Matthew Herbert shares the latest single Hypnotised to be taken from the new Herbert album “Musca” featuring vocalist Mel Uye-Parker, set for release 22nd October on Accidental Records. This follows earlier sounds from the album, Fantasy featuring Verushka and The Way featuring Y’akoto.

Badly Dressed Boy - Matthew Herbert Remixes Tribute Mix

10 years since the consumerist musings of Tesco, Matthew Herbert reanimates his Wishmountain project and heads deep underground to find the source material for Stonework: 1000 metres down.

Like many of Herbert’s projects, Wishmountain releases revolve around specific, material sound palettes, and for this latest album he’s drawn from a sample library created as a commission for the Stone Techno festival, which took place at the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein mine in Essen, Germany. Working with sound recordist Lorenzo Dal Ri, Herbert and Dan Pollard captured a varied and wide variety of hits, tones, textures and one-shots from the frozen-in-time remnants of the Ruhr region’s coal-mining industry and from specific materials in the nearby Ruhr Museum and Mineralien-Museum. A sample library created by Matthew and Dan of the recordings was also used for the Stone Techno series, from which tracks have been commissioned by the likes of Luke Slater, Megan Leber, Ben Sims and KiNK drawing from the same sounds heard on this album.

These stone-cast sounds lend themselves to the Wishmountain framework – skeletal, quasi-industrial techno with an angular impulse and a subtle swing. Much like the breakthrough hit, 1996’s ‘Radio’ (made using samples of a broken radio), the limitations on the source material sharpen the focus of the music. What started out as a practical hardware restriction in the early 90s became a purposeful way of working for Herbert – one which carried through the 1999 album Wishmountainisdead to 2012’s Tesco with its sampling of the British supermarket chain’s 10 most popular products.

Musically, Stonework is consistent terrain for Wishmountain – austere and forbidding in one sense, playful and irreverent in another. But from a club music perspective, which Wishmountain absolutely is, it offers DJs a variety of rhythmic formations within the tool-like minimalism of the arrangements, opening up intriguing possibilities for mixing into, out of, or somewhere in between. For every 4/4 thrust and jerk there is a fractured, snaking meditation pivoting around other time signatures.

Crystal clear in its creative intention and simultaneously successful as surface-level club music, Stonework: 1000 Metres Down is a natural continuation for one of Herbert’s most celebrated, albeit intermittent, aliases.

For those who know, Bambooman is one of the most sought after, probing, and distinctive voices in UK electronic music right now.
 
The Yorkshire born producer’s catalogue builds into an aural mosaic, comprising everything from scrunched up hip-hop to techno deviance, all delivered with an impish sense of individuality.
 
Yet now, after six meandering but inspired EPs, Bambooman is ready to break with all this and drop his debut album ‘Whispers’. “I choose to release an album at this point as I felt I was finally confident enough with my sound and techniques to make the album I wanted to make,” he says. “I was careful to make it as honest and original as possible, whilst at the same time paying homage to the music and artists who have most inspired me.”
 
“It’s more honest than my previous work,” he insists, “and it resonates with me more.”
 
‘Whispers’ certainly resonates. It’s a lengthy, bucolic work, an album of great breadth but also one of sustained mood – think those hazy summer evenings when shadows stretch out across the road, and autumn lingers around the corner.
 
In contrast to last year’s ‘Feel’ EP – his first on new home Accidental Recordings – this new album has a dusty, organic, and decidedly personal feel, much more at home with Jon Hassel’s ‘fourth world’ aesthetic than the club.
 
“I used lots of music concrete and electro-acoustic style processing techniques on the recordings across the album, which helped to give the sounds a more other-worldly aesthetic.”
 
“I tried to demonstrate the more personal techniques and processes I have developed over the years within the tracks, to give them more character and originality.”
 
The results are also imbued with an incredible sense of mystery, with Bambooman’s productions frequently being shot through with a hallucinatory sense of the uncanny. Entirely self-composed, ‘Whispers’ utilises “lots of field recordings that I’ve collected over the last few years, while within the tracks you can find lots of the instruments, percussion, bells and whistles that have been gathered throughout my life.”
 
In certain ways ‘Whispers’ is entirely autobiographical: Bambooman reaches back to his varied alter egos, to the ambient releases, art commissions, and soundtrack projects that litter his discography. The cover art was even pieced together by Oliver Pitt – of Glasgow group Golden Teacher – who was an early ally in the producer’s sonic quest.
 
Stylistically ‘Whispers’ veers from avant hip-hop of Flying Lotus to the theoried composition of Terry Riley, from the future-forward percussive energy of Battles to the ever-evolving electronics of Mark Pritchard. It’s a record marks by a fiercely independent spirit, but also by a close-knit cast of collaborators.
 
King Kashmere takes a starring turn, following the pair’s collision on the recent ‘SUPERGOD’ EP. “To me he was and still is the most talented and forward thinking MC in the UK, and has proven this time and time again,” explains Bambooman. “He’s a true wordsmith and has the great voice and clarity to match.”
 
Segilola is becoming a permanent fixture in the producer’s work, and her voice helps push him down fresh avenues. “It didn't make sense to make a debut album without her powerful and beautiful voice making an appearance on it,” he admits.
 
Each vocal is recorded, chopped up and then spliced across the album, with Elsa Hewitt also making a number of appearances and re-appearances. “It’s been really interesting working with her vocals,” he enthuses. “I sometimes think she sounds quite 90s on my tracks – but in a good way, if that makes any sense!”
 
A wonderfully picturesque, intensely visual experience, ‘Whispers’ is set to be followed by a number of live shows. Bambooman will launch the LP at East London’s creative hot-house Total Refreshment Centre on August 10th, before flying out to Montreal for the ever-vital MUTEK Festival.
 
The ‘Whispers’ album was partly funded by PRS Foundation.

Berlin based Arttu has been dropping his dusty fat beats across numerous techno labels including Philpot, Clone and 4Lux for a few years but it was 2016’s track ‘Hoodies’ on Arttu’s own imprint Cyblo that caught the attention of Accidental label boss Matthew Herbert (and which remains firmly in Herbert’s record bag). Arttu was invited onto the Accidental Jnr roster and has delivered a chunk of techno with so much swing it made Donkey Kong blush.

Arttu takes the most simple of jazz bass hooks and loops across a rigid kick, it’s when those hats kick in that the groove goes fucking wild. The presence of US native Roberto Q Ingram on vocals brings a full Detroit gangster flavour to the party. Initially Arttu and Roberto had an idea to record a simple and sweaty track with Roberto on the mic and Arttu at the control of some dusty old machines. The result, ‘Bass Trakk’ is exactly that: Roberto dropping lyrics over a raw beat and a massive bassline. The EP is rounded off with a deep bit of techno ‘Debris’ with all the trappings of the darkest hour of a Berlin winter in which it was recorded.

The Drip EP brings together four distinctive producers and one set of sounds - The Drips. The result is a compilation of 4 tracks that bring the swing and sampling of some of Accidental Jnr’s finest to produce a soaking wet dancefloor.

First up is label boss Matthew Herbert with a trademark groove that harks back to his Wishmountain moniker albeit found lurking in the swamp. Cosmo Sheldrake takes a slight departure from his usual multi-instrumentaling live-looping avant-folk to deliver a track that could only be described as travelling circus aqua-techno. Bahraini born, French / US bred and now Edinburgh dwelling video game builder, sound designer and sometime Scottish league football referee Yann Seznec opens the B-side with an absolute stormer of a rain drenched club hook. Sussex based producer Crewdson and builder of such electronic instruments as the Eggiophone and Concertronica closes proceedings with a drizzling evolving 2-step number.

Accidental Records is set to release a new ep from Dave Aju on 12" and digital download. The San Francisco based producer who has released multiple EPs and albums on cult dance label Circus Company and has remixed some of the most sought after tracks such as Nicolas Jaar's 'Space Is Only Noise', is about to release his first EP on Matthew Herbert's Accidental Records. 

For over a decade the US west coast innovator has been producing and performing his unique brand of electronic dance music. He seasons the rhythms of house and techno with an array of outside musical influences - notably jazz and p-funk, a low-slung aesthetic clearly rooted in hip-hop, and a sonic approach akin to Music concrete. The result is a fresh and expressive sound that varies from raw and percussive to deep and melodic and is favored by an ever-increasing number of listeners, dancers and DJs around the world.

ACCIDENTAL RE RELEASE WISHMOUNTAIN'S CLASSIC 'RADIO' ON LIMITED 12" - Monday 10th September

After such an overwhelming positive response to Matthew Herbert’s recent return with the Wishmountain project ‘Tesco’, Accidental records have decided to release this limited run 12” featuring some of the highlights of the original project., including the classic ‘Radio’. 

Radio was originally released on seminal 90's techno label Antiphon records and first championed by Djs such as Sven Vath and Westbam as well as being a club classic for legendary clubs like Fuse in Belgium. The track blasted its way in to nightclubs around the world despite being made only from 8 sounds of a beaten up plastic radio. In many ways it made Matthew's name, as someone ready to bring real and challenging sounds to the largely synthetic soundscape of club music while being unafraid to make people dance at the same time.

Herbert House music fans will not be disappointed by this clutch of rare tracks, available for a short time on vinyl.
