After the announcement of the dynamic duo’s decision to focus on individual projects, Fred V and Grafix present their first solo releases in almost a decade. Renowned for synth-driven symphonies and soothing songwriting, Fred V brings a high dose of octane electronica in the down tempo fix, ‘Burning Me’. Grafix has taken a fresh direction with ‘Frozen’ travelling down the rough and rugged techy route, ready to shatter dancefloors worldwide. The album is packed with 32 brand new original tracks, collaborations and remixes to make sure that good vibes and even better music are in plentiful supply, featuring the likes of Camo & Krooked, Flava D, London Elektricity, S.P.Y, Kings Of The Rollers, Degs, Logistics and Makoto, seamlessly blended together by Nu:Tone on the continuous mix.

Delivering everything you’d expect plus more, Urbandawn’s ‘Carnival Blues’ is a nod to his eclectic musical background.The Sao Paulo-based sonic architect canvasses vibrations from around the world into an untestable drum & bass cruncher. Villem sets the compilation in motion with ‘We Had A Song’ ft Leo Wood, a 2020 cover of a classic by the progressive contemporary icons The Roots - “You Got Me”. Villem infuses drum & bass with neo soul and hip hop to create a sublime liquid bouncer drenched in moreish guitar riffs and comforting strings.

His first release since his seventh studio album, Hospital head-honcho London Elektricity has teamed up again with the Stockholm-based Bulgarian Goddess, providing stunning orchestral sounds in ‘Someone Once Gave Me A Melody’. Camo & Krooked meet Pola & Bryson on their official remix of ‘Turn Up (The Music)’. Incorporating the anthemic synth and vocal leads from the original, brisk breaks and growling basses flip the tune on its head turning it into a sub-heavy summer striker.

Embarking on an interplanetary journey through bass-ridden black holes, powerhouse trio Kings Of The Rollers have stepped up with ‘Saturn’s Strings’, plus ‘The Prophet’ which marks Voltage’s first solo release on Hospital Records. Taken from his highly anticipated third album ‘Ex-Machina’, on Hospital Records, Metrik has teamed up with Australian bass music titan ShockOne on ‘Dying Light’ which sees euphoric vocal hooks sung by Metrik himself complete with an electrifying bassline, destined to deliver energising vibrations worldwide. 

Incorporating new levels of power to the mix, Texas based dancefloor D+B icon Flite has worked up a supreme ripper of a remix. With releases on UKF, Pilot, Viper, and Liquicity, Flite is no stranger to cooking up untestable bangers, evidenced by his new-wave liquid anthems such as ‘Joy’ and ‘Decisions’. 

Gliding basslines ripple beneath Metrik’s enrapturing vocals, accompanied by weighty drums and uplifting arpeggios. Distorted plucks champion the instantly recognisable melody, whilst distinctive pad swells throughout the breakdown breathe a new lease of life into the track.

Vocal veterans DRS & Dynamite present ‘Playing In The Dark’, the debut LP from their collaborative project released on Hospital Records. These two pivotal figures, who have stood at the forefront of drum & bass for over two decades, have now teamed up with an array of globally respected producers including Calibre, Roni Size, Nu:Tone, S.P.Y, DJ Zinc, Chimpo and DJ Marky, to create an uncharted 16-track LP. Following on from the success of the pair’s first single ‘Fix It All (feat. London Elektricity)’, sit back and get ready to embark on the lyrical journey of a lifetime.

Getting straight to work, ‘Back & Forth’ sees the flows of DRS & Dynamite effortlessly bounce off each other over a relentless S.P.Y instrumental. Cold bars and a fierce bassline set the track up to be timeless, that will ignite sound systems worldwide. Following suit, rave legend DJ Zinc lends his vast depths of experience for ‘Get Down’, a high energy roller with bouncing vocal hooks, energising drums and that signature catchy low-end that Zinc’s become so famed for.

Affirming his status as a true mic champion, DRS demonstrates an ability to complement his heavy hitting flows with dynamic vocal melodies in title track ‘Playing In The Dark (feat. The Vanguard Project)’, coupled with Dynamite’s sharp and meaningful lyrics, they explore the importance and inequality surrounding MC and lyricist culture within D+B. Reminiscent of their love for pirate radio, ‘Highrise FM’ sees DRS & Dynamite reflect on memories of spreading music and good vibes which still shines brightly to this day. The track is produced by none other than the liquid-funk, ambient and downtempo pioneer Calibre. Leading figure of the jungle and drum & bass movement Roni Size also steps up for ‘Not The Fakes Ones’. This remarkable link up of three legends within the scene culminates in a truly up front and in your face record, exactly what we’ve come to expect from the Reprazent pioneer.

DRS first came across Dynamite during his time in Roni Size’s Bristol collective Reprazent, the winners of the 1997 Mercury Prize ‘Album Of The Year’, now showing full circle movements in 2020. ‘Playing In The Dark’ pays respect to this collaboration and the combination of styles which is signalled so clearly throughout DRS and Dynamite’s sound. As Dynamite explains that “the producers [brought] their pallets” for himself and DRS “to paint on”, the duo were able to convey their message, history and wisdom in one of the most boundary pushing projects that drum & bass has seen.
