Stonxcast EP:048 - Hosted by Ollie

The story begins in 1986, somewhere along the backroads of Arizona, though witnesses place her everywhere, Louisiana, Nevada, even rural Oregon. The woman they called Addison Vale never stayed long. Motel clerks described her as polite but distracted, always wearing sunglasses even at night. One noted that when she removed them to sign her name, her eyes weren’t red or brown, they were colorless, reflecting light like glass.

Addison had no recollection of who she was before the early ’80s. Every few years, she woke up in a new place with the same recurring dream: a cabin by a lake, bodies drained and pale, and a note scrawled in her own handwriting “Midnight is home.”

That phrase would later surface as a lyric in “Chase the Night.”

Throughout the late ’80s and early ’90s, unexplained killings followed her path, victims found bloodless, but without wounds. Police reports often mentioned an unexplained cold in the air, even during the height of summer. Locals said she was cursed, a remnant of an older bloodline tied to a 19th-century ritual, one that attempted to cheat death by binding the soul to the dark hours between dusk and dawn.

She couldn’t die. She couldn’t rest. Every sunrise erased her memories, but every sunset brought the truth flooding back, that she’d been turned, and every life she touched ended in silence.

By 2001, Addison was living under a new name in Seattle, performing in underground clubs under the alias M.A.V. (a reference to her initials, though she never confirmed it). Her shows were strange, dimly lit, drenched in crimson light, and always ending abruptly before dawn. Fans described her performances as “possessed” her voice trembling like static, her eyes almost glowing in the dark.

The song “Chase the Night” was recorded sometime during that period. According to studio notes recovered years later, she insisted on recording live, with no retakes. The engineers claimed the equipment picked up a second voice underneath hers, not harmony, not echo, but something older, deeper, like a chorus from a cave.

The name comes from her condition. Addison could never see the sunrise without pain, and so she learned to chase the night, moving from place to place before dawn caught her. The song reflects that restless existence, the pulse of a predator who doesn’t want to hunt, only to outrun what she’s become.

In 2020, a cassette labeled “CTN 86” surfaced at an estate sale in Tucson. On the tape’s B-side was a short message whispered in Addison’s voice:

> “If I stop running, it finds me. Don’t let it find you.”
