5am | Acid House / Techno / Tech House / Dub Techno / Minimal Techno / Indie / Pop / Jazz / Hip Hop

Eleven years ago I was playing techno inspired dubstep (ie dubstepno) at the sixth edition of We Love Techno at Joker Red in Seoul, South Korea. This is the mix that was given to the patrons on CD (you remember those, right?).  

This style remains my favourite that finds itself in the shadow of the umbrella term that is dubstep. Some call it post dubstep, but it is style that is so dissimilar to what dubstep has become, that I fear that I’ve polluted your mind by even referencing the term. But history being what it is, written by not by the winners per se, but rather by the most economically proficient, the Skrillexes and the derivatives of that there of held fast to the label. And so let’s just call this techno and be done with it. It is more similar to techno than dubstep anyway.

Ugh, labels are hard. 

It’s music, and I like it.  I liked it in 2008, and I like it now.

The Konkrete Jungle Organization has been pushing the low end essentials out of New York since 1994. Now with branches all of the planet, it is, in short, a global phenomenon. As a resident of Konkrete Jungle Seoul, accomplice represented the dubstep side of things. This mix served as an introduction to many in the city who had not yet had a taste of either the dub or the step.

Some notable moments can be heard in this 75 minute long bass driven trip including Closer To You by Intoccabile (the individual who personally introduced dubstep to accomplice), Your Reality, Your Choice by J-Path (Konkrete Jungle Seoul resident and Korea’s undeniable bass music champion) and Persian Fatness, a collaborative effort between accomplice and J-Path. The man providing the introduction needs no introduction himself, ragga emcee superstar, Million Dan.

Djing/producing since 1997, Toronto-born accomplice is well known genre slut from his early days of holding down residencies with iDJ, and Junglist Fridays at Blue Dog, both in Montreal. Now associated with the Breakbeat Massive, while residing in Seoul, South Korea, accomplice  was regularly featured at one off events in and around Seoul such as Pentaport, a monthly resident at the legendary Vinyl Underground in Busan, and a resident of Konkrete Jungle Seoul at Club Cargo.  Currently located in cottage country, accomplice continues to rock dance floors in unexpected ways.
