Our next installment of the mix series was created by the extraordinary producer, DJ, painter, graphic designer, and the person behind Adhémar and half of Aucuba Replica, Clément Davout. 

We wanted a mix from Clément early on. His works are like instances of mastered calligraphy, emotionally rooted into the intuitive understanding of human cognition. His exquisite sense of style, meticulous production, recognizable sonic palette, and sensitivity to the smallest details make him one of the Delayed all-time favorites. It seems like everything he puts his mind on never disappoints.  

For this mix, Adhemar reworked all the tracks and did special edits to make it unique. Delicate with a flawless flow; opening up, yet introspective. It spotlights all his signature elements and is mesmerizing in a balance of engagement, relaxation, and unwinding. We fell in love with it right away and honestly think it is one of Adhémar’s finest creations. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do!🌱

We are beyond thrilled to have Fade for our next guest mix @symposiumrecords ! I have been following Fade and the Of Paradise label for quite some time. Both have been a big influence on what I play in my sets and curate for Symposium Records.  

This newest mix gives us an ambient, sludgy, downtempo vibe. Perfect to take time to chill a bit in our hectic lives!

For those that don't know -  Fade is a DJ, producer and Of Paradise Co-Founder.  She has been making a name for herself in the electronic music scene with trademark bass-heavy sounds in both her productions and DJ sets. Blending intense rhythms with emotive melodies, her hard-hitting style has marked her out as an artist playing by her own rules. Fade hosts regular radio shows on Movement Radio and dublab,and has previously been on the air with prominent stations Rinse FM, NTS, The Lot Radio, Reprezent and Operator Radio, as well as providing mixes for the likes of Fold, Bubble Bath, Hypnotic Groove and Bicep. Having previously released music on her own imprint, Fade is currently working on her debut EP which is due out later this year, as well as working with artists on forthcoming releases for Of Paradise and sister label Badlands.

"For this mix, I actually did something really special. I’m premiering the remixes from my Subject Detroit compilation, and I’ve also created five new tracks specifically to play in this mix. There are a couple of other tracks from some amazingly talented artists in there as well. The focus is an uptempo, danceable, but super funky techno mix – not sleepy, not slow – just Detroit style. That’s what I love to do. It’s got to be funky, but it has to have that pace and danceability."

"I'm ready to bring back gatekeeping." The New Yorker staff writer discusses how to protect the underground, experimenting with drugs and her new book, Health and Safety.

Can drugs help us find meaning in music and nightlife? This is a question that today's Exchange guest, New Yorker staff writer Emily Witt, asks in earnest in her new book Health and Safety: A Breakdown. Just released in hardcover in the UK and Europe, the memoir traces Witt's life in her early-to-mid 30s. A journalist living and working in Brooklyn, she began experimenting with psychedelics and club drugs after years of living what she describes as a conservative, straight-and-narrow, middle-class life. She became enamoured with the borough's underground raves, frequenting events like the festival Sustain-Release, the party Unter and sets at Bushwick haunt Bossa Nova Civic Club, all while falling in love with an aspiring DJ and producer she calls Andrew.

As the book progresses, Witt documents the growing MAGA movement in America, gun rights rallies and mass shootings. As the country falls apart, she watches her romantic relationship fall apart, too. Drugs and Brooklyn nightlife, she writes, became both an escape and a way to rearrange a world that she starts to feel no longer makes sense. 

Witt shares critical opinions about the underground scene's capacity to be a utopia and place of belonging in an increasingly hostile world, arguing that there should be more gatekeeping in place to protect a scene that's threatened by capitalism and the mainstream. She also interrogates what she calls "woke identity politics" in Brooklyn, the lack of change that came from the Black Lives Matter movement, empty calls for political protest that dominated the early days of the pandemic and why, despite everything, she's chosen to stay in Brooklyn for good. Me and Ben thought it would be fun to play a long DJ set together at Globus, the upstairs floor at Tresor in Berlin. 
We last played together (as Frequency 7) in May 2013. This time we played a ‘back to back’ DJ set, I’m pretty sure playing 2 tracks each for the whole six and a half hour set. All we had in mind beforehand was to start with some Dub and ‘see where it goes’. 

It was a lot of fun so we wanted to share the recording with you.

subspiele: why did you call the mix "Parasolka" ?
komponente: I thought for a long time to record the mix, really wanted to write something sensual and spiritual. 
I hope that I managed to achieve hypnotic groove. 
Parasolka translated as an umbrella. In the title role was played by the rainy weather and an evening walk.

subspiele: where did you record the mix ?
komponente: Mix was recorded at home, spent few weeks on record, 
really wanted made intresting compilation and atmosphere.

subspiele: which is the song that you recently liked the most ?
komponente: To tell the truth all the songs very close to me in spirit, 
so with confidence say that i like all songs 

subspiele: how do you feel now ?
komponente: I feel spring inspiration 

subspiele: how should it go on ?
komponente: I think to continue to record music and soon produce new releases!
