D. Shostakovich: Trio No. 1 in C minor
Dmitri Shostakovich wrote the first piano trio in C minor in 1923, during his studies at the Petrograd Conservatory. You could call the movement a rollercoaster of intense youthful feelings and fantasies. At the same time, the 17-year-old already shows an amazing compositional maturity.
While the various moods, passions and timbres change all the time, Shostakovich makes use of the chromatic head-motif almost unnoticedly in the entire piece by constantly changing tempo, articulation and character. As a sharp contrast, the lyrical second theme - at first only played by the cello - is accompanied by a spherical cloud of parallel shifted triads of the piano. In between, snappy pianissimo staccato notes and impressionistic harmonies show the huge variety of the piece. Is it surprising that we, as young people of the "Harry Potter Generation", thought of goblins and wild witch hunts while studying the piece. 
In a brilliant coda, Shostakovich finally presents all the essential motifs again in a new and different light. The piece ends with a triumphant climax, in which the dreamy second theme now appears as a majestic anthem.
