Sampling and re-sampling orchestral ensembles and old guitar recordings, processed into an ambient drone, Hakagawa is the 4th single from the "unfolding" Odyssey album. It's an album journey. I like the idea of creating an album as a process, as a journey. Granted, every album is a process. But, the intentionality here of releasing songs as I finish them, along with a new layer of the artwork - this is a new concept for me - something that could bring a fresh creative perspective on my music.

I liked the idea of creating an album as a process, as a journey - not simply as one moment, but an expedition of moments. Granted, every album is a process. But, Odyssey was intentionally that - one song at a time, and with each song release, a new layer of the album art releasing with it. That way, there is a visual progression alongside the auditory progression.

This album is a bit more dusty, a bit more analog, and a bit more experimental than past of mine. Although, I think, the warm, positive, and otherworldly mood is very much still here.

Anthem Falls welcomes ambient electronica artist Abstract Aprils to its roster, with the upcoming release of the EP Moedi. With comparisons to Brian Eno, Robert Fripp and Hammock, the deep ambient blogosphere has described past work as “tranquil,” “rich in organic sounds,” and a “masterpiece of ambient music.”

Inspired by the vast skies and landscape of western Montana, past releases have explored a marriage between ethereal organic layers and experimental electronic sounds.

Moedi, however, marks the start of a new chapter.

A strict limitation was placed on the writing of these songs - everything you hear is entirely made from synthesizers. No microphones, no field recordings, no organics - only electronics - only oscillators and the manipulation of their audio signals. In fact, the word moedi actually translates to “limitations.” 

Ironically, boundaries can open the door to freedoms. The challenge of making the songs interesting under these limitations led to unexpected and unique outcomes. Finding depth may have been more difficult than usual at times, but, with a nod to author Ryan Holiday, sometimes the obstacle is the way.

Experimenting with analog synths such as the Prophet Rev2 and Moog Mother-32, along with vintage synth emulators via the esteemed Arturia Collection series, the journey to this depth comes in the form of imaginative and unexpected layers - be it finding the right plucking sound through synth envelope experimentation and then reversing the recording to create sparkly atmosphere (“Verge”); or, taking a small clip of a few recorded notes and processing it through a granular synth for a 12-minute improvisation, and finally cutting and chopping that ensuing recording up even further (“Bourne”) - to name just a few of the experiments.

And, using only electronic elements, lest the result end up feeling too far apart from a human touch, there were intentional decisions to give the songs life. For example, there’s a steady sub bass line that drives “Reserve,” but rather than playing to a grid, perfectly on tempo, this, along with nearly every other part of the album, was played without a click or rhythmic pulse - but rather, entirely with human feel.

Indeed, even the song titles were limited to one word.

Moedi is a new chapter for Abstract Aprils - one that was not held back by limitations, but rather given its pulse by them. The result is a rich, unique, and enduring ambient offering.

Once the dust settles, and you have this album, this large piece of your creative heart.. you look back and listen and you wonder, “where did that song even come from?” Or, “how did these three songs mold together like that?” There’s just certain albums, certain creative eras, that are out of your own mind, and you were outside of yourself when writing them.

Hope Lives In Doubt is one of those albums.

The depth, the ambience, the emotion, the textures - there’s a chance here in bringing the listener outside of themselves - to someplace new, yet someplace warmly familiar.

I’m working on a new album, but I’m taking a new approach this time around. I’m planning on releasing it as it develops, rather than waiting until it’s finished. More than that, I’ve developed the album art, and am going to release a new layer of that art with each new single. So far I’ve only finished this one song, and subsequently will release it with this first layer of the album art.
