To celebrate 20k followers on SoundCloud, I'm putting out this bubblegum pop version of Blushy ahead of the rest of the EP tomorrow.

I made this beat a few years ago when PC Music was starting to get really popular and at one point tried to pitch it to them... In fact, in Shawn Wasabi's "Marble Soda," this beat was sampled and credited as "ABSRDST - Brights" after I played it for him in an Uber in San Francisco. I was happy to find out that the Blushy vocal fit pretty well over it so I decided to finish it up and release it as my own official remix.

I hope you guys enjoy Blushy (Ringtone Version)... I've wanted to put this track out for a long long time so I'm pretty stoked to finally share it with yall :v

I’ve known Ricco Harver since back in the day when I wrote gay fanfiction for Cartoon Network shows. Including him in this comp felt great because this release was really meant to recapture the innocent side of gay romance that I always wanted to show in my writing back then.

Ricco Harver’s rendition of Blushy is absolutely gnarly. Creative sound design, razor-sharp vocal chops, heartrending leads and heavy drops make this one read like an undiscovered Skrillex tune. I think alot of people remember Skrillex for his drops, but I remember him for his tearjerker melodies, and I think Ricco has a similar talent in that regard. That’s about the highest complement I can give to a producer.

Colin’s been a friend of mine since college, and he’s been a supporter for years. He helped me book my first gigs and taught me how to use CDJs… he also invited me to his wedding earlier this year.

Colin’s a really underrated producer in my opinion and I really liked his sweet, radio-friendly house take on the song. This remix feels like a quiet breeze coming off the ocean or something. Very fresh, clean and tasteful.

Hop Box is my friend and has been for a while, and I thought that his version of the song captured a quiet sadness that I didn’t tap into with the original. This song is so much about the passing of seasons and letting people go, and the rapidly changing instruments he used in the drop reminded me of the times changing or different scenes in a movie….

It sounds like it was built for a sad anime AMV and the chords were so melancholy and bittersweet... I actually think he captured the meaning of the song better than I did, so I wanted to make sure as many people heard it as possible.

Imaginary Friend might be the solo debut of Jack 'ABSRDST' Vanoudenaren on Brave Wave, but it's far from his first release. The music trajectory of our Brooklyn-based producer is fascinating to follow, as he went from releasing his first solo album on Bandcamp and finessing video game remixes on our label and elsewhere (as heard on World 1-2 & World 1-2: Encore), to releasing experimental albums on other online imprints and even working side by side with chiptune-extraordinaire Anamanaguchi and Brave Wave's legendary Mega Man composer Manami Matsumae. 

This shapeshifting in music styles is a testament to Jack's incredible versatility and his unwillingness to choose a certain genre, but Imaginary Friend's pop-infused sounds are more than just a new typecast for him. On this new album, Jack shares the most personal and vulnerable stories, with lyrics explored and written by himself, and an inviting lush production that begs you to pay attention to its many layers. "I really do consider this my debut album," Jack tells us. "Everything before, I was just trying to figure out who I am. What started as a meditation on grief grew into a voice that makes me feel strong. I hope it makes you feel that way too." 

Imaginary Friend includes singles that have been previously released, but are remastered for this release by Brave Wave's awards-winning Swiss engineer Dan Suter.
