This month welcomes Greg Damiani as the special guest for Bright Patterns. Greg has been a dear friend for many years, and we often see eye to eye about many things. Music is no exception, and it’s no surprise I’ve been a fan of his selections since the first time I heard him play. “Music, creativity, and embodying the moment has become an integral part of my journey through healing these past two years,” he said to me. “Life, love, wellness, forgiveness. It's all tied up in making things for myself and for other people now. Being present, open, to this experience, day, life, and breath. I survived a plane crash, was raised by jackals, and continue to be born again.” In many ways, that alone captures so much of what this show is all about. We hope you enjoy the music that we find to express it.

Any of you synth freaks out there will know all about London Modular Alliance. It is the alias of a live electronic act made up of Koova, Yes Effect and Pip Williams, but is also a much loved and cult synth shop of the same name in Hackney, London. In the club, London Modular Alliance do things properly: they cook up brain frying soundtracks, on the fly, with modular synths, no laptops, and many patch cables. Exactly what will go down at any of their shows is unknown even by the men behind the machines, such is their nature, but suffice it to say they always impress. Their studio sounds are equally beguiling and have come on Brokntoys and Hypercolour, and now they make their unique entry into our mix series.  

Clocking in at just over an hour, it is a one of the most alive soundtracks we have heard: the whole thing unfolds and evolves seemingly with a life of its own. There are no joins between tracks, no jarring transitions, just a fluid fusion of electro and techno grooves coated in that raw analogue texture we all love so much. Variously prickly and kinetic, raw and freaky or more supple and seductive, it is a splendid session from some of the finest synth maestros out there.

Dekmantel Podcast 124 - London Modular Alliance

This Friday’s mix celebrates some of the earlier work of Cleveland techno legend Dan Curtin. Herein you shall find a glorious selection of melodic, acidic electronica and tech house, rich with his complex, layered sound. I discovered Dan’s 1994 masterpiece The Silicon Dawn in the late 90s, and although I loved it dearly from the off, never really dug into his wonderfully diverse back catalogue to the extent that his talent warrants. Well, that’s all changed now :)

The tracklist on this mix is shorter than usual and with good reason. These tunes really deserve a chance to breathe, jam-packed as they are with ideas - you get three tracks’ worth of melodies, acidic riffs and bleeps in one. In a few cases it was hard to cut a tune even after 5 minutes, knowing yet another earworm was just around the corner. 

I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I did compiling and making it - if you do, and weren’t overly familiar with Dan Curtin before, I strongly recommend picking up The Silicon Dawn for starters, it’s an absolute classic.
