2008 was a turning point. I felt like I was standing on the edge of something bigger than myself, chasing a sound I could finally call my own.

My Sound was exactly that — me drawing a line in the sand and saying: this is accomplice. Built from raw textures, hypnotic grooves, and the stubborn refusal to copy anyone else, it became a declaration of independence in music form.

Lost Dubs 004 - My Sound (2005)

2006 was the year I first went to Movement in Detroit — my favourite festival in my favourite city. At the time, minimal techno was everywhere. I’d never worked at 120 bpm before, and I honestly had no idea what made a “minimal techno” track actually minimal techno.

So I tried. Ten times.

What came out wasn’t minimal techno at all — at least, I don’t think so. But what it is turned out funky, different, and very much my own. Sometimes not fitting the mold is the point.

That’s how Minimal Ten was born.

2008 was my Dubstep era. What I loved about Dubstep (before it became the dirty word of Brostep) was its versatility. Coming from Ragga Jungle, which stood so far apart from most 4/4 genres, Dubstep gave me an access point into so many different spaces. At the lounge, I could play the chilled-out side. At the Reggae club, I could lean into the deep Dub. At the breaks club, I could bring the harder edges. There weren’t any Dubstep-specific venues in Seoul at the time — I might have been the only one playing it in the country — so I shoehorned myself into whatever nights I could.

During that time, I was in a relationship with Anna D — entrepreneur, voice actress, photographer, venue owner, DJ, and resident of We Love Techno at Joker Red, located in Seoul’s artsy Hongdae district. Anna invited me to contribute something unique: techno-inspired dubstep. I called it Dubstepno.

Rhodes Vibe was written specifically for that night, and more specifically for the mix handed out on CD at the door: We Love Dubstepno. It remains one of my favorite tracks I’ve ever produced. Just lovely, through and through.

Lost Dubs 007 - Rhodes Vibe (2008)

By 2007 I’d been living in Seoul for three years, and had already spent a decade playing aggressive, bass-heavy music in dark clubs. Maybe it was time to chill out.

Years earlier, when I was looking to travel, I deliberately sought danger — which is how I ended up on an adventure in Bangkok. But this time, I wanted somewhere calm, somewhere peaceful. Two places kept coming up: India and Tibet.

Maybe India is my imagined sound of a place I’d never been. Chill, melodic, meditative. A pause between the heavier edges of my catalog. I still haven’t been to India, but this track is what I thought it might feel like.

Commissioned by the Simcoe Contemporary Dancers in 2013, Cappuccino was my first time writing music to a dance instead of the other way around. The choreography was already complete, and I was asked to create the soundtrack around it. At first, that felt backwards — until my partner, who has an honours degree in dance, explained that it’s actually common practice.

So I sat with the video they sent me. Watched it over and over — at least a thousand times. From the detuned toy piano to the cellos, both strummed and bowed, every note and sound is mapped directly to the dancers’ movements.

For the record, I’m a coffee drinker, but for the longest time I thought it was called Capuchin, like the monkey. Turns out, it’s Cappuccino. Which honestly makes a lot more sense. Otherwise, those are some pretty chill monkeys.

💿 Lost Dubs 010 – ex per i mental (2008)

This track has been sitting on the shelf for years because it never really fit in anywhere. It has no melody, just rhythm and space. At the time I was deeply inspired by the drum programming of Sixteenarmed Jack and Krinjah — producers I respected not just for their skills, but as colleagues and friends. This was my nod to them.

Originally, this wasn’t even going to be part of my Lost Dubs series. LD010 was supposed to be a remix of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, but unlicensed vocals meant it couldn’t be released. That sent me back to the vaults, and one night after a long session out, I sat with this track again. I heard something in it that I had never noticed before — something I can’t quite explain. Talking about music is like singing about architecture, but it was there.

So here it is. ex per i mental. No melody, no polish, just an exploration of drums, patterns, and negative space.

I’m mostly sharing this here because I think people in this sub will dig it. Would love to hear what you think.
