third Space leaving drone and tonal shifts behind him. This is merely dipping his toes back into the water of the world he first started in, ready to contribute something new after coming up for air.

Absorb is proud to present ‘Thought Makes Music’, the highly anticipated long-player by gi, solo moniker of unbridled musician, performer, and lyricist Gigi De Lacy (Optic Nerve).

'Thought Makes Music' is gi’s farthest-reaching work, a conclusive vision that follows a succession of revered sketches and short-form releases on labels such as Altered States Tapes (AUS) and Beyond the Bridge (ROK). So far her work sits on the outer limits of what can be considered “dance music”, and at full-length, its singular and immersive quality is glaring. Here, gi’s familiar spacious sound design and metallic IDM percussion is refined by an intertidal palette and restrained songwriting parameters. Given a larger canvas, gi works with increasingly blurred, distorted and feedbacking sounds, enclosed by asynchronous rhythms, bent and then snapped back into grid; the album reveals its musicality in moments of overlap, where everything happens at once.

Across eight tracks, listeners find electronic music that is less concerned with narrative so much as with landscape. gi habitually uses a set of recurring samples, melodies and drums to create the murky atmosphere that permeates the record. Instances of repetition, like a re-used drum break across 'laces', 'coil' & 'rapture' reveal a practice that is constantly rearranging itself via generative drum programming and resampled modulation. This impulse for repetition snowballs into a prominent exploration into feedback on this release. From the warping harmonies on 'feedback'; screeching textures on 'rapture'; and the metronomic jolts of frequency on 'morning' and 'knots', we hear gi’s fascination with “failed” methods of capture, nodding to her history with DIY, punk and hardcore scenes in so-called Australia. Exploring “blown out” re-recorded musical qualities for the first time under the gi alias, we find overtures of amplified noise bleed into otherwise crisp arrangements.

Allowing discreet reference-points to blur, new tonal profiles and distorted intensities arise for gi. 'Thought Makes Music' draws connections with the world around it, following rolling moments of feeling. gi presents her debut confidently, but the sound remains curious, playful & protective of itself; it answers no questions.

Absorb is thrilled to announce the first full-length vinyl LP from Melbourne-based artist, r hunter.

What does it mean to be a formalist today? In the past someone might say something like: “I love form, OK...! The moving, emancipatory promise of Numbers—have you heard of it?” “I structure things in a way that expresses my desire to defer musical decision to a place beyond my own expressive intellect.” And then a sound might play sounding like nothing that has come before it, alien to an ear’s comprehension. But rather than the sense that ‘form’ (as if it were something pure) liberates expression at the expense of romantic authorship, the project of r hunter’s Yield says, I think, something different about the edifice of limits.

What if computational music, for all its careful force, carries the revelation and the burden of the failure of rules to function as a representative language? “I make rules OK…, parameters, and these rules become my musical language, do they not?” Or is it that a bunch of organised sounds one after another are both constitutive of and in excess of the rhythm they might imply? Imagine some made up words and speak them out loud with your own voice: some kind of notation could symbolise the imagined rhythm of this utterance but it will always be an encumbrance to the quality of the syllables themselves. In this way, structure exposes the failure of any novel musical syntax to represent the idea that inspired its coding. I wonder what r hunter was imagining here before opening up software? Let me speculate: little tiny tick tock thing that becomes faster and then slower; shushing motorised shusher of a thing gone wrong; portentous static in the shape of a thing to come, or, perhaps, in the shape of a thing past; beautiful knock-knock sound of a thing you know tapping away at your front door.

There’s a complimentary expression said about industrious workers: ‘you’re a machine man’? But what does it mean to be a person who is called a machine, or to make music on a machine in deference to and yet in opposition to all that is mechanical? Yield made me wonder about that. It’s exceptionally composed and rigorous and carries with it a sense of exploration, surprise and elegance. At one point too, two-thirds through, the music is particularly poignant when we hear how earnest it is. Failing, in a very good way, to imitate formalists of the past, or Kübler-Ross, r hunter calls a track ‘grief sequence’, initiating grief sequence now—ok then, don’t mind if I do initiate grief. I’ll also initiate dance, and I’ll initiate the appreciation of ‘beats’; let me also sequence the congratulations needed for an album that opens new aesthetic avenues for not just computer music, but music in general.

Absorb presents the debut EP by 'dummy tree', the interlocked, ambient strong of Melbourne's Jim Sellars (Yunzero), Jordan Obarzanek (Body Clock, OBA, Cloud Ice 9), and Joseph Buchan (Other Joe).

Three improvisational live cuts form the super-group’s first release, all pinched from their dovetailed performance at the ABSORBED festival in 2024. It was 4:30pm, they were backlit by the afternoon sun. Through these longform recordings, each member of dummy tree can be heard intimately, testing dynamics in turn and introducing surprising amounts of drama. There are guitars, both acoustic and electric, competing with synthesisers and woodwind instruments that build from a murmur into whole walls of sound. The drowsy atmospherics are akin to early Seefeel or Windy & Carl, although careful listeners will also pick up crumbs that trace back to the extensive catalogue of works made by Sellars, Obarzanek and Buchan individually.

You'll find the music of dummy tree to be more disarming than any of the aforementioned, a special project that is worth celebrating in its infancy, and to watch out for while it grows.

 Kavil is an artist, DJ and founder of Melbourne-based record label, Absorb. With an ear for fickle textures and unwonted forms, Kavil compiles moving soundscapes designed to stretch the boundaries of electro-acoustic music.

As a curator, Kavil is known for his work on his label's 30-hour experimental festival, ABSORBED and  bimestrial program on LYL Radio. He is also responsible for the collation of the revered Bleus mix series and the co-curator of Make It Up Club, an institution that has presented weekly avant-garde and improvised sound performances in Naarm since 1998.

The next offering on the mix series is here, courtesy of enigmatic producer, Ismail Hosny aka 3Phaz. 

I first caught wind of Hosny's output via the @3phaz alias - one of his several projects at the helm of the thriving experimental electronic scene in Cairo (think @zulimusic, @1127music, @rami-abadir, @assyouti and so on). Their music is often grouped as one in press, but Hosny's buzzing sound design and trap influence is singular, and hard to forget. I asked Rami Abadir (ABADIR) for his thoughts - who played a show with the label in 2022 - knowing he and Hosny had made music together. ABADIR shared:

"Ismail is a good friend, right! It's true that he's more into music than his identity or image. I'd say he's the most serious and dedicated producer from the electronic scene in Cairo (next to ZULI ofc), very well organised and great at planning. His music taste is wide, although he's focusing more on 3Phaz, which I think is for more strategic reasons (since people are more crazy about club music than the non clubby stuff). Definitely his previous collaboration (under ISMAEL) with MSYLMA  gives a good idea how wide his sound spectrum is, his non 3Phaz stuff also shows that he's great as a sound designer. He has also co-produced the next album of Nadah El Shazly which also shows how good he is as a musician"

The new @nadah-el-shazly album releases June 6th, keep an eye for it, & here is an hour of confounding bass workouts to tide you over.

MC Yallah / @user-724951916 on Hibotep: A walking, breathing example of the diversity of Kampala's arts and cultural scene, Hibo Elmi is, amongst other things, a filmmaker, fashion designer and installation artist. A self-described cultural nomad, her one rule is that rules are there for breaking. A philosophy that extends to her DJ sets where trap, hip hop, house are combined with taraab, gnawa and other Arabic influences to collide into a vibrant contemporary sonic collage.

Ashley Woodward on Hibotep: I’ve been lucky enough to see Hibotep play rooftops, festivals, bars, clubs, backyards - and it’s always a sonic adventure. One night in Kampala before a gig, I was hanging at Hibo’s whilst she prepared for the upcoming set. You could hear the excitement building from within as Hibo filled her bag with a collection of music ‘totally new and different’ to what she had performed recently. I could probably have been forgiven for wondering why there was a need for change when those recent gigs had gone so well, but that’s not Hibo’s style. A passion for underground artists, a champion of sounds from diverse communities, a commitment to freedom of self expression and to challenge oneself creatively is what I would consider authentically Hibotep. And so it was - another amazing journey of moods, music and rhythms had the club swinging, and for myself a reminder from Hibo to keep an open mind, keep searching and keep listening.

Silky Jazz (the name is a nod to his fave tenor, Pharoah Sanders) is a filmmaker + Melbourne’s MOST ear-bending dj + GREATEST music finder, some formative music memories of mine are hearing Antuong play in support of HTRK, his thoughtful afternoon set at ABSORBED this year & his collab mix with Bextaism for Bleus, which I’ve listened to a hundred times since early 2023
 
Silky Jazz, about the mix:

“Naturally as a filmmaker, I am drawn to storytelling and approach music mixes with a similar mindset.  With this particular one, the starting point was on sonic texture – rather than traditional melody – as a way to form a narrative.  A big inspiration was Toru Tanemitsu’s musique-concrete soundtrack to Kwaidan, a Japanese folk-horror film from 1965. While his score builds an atmosphere of dread, the sound on this mix is more akin to something trancey and ASMR-ish – at least to my ears”

“I was introduced to David & his borderless playing via MIUC some years ago, and find him to be completely energising, both on & off the stage. Our set from NS was captured via zoom recorder, placed 1 or 2 metres in front of David on a chair (you will hear it). 1 hour of improvised skronk on turntable, CDJs, laptop, saxophone, clarinet, trash and toys” - Kavil
