Following a prosperous career in music and poetry, Detroit-based musician and performer Malik Alston readies his vibrant album ‘Malik Alston Presents Painted Pictures: Air’ set for release via The Jazz Diaries. The album is a spirited celebration between jazz virtuosity and Motor City house music, showcasing Alston’s roots in Jazz, Gospel, Soul and Dance Music. 

Alston’s story is one that is intrinsically aligned with the story of Detroit itself. Having hosted one of the first Slum Village concerts, and teaching vocal lessons to many members of the Detroit music community. His production and writing collaborations read like a who’s who of Detroit artists including Alton Miller, Amp Fiddler, Roy Davis Jr. & Javonntte and releases on Moodymann’s Mahogani Music to name a few.

“‘When I think of ‘Air’... for me, it exists to express a combination of freedom, self awareness, and doing something different and new. In ‘Air’ you get to really hear the band as a whole, no one stands out individually. It was all a matter of showing that we brought the music to life together as a unit. ‘Air’ is definitely a true reflection of what Painted Pictures was: free musicians who play good music.”

Her name Yo refers to MTV YO Raps and shows which sound has influenced her. Already in her childhood she was influenced by the 90's Golden Era of Rap, Jazz, Soul and House through the musical taste of her parents. This sound is reflected in her DJ sets, which she recreates with future beats and edits. Since 2018 @jenni-yo has been DJing with Miss Control as DJ duo InFEMous and is a member of the female DJ crew GG Vybe from Frankfurt, because “HipHop has always been for the ladies!”

Selectors Assemble bring you this exclusive premiere of "Arboles" taken from the soon to drop self-titled album of the Afro Brunk Band!

Born out of the favelas and samba schools of São Paulo, the Afro Bruk Band Project is a collaboration of singers, poets, musicians, friends and family. Their sound is inspired by Bossa-Nova, Afrobeat, Brasilian / Cuban Yoruba culture and the Broken Beat sound from the UK.

The brainchild of the project is Swiss-based Ruben Estevez, producer and DJ of Bruk Boogie Kru sound system. His aim was to create a live project, to promote musicians, to diffuse their passion out of Brasil and to export Brasilian musical street culture.
